My father passed away 5 years ago. He taught me every Byrds song he knew. I grew up listening to this and countless other amazing Byrds songs. He also grew up around the Coal Mines of WVA and VA so this song really struck home from him. As I’m writing this I have a guitar under my arm. I know he’s up there playing with his heroes. Gene Clark and David Crosby. Luckily we are blessed to still have Hillman and Mcguinn. I go see Roger anytime he’s in town. His wife is from my hometown Roanoke VA. God speed my friend

As I was born in Cardiff South Wales I have regularly visited every town in Wales mentioned in this Byrds release so it means so much to me! l am now a young 75 and as a teen through the1960s I enjoyed the London club scene big time and all my pals thought The Byrds outstripped the likes of The Beatles and The Stones by miles! Hanging on the wall in my studio, in a place of honour since 1965 after I obtained it during my first visit to Arlington Virginia is an album cover containing a vinyl LP of Mr Tambourine Man signed by the entire group which I treasure to this day. When I met Mick Jagger in Mustique in 1988, as we both shared the same Italian architect Mario Spinella, when we built our villas on Mustique and St Vincent I showed him the signed LP which he would have bought at any price, but was not for sale and remains priceless to this day. At least then I got Mick to sing at my Norwegian wife's 40th Birthday party celebration's in January 1989 on Basils Bar in Mustique and Ringo Star and Barbara Bach turned up so a great party that finished at 8 am the following morning! I still listen to the Byrds at least 2 or 3 times a week. They were then and to this day remain the best Folk Rock group EVER!!!

Of course, McGuinn's magnificent, unique Rick 12 is the thing that stands out most, but I hear more. Crosby's rhythm guitar is masterful. He's much under-unappreciated in that band. However, Hillman's bass part on this song is truly revolutionary for its time. Just as imaginative in a simpler way than McCartney who gets so much more credit, Hillman was an innovative and melodic bass player who also was much under-appreciated in that band. As a virtuoso mandolin player, Hillman was, perhaps, misplaced on bass, but he did it more than justice with his highly musical ear and imagination. This is a high-water mark for them.

The words were by a Welsh miner/poet name of Idris Davies (1905-53), part of a poem "Gwalia Deserta" that had several more verses than are included in the song. Dylan Thomas read it out during a radio broadcast, and later included it in one of his books. Some years afterwards, Pete Seeger came across it and set it to music. It was partly inspired by a mine disaster, but not the Aberfan one which @ndy-go-blue60 seems to be referring to - that occurred many years after Davies' death.

Huh, I am 74 (2 months off 75) and I still remember the first time I heard this and where I heard it. I was 17 years old and I had just met my future wife in a mate's house where a large group of us would congregate to listen to and make music. This was an immediate hit with all of us because we knew Idris Davies' poetry (we were born, raised and educated slap bang in the middle of the area where this song is set) and, of course for that reason we had all heard Pete Seeger's version and, because we had that connection (my dad, like the dads of some of those friends was a coal miner) we liked it very much , too but this version was something else. Ringing guitars sounding like bells (at least they did to us back then) and the close vocal harmonies just grip you, don't they. I still love it and I still love Seeger's version and the obvious passion he felt while singing it. By the way, we had a record import shop in a nearby town where we could order albums already released in the US but had not yet been released in the UK. There was a premium to be paid but we paid it willingly just to be ahead of the curve. I believe this was one of those albums released simultaneously on both sides of the pond, a rarity back then. Maybe it was because the Byrds had already had two massive hit singles here. Kids, eh? Halcyon days, to be sure.☺

The closest I got to seeing the Byrds was a band called Bobby Riggs and the Chevelles. They were the house band for a teen night spot in Saginaw called Daniel’s Den. A group known for its chameleon style, they once performed the Byrds' first album start to finish, note for note, complete with the jangly twelve-string guitar, and perfect harmonies. It was amazing. They wrapped up the first set with Bells of Rhymney, take a well-deserved break, and then they returned to the stage they went straight through the whole album again! The crowed went wild!

Apparently for the original recording, Roger's Ricky is indeed in Drop-D tuning, I didn't know that until today actually. This guy's video explains that he doesn't tune his Ricky to Drop-D when playing the song live, for various reasons, but the rhythm guitarist may tune to Drop-D. You can play it both ways but this guy says the Drop-D chord shapes are a bit different the way Roger originally played it. chordu.com/chords-tabs-bells-of-rhymney-in-drop-d-tuning-id_0UUKFA32N88
