I normally agree with everything you say, but it seems counterproductive to be saving for Greece instead of paying 25% interest on a credit card payment. Trips are cool, but they can not afford the trip, especially when it’s almost 25% of their yearly take home income. Maybe do a smaller trip instead since like you said life is short. I think they’d be most motivated to save for the trip and work overtime if they pay off cc’s then save for the trip.

Everyone has their own priorities in life and not everyone wants to be gazelle intense with paying off debt. I don't think saving for that trip is burdensome. They have a whole year to save $7k which comes out to $582/month. With bonuses and over time they have enough room in the budget for it. I think as long as they're not going further into debt they should do it.

I have a question. The reader mentioned that they saved for the wedding and honeymoon and were able to pay for those in cash but ended up racking up $5k in debt on their honeymoon. I'm assuming that means they did not save enough/account for expenses while on the trip. Is that $10k for Greece going to cover those variable expenses while she's there? If not, she may want to save a little extra, which seems totally doable, before going to avoid adding more debt. Thoughts?

Wow this was so clear and easy to understand. When their combined paycheck and their monthly expenses were shown at First, it was overwhelming... I am always surprised at how few sinking funds there are. No auto maintenance (saving for tires and oil changes), no clothing budget item for one of the budgets with 6 kids, no savings for medical/dental, nothing for realistic misc expenses. I know these are just snapshots of different budgets, but I think not saving at least something for realistic true expenses will make the budgeters feel like failures or still going into debt. Obviously this awesome budgeting process will hopefully bring that needed awareness but I wish it were mentioned more that there might be gaps.

I love you and your ability to look at the big picture while planning finances that don’t “fit” into prescribed patterns. Life is short and must be enjoyed. A person who can meet a savings goal for a vacation will be incentivized to save for paying down debt. Great advise. Keep em coming!
@Olivia-bt9hs4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that life is short. Especially since this couple isn't in massive CC debt and they seem so have control of their spending. Now if someone was $40,000 in CC debt and had student loans, I do think that paying debt should be a priority. However I definitely think an emergency fund of at least 3 months should be saved first before a large international vacation. But to be honest, at this rate with COVID, I think this couple is going to have some extra time to save for the Greece trip!

I like your approach on assigning every dollar a name. It is so easy to spend money that is not going to a purpose. Thank you Miko.
@annevanacker40444 жыл бұрын
I don't necessarily have a problem with saving for a goal while paying off debt (those of us with mortgages do that all the time). However, they don't have nearly enough in their Emergency Fund-2000?! That doesn't even cover one month of expenses! It's not even enough to cover a major home repair, should they need one. They should have that built up to 6-8 months before saving for a trip. And what about retirement savings? Those weren't mentioned at all. Bottom line is that they truly cannot afford this trip-I totally understand about life being short and having great family memories. But with the basic financial security elements for their future missing, I feel that this budget is irresponsible.
@yojs17_4 жыл бұрын
I agree, they need more savings. But Miko says, save whatever helps you sleep at night. So if they can sleep with $2000 emergency and then spend $10,000 on a vacation, then that works for them.
@crystalgale154 жыл бұрын
I guess this is where individuality and priority comes in. Every person is different. There are people who even feels okay and happy with just $1000 until they paid off all their debt. And i think since they don't have kids, this couple don't have the urge to save up that much. We will never know. 😊
@joannwagner49404 жыл бұрын
If they do what Miko recommends in only 1 year time their credit card debt is gone and they will have 13K saved. They have 2K plus 3K already and are budgeting $100 a month $1.5K going into savings then debt.. That doesn't touch their bonus and overtime money.. If they want to go on vacation next year being basically debt free and money in the bank I think that is very responsible.
@annevanacker40444 жыл бұрын
@@joannwagner4940 assuming that over 1 year everything goes perfectly- no job loss (a potential issue during the pandemic), neither of them gets seriously ill and can't work, and they incur no major expenses due to accidents or other causes. They are missing out on years of compounding on retirement savings to go on a vacation. So, no, I don't think that's responsible because with this plan, they have a nice monthly budget, but they are focused too much on living in the moment while ignoring the future. Just my opinion, I am pretty conservative when it comes to personal finance.
@brinnyxcore4 жыл бұрын
We have to remember we are only seeing the surface. In my paycheck budget, I don't show any retirement. That's because it is automatically taken out by my employer so it's technically not part of my income. That could easily be the case with this couple as I feel like it may be the case with many? I guess I could be wrong.

I guess my question for them would be- does the trip need to cost $10,000? They could go for fewer days or lower their daily spending while there. Or stay at a cheaper hotel/accommodation. $10,000 seems like a ton for just one trip...assuming it’s a few weeks and not 1+ month long trip.

I see that nothing is planned for health care or a dentist. Also is their 1 time haul of protein, and their big garden coming out of the food budget? And when laid off work, a 1 month emergency savings does not really take care of much. I don't see a car repair or maintenance fund. As well, in my case, I might feel nervous about the debt vs Greece savings, and would feel better using this very budget, but in a different order. Pay of fthe planned amount for the debt first, then start the savings for Greece. Same money but different order so that the fun challenge is Greece, after the already acknowledged dreary saving for debt. Love seeing these videos as it triggers questions for my own layout, and things I may have left out for myself :)

Americans do have the expenses you mention, and I agree with you - true expenses that come along at irregular intervals are completely missing from this budget. Where is the savings for insurance and taxes? What if they need a new roof, or a new furnace? And with the current pandemic, I hope their jobs are secure - because that is not the case for many Americans. We have not even scratched the surface of the economic fallout from the pandemic. Given their lack of savings and the current economic environment, it looks to me like they are skating on thin ice and hoping everything is going to be ok. Just my opinion- as mentioned above, if it works for them, and they can sleep soundly at night, then good for them!

Find you average pay... I took all my paychecks added them up then divided by the number of checks received. I've only been working since March and my income varies so much. I haven't received a "normal" check because with Covid19 my hours are increased along with receiving CARES act pay.

Question my husband gets paid Every thursday I get paid twice a month should I be waiting until I get paid to combine them as opposed to using it? I have been adding it to my budget before I get paid.

Based on her video. It would best to combine paychecks. I like that she said to wait and hold the paycheck. I think that would help the process of thinking where should the go!

I noticed I’ve been doing my budget monthly rather than paycheck by paycheck. Am I doing this wrong ? My husband and I get paid unemployment checks weekly at the moment, as I am currently furloughed from my job without pay until further notice and my husbands design jobs are lower due to the COVID 19 crisis.

I really think it depends on what works for you. Does budgeting once a month make it easier? Or harder? What works for one won’t work for everyone!

@@mblackburn1986415 I used to budget monthly, but now I budget paycheck so I can put money towards my goals every 2 weeks (if I can) versus waiting until the end of the month or allowing the money to go elsewhere. Some people budget by "paying themselves" first, meaning saving and then spending the rest of your money on your monthly expenses. I find that Miko's method encourages you to take care of your bills and variable expenses first before saving and paying of debt.
