On people being surprised to see you in your truck out there. When I lived in Sedona in the 70’s & 80’s, I would take my 2WD F-250 out on the steep trails in the red rock. Only to have the “Pink Jeep” tours come by and tell me that I shouldn’t be out there disrupting their business cause I ruining their image. 🤣

Sand or Rock = lower tire pressure. Thanks for sharing your outing.
@CactusAtlasАй бұрын
Absolutely! We've not been doing that just due to a time crunch in refilling (that and having no way to monitor pressure easily while airing back up). That's about to be remedied so hopefully if we go off-roading in the future we'll be better prepared. 👍
@CCaddyАй бұрын
@ yeah it’s a pain for most to deal with. But I take it as break time to stretch the legs and lower or air up coming and going. Little compressor and hose with air chuck built in + gauge. Then just do it cause you’ll save your teeth, tires, kidneys, and suspension parts!
@CactusAtlasАй бұрын
We have the compressor, just doesn't have a built in gauge. Something I've been looking into for Glenn. Any recommendations, by chance?

Glad the both of you didn't get stuck! I need to do more off-roading to be intimate with the scaling system, but to your point, there were way more difficulties on this trail than other 3s you've done before. If they rate it like that, they should point out the gotchas, like the deep sand at times and that really steep section. As you said, point out things like flattening your tires, using 4 high & low, etc. Thanks for the trip!!

I live in the desert and even though it has it's beauty my family and I go up to Prescott, Pine , Strawberry and Flagstaff when we are coming down the mountains into the desert valley I feel kinda sad ... many many years ago those places in Az were affordable and we regret not buying a small cabin...now everything is extremely expensive. We have a ZR2 Bison and it's amazing how far you can take it if you're careful. For sand, it helps if you lock it in gear so it doesn't power out. With blow sand, airing down to 15psi for a ZR2 seems to be the sweet spot at least for ours it works pretty well. As far as ratings, Sand Hollow and Moab seem to be the most consistent, but Moab 3 is definitely easier than a Sand Hollow "3". To help with the departure issue you might look at getting a hitch slider. The hitch slider sounds terrible when it scrapes, but that will keep most things off the back bumper. We would take our ZR2 or a stock Tacoma down that trail without any issues, but we have done a lot of trails over the years in many different stock trucks. Overall I think a 2-3 is a good rating for that trail.

I highly recommend a power tank co2 tank system to air your tires up. On my Jeep, I had all 4 tires aired up from 12psi to 35 psi in about 3 minutes. Only down side is when you’re empty you out of air. I usually could do 7 fill ups before getting the co2 tank refilled.
@CactusAtlas7 ай бұрын
Dang. That's a fast fill up! 😂
@RickZackExploreOffroad7 ай бұрын
I prefer a ARB compressor for the reason you mention, running out of air. I have mine mounted in the engine compartment and turned on via a switch in the cab. It is a little slower though, usually takes me about 5-6 minutes to air up the 35's from 15-35 PSI.

If Glen is seriously considering a van, most of those, unless made accordingly, DO NOT do well in this terrain. I've watched enough van life channels to learn about them. I did get a higher clearance one by chance, I got lucky, but I still would never take it on these types of roads. This was awesome! I love watching these types because I would never do this on my own and I don't know anyone who does, so that was way cool to experience...even if it was on a screen.

I was also quite surprised by the sand. A little nerve racking at points. We went counter clockwise, and I think the difficult spot was a little easier going uphill. I also agree though that a 3 rating is a little light. Between that one obstacle and the sand, I'd say at least a 4. Remember that the sand gets softer as the temps increase. Could be really difficult on a hot day. West side was some of the worst washboard we've ever experienced!

If you haven't done it already, you should put Bitter Springs Trail (back country byway) on your list. OnX says it's a 5, but that rating seems high to me for what it was. There are rock garden sections off the main trail, but completely avoidable. I would say Slim is plenty capable for Bitter Springs.

I often see smaller vehicles like side by sides with flags, but to be honest, never really considered it for my truck. But you got me thinking about it, and this is a very good idea. Somewhat new at this, but some of those hills could pose dangerous situations where a flag might signal to someone else that I’m coming. I’ll be adding this to our equipment. Glad you mentioned it.

@CactusAtlas we go to logandale all the time. We are actually going tomorrow in utv. We have lighted whips with flags. It makes such a difference especially in some of those blind corners. I see a lot of jeeps there but not trucks, but a flag or lighted whip from a company like m&b whips( seamless plug) is really something that simple and can save you from a head on. At the dunes you can't run without one. Doesn't matter the vehicle.
