This song is one of my all-time favorites! Below is my interpretation of it: Lyric: In all this desperation I fear there's nothing I could say To win this fight Explanation: In the midst of a heated argument of where you both see the relationship going, you come to the realisation that this back and forth is going nowhere, no matter how desperately you want the outcome to change. Even the lyric ‘to win this fight’ sounds defeated. The beat is also dragging and sad to emphasize this. Lyric: Cause you hesitate much more than I could ever estimate And that's alright Cause I'm not insane, I'm only a fool for you But I couldn't stay away, yeah even if I wanted to So what am I supposed to do Explanation: With the same defeated beat, you can finally see that your partner is always hesitating, never fully in the relationship and you always have to estimate the next move which is exhausting. The desperation to get through to your partner to say, ‘I am only a fool for you’, 100% committed to make it work and wanting to make it clear that you still want to be with them. You don’t want to end it ‘couldn’t stay away’ your partner has also not made it clear if they truly want to stay in this relationship and now in frustration you ask ‘what am I suppose to do?’ Lyric: You don't have to be the one to lose You don't have to be the one to tell a lie You don't have to be the one to choose You don't have to be the one to say goodbye And I don't have to be the one to take all this Time you've wasted being dishonest Explanation: With all that you have been through, and finally being at a breaking point, you let it out all what you never had a chance to say in fear for them leaving you. When the relationship was too fragile to voice your concerns. You can hear the frustration in his voice. ‘you don’t have to be the one to lose’ - if you end it, you are losing them and you feel like they won’t feel the same way about you. You don’t have to be the one to tell a lie - To lie to yourself that you can keep this relationship going, that everything will be ok You don’t have to be the one to choose - To make the final decision to make it work or to end it You don't have to be the one to say goodbye -To everything you have done to try to make it work And I don't have to be the one to take all this time you've wasted being dishonest - Now standing up for yourself that you will not be taken advantage of this way, you don’t have to be in this cycle anymore. But they are turning ‘a blind eye to a feeling’ to what you are feeling and what they are feeling. Lyric: So this is the only chance that you'll get to see this through My eyes before I believe in something better than you Explanation: Now setting a boundary, you are done this this toxic cycle. You have tried everything, and this is the last time. Because you know that you deserve ‘something better’ than this. Even the lyric ‘my eyes before I believe in something better than you’ - his voice is more clearer, indicating that he is breaking out of the cycle and realising that he should not be in this relationship. He is done with the anger and frustration. Lyric: I'm all out of life, babe It's all gone sideways Tell me, how can I keep this a secret When you couldn't either It's funny how we ended up here So fucked up and full of fear Explanation: Again with the defeated voice emphasising that he is ‘out of life’ the relationship is sucking the life out of him. It is exhausting as it keeps going ‘sideways’. It is no secret that their relationship is on the rocks. Everyone around them have noticed it. ‘It’s funny how we ended up here so fucked up and full of fear - It is sarcastic in a way that they were once full of love and joy, now the foundation is build with fear, both to scared to end it, but also afraid of what their relationship will be like if they stay together. Both holding onto a thread. Lyric: My eyes before I believe in something better than you Something better than you, something better than you Something better than you Believe in something better than you Something better than you, something better than you Something better than you Believe in something better than you Explanation: The repetition of this amplify the need to find ‘something better’. Convincing yourself to end the relationship because there will be ‘something better’ out there. Then at the very end and calmingly saying ‘believe in something better than you’ you have accepted it.
