১৯৫৬ সালে নারায়ণগঞ্জে কয়েকজন ব্যবসায়ী মিলে গড়ে তোলেন ইস্ট পাকিস্তান স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জ এসোসিয়েশন। সেখানে আলাদা করে কোন কোম্পানি তালিকাভুক্ত হতো না। বরং করাচি স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জে তালিকাভুক্ত বিভিন্ন কোম্পানির শেয়ার এখানে লেনদেন হতো। করাচিতে লেনদেন শুরু হওয়ার কিছু পর টেলিফোনে দাম জেনে তার ভিত্তিতে এখানে কেনাবেচা করতেন অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের সদস্যরা। স্বাধীনতা পরবর্তী সমাজতান্ত্রিক বাংলাদেশে বেশ কয়েক বছর স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জ বন্ধ ছিল। মূলত বহুজাতিক প্রতিষ্ঠানের শেয়ার কেনাবেচা দিয়ে সত্তরের দশকেই পুনরায় শুরু হয়। রাষ্ট্রায়ত্ত্য প্রতিষ্ঠানের পাশাপাশি ধীরে ধীরে তালিকাভুক্ত হতে থাকে স্থানীয় উদ্যোগে গড়ে ওঠা কোম্পানিগুলোও। দুটি ধসে অনেক মানুষ লোকসান করলেও দীর্ঘমেয়াদী বিনিয়োগ করে ঢাকার শেয়ারবাজারে সৌভাগ্য গড়েছেন অনেক বুদ্ধিমান মানুষ। এ বাজারের গন্তব্য বহুদূর, বিশ্বাস করেন ডিএসই ব্রোকারস অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের সাবেক সভাপতি আহমেদ রশিদ লালী।
