I have 10 hives and located Sunshine Coast QLD. this year we had dreadfull bouts of frost. Me being away in the NT at the time, did not know how bad it was. On return I found that all the Paradise hives (9 of them) survived and the only timber one was lost to extreame frost. Paradise hives came through winter in very strong colonies. Most are in condition suitable for splits if needed. Note, I have kept bees for over 35 years.

On the hive beetles, I’ve been sitting by my hive on a summer evening, and witnessed a beetle fly straight onto the box, and run down to the entry and in. Can’t really stop them. I think if the hive is vigorous enough, it should keep numbers down. I’ve never had enough to slime a hive. I reckon that if a hive does get slimed, then there’s a good chance something wrong to begin with.

I’m in my 3rd year beekeeping with a paradise box. The bloke I got the box from had it for a number of years. It’s still going strong and the bees in it beard less than all my conventional boxes. I have the pest tray model. I’ve just started using the peppermint boiled lollies for beetle control and it is working🍺🍺

hive beetle and wax moth both lay eggs in the comb hatch into a maggot mature then hive beetles fall to the ground and metamorphism back in to an adult, wax moths form a cocoon in side the hive and metamorphism back in to an adult. they make good fish bait or chicken feed .

Not a beekeeper myself, but I do quite a bit of painting. I think you might want to try and not spray paint onto the interlocking top/bottom edges around those new foam boxes. Heat will make paint become a bit adhesive. I think that explains the difficulty you had separating the bottoms and other layers. Keep up the good work, love the videos.

I think those hives will do a great job for you there, I have a question I have been going to ask you for a while now and keep forgetting to ask. Why do you all there keep so much room on top of your hives ( between top frames an the lid . I know that helps your wife A LOT with more wax for all her candle making and other jobs etc. but it sure makes a mess ??. It is good you are able to start putting your video’s out again with the start of your new season. We really enjoy all your video’s so keep your video’s coming when possible. THANKS

whats the difference between Aussie and USA bee's ? Yappy handles bees with no bee suit, or gloves. Stand in the swarms and picks up handfulls of bees and plops them in the frames. If you did that you would be stung badly. So i figure there must be a difference in the bees

Has anyone done a study to see which last longer, wood or styrene?

I’d be putting money on the high density polystyrene, but I guess both will last if looked after. I’ve been running a couple of Paradise Hives for the past 7 years in our backyard. No sign of them degrading, aside from one box that I poorly stored with some built frames in it - wax moth was the result and they ate into the foam. I cleaned them out and repaired it, and the bees still use it. Mine are glued with a moisture cure adhesive, and painted. Bees over-winter well, and do not beard much in summer (I’m in Canberra). Local supplier has had difficulty bringing the Paradise range in from Finland, and has now come up with their own design, which looks pretty good (I’m not allowed to have more hives though, so will stick with what I’ve got).

The beetles I saw at about the 20 minute mark didn't look or run like shb. More like small cockroach, which arn't a problem.
