Note to self: :) Full flip touch screen :) Quick Autofocus :) Touch-screen autofocus :) Dedicated Movie Mode :) built-in ND filters :) time-lapse feature built-in (no app required) :) 10 bit 4:2:2 broadcast quality :) mic jack :) headphone jack :) bad ass lens hood :| 1-inch sensor :| Slo-mo 1080p 120fps :( starts to look noisy for video at 1600 ISO in low light (native 400 ISO) :( Some delay in on-and-shoot (must wait for lens to extend) - vs RX10 Mark III (bigger zoom range, lighter weight, lens aperture ring, slo-mo 1080p 240fps, no ND filters)

I always like the reviews that come from The Camera Store. They're generally honest appraisals and don't pull any punches or hedge in an effort to avoid saying anything too negative about other camera brands that they might carry. I also like the way the reviews focus (no pun intended!) not just on image quality, but overall usability, along with any potential pros and cons.

Dennis Olof The Gh4 already had it. The recording options seem like a carbon copy from the Gh4 I also saw that it had the 100-200 mbps ALL I 1080p. Also DCI 4k at 24fps. Panasonic practically unlocked the full force of this processor in this affordable well thought out package.

Chris, after a zillion articles and comparisons online your video and evaluation put me over the line, I just ordered the FZ2500. Don't get to handle cameras every day, most show rooms around my area don't even have a Panasonic FX2500 for me to hold and understand what is good and not so good about the camera. You, on the other hand, get to do that all time, and that reinforces my decision making. Thank you for your reviews.

I have one of these and I use the crap out of it. One point that is really important to me is the unlimited record time. I have a Sony rx10 Iv as well and I forget about the 29/30 minute recording limit. I’m a solo creator and it really stinks when you don’t realize that you just lost the last 10 minutes because the camera stopped recording. Anyway, I love the FZ2500. I've heard many comments about the fz2000 not being as sharp as the Sony. I don't doubt this to be the case, however, I'm wondering why it is that in every single side by side image comparison between these two cameras the Sony always looks one or two stops darker than the panasonic? I've seen this odd difference in every comparison I've researched on these cameras.

After considerable research I ended up buying a fz2500 for a light weight day to day and travel camera instead of packing my Nikon D810 and multiple lenses. My comment and question is "what's with 4K video" it is very hard to find a mid range good quality Bridge camera without the over riding focus being on VIDEO? I just want a camera to shoot stills!!!
@theSUBVERSIVE8 жыл бұрын
If I had the budget, I would buy a GH5 - a focal reducer and the Sigma f/1.8 duo - and have this as a b-cam so I don't have to worry about tele lenses in the GH5 for the most things I would shoot, then also have a Mavic Pro for some drone shots, buy a gimbal and that would be my excellent on the go kit. I just wished it had 240fps but if the GH5 has it, then it won't matter as much.
@raksh98 жыл бұрын
I use the GH4 and native Panasonic and Voigtlander lenses, and the FZ2500 is going to fit in just fine as both a B-cam and complementary cam. The FZ2500 will be great for run and gun scenarios when moving from indoors to outdoors, as the ND filters can be changed without having to screw on or unscrew something in the front. It will give the ability to quickly zoom from wide to tele without having to change lenses, allowing one to get shots that may be missed during lens changes. On shoots that are in decent light, and documentary rather than beauty B-roll, the FZ2500 will do really well.

Love that the bass guitar intro is back. Sad there was no Jordan for the video part. :( I have an RX10ii, which I'm mostly happy with. However, the lack of touch screen, inability to flip/rotate the screen, and a number of other small annoyances means I'll be taking a closer look at the FZ2500. I'll miss the faster lens and quality slow motion of the RX10ii though. Decisions, decisions... Wonder if anyone will consider a trade.
@stefpix6 жыл бұрын
I am in the same boat. I shoot Sony and biggest issue is moving the focus point with the click wheel (although it has face and eye AF, not always reliable with groups of people). I bought and never loved the RX10iii. ND filters and touchscreen are definitely a plus. What did you end up doing?
@HomesickMac8 жыл бұрын
Great review, agree on every point. Bought this camera mostly for video and corporate filming, great feel in the hand, fantastic menus (my first Panasonic besides for and old camcorder years back), love the autofocus and customizable buttons. Of course one always loooves his last and newest camera but I did a long research before hitting that order button. Was watching preview videos, your review of RX10 III and many others, GH4 would have been too expensive in the end, with a GH5 around the corner.... I was just watching your G7 review again because I'd need a B camera for filming the interviewer, and I'm mostly thinking of having the same video profile on both cameras (both Lumix, right?) and save some editing time, as well as the G7 still being a great device.
@AgnostosGnostos4 жыл бұрын
Common amateur photographers love the power zoom but with interchangeable lenses the power zoom isn't very common. With bright expensive lenses it is very rare. However during the film era Minolta has a Xi series of a-mount lenses with motorized zoom. The 28-80mm xi f4-5.6, 28-105mm xi f3.5-4.5, 35-200mm xi f4.5-5.6, 80-200mm xi f4.5-5.6, 100-300mm xi f4.5-5.6.

The RX10 II is still the best in my opinion. Can't beat that constant f/2.8 zoom. The variable aperture just kills it for me on any camera. I hate that. btw if you want even better camera than the FZ2500 at less than half the price take a look at the FZ300. That camera is the best all around camera on the planet right now at the lowest price. The FZ300 is a camera for everyone even more so than the FZ2500. That's what I believe. And I'm surprised TCSTV hasn't review that excellent camera. It really deserves praise. Very underrated.

Awesome vid as usual! I suspect that the Panasonic was more accurate at autofocus in your test in significant part because its ISO or F Stop (or both) were set to expose much brighter. Consider the difference in (1) exposure that you see on the brick wall in each and every one of the Panasonic vs. Sony frames from 9:20-9:55 in the video. Moreover, notice (2) how much more the background (e.g. the car) is in focus in the Sony's frame; it's clearly shot at a higher effective F Stop. Without equal light hitting the sensor (due to differences in F Stops) or equal gain (through ISO settings) there cannot be an equitable comparison. Thus one would need to re-do the test to compare the relative autofocus capabilities. But awesome video and thank you again, "Crushin' it" Chris and "Jammin" Justin!

Like to begin saying I love your reviews. Just the facts in a well presented "story" as you go out shooting and using the device. BTW, I'm a Canon man and this is definitely on my "next to buy" possibilities. This was 7 years ago. I was waiting for maybe another upgraded camera since I had the fz1000 (original). Of course now the mkii is out and newer but ultimately I decided to still get the 2500 for extra reach, faster burst mode, ND filter etc. The 2500 still sells for 1249 CAD and up. I did look at Sony rx10 mk iv but it's almost double the cost for not much more benefit (a bit more reach and a tiny bit better aperture settings is not worth 1000.00 to me. Selling my fz1000 and going with fz2500 with the fl550l external flash and lumix remote shutter release (eliminates camera shake alltogether). Also got a good cold shoe mount shotgun mic for video. This is honestly best balance of sensor size vs zoom range. A dslr with several lenses to cover up tp 480mm equiv would cost way more (I ultimately sold my dslr and lenses for the fz1000) and be much more bulk to carry around! As they say best camera is the one you have with you all the time and all in one for me is best.

I shoot currently with Canon but the weight of all the gear and especially the 100-400 mm L is just too much for vacations as I get older. I was close to going for the RX10 III as a walk about and 4K video for an upcoming cruise to Antarctica. You just convinced me the FZ2500 is far better for my use, I agree ND filters are a must for video. Thanks guys, great reviews as always. One question, do you think I could be won over totally and sell all the Canon gear or do you feel I'd miss the quality for stills? I shoot wild life here in Florida mostly.

What is the manual focus like during a zip zoom? If you auto focus on a far distant subject at maximum zoom, then switch to manual focus mode and fast zoom out to wide and back in again at close up, does the lens maintain focus throughout the range and hold it at the wide angle end? Almost performing like a par focal lens ( although I think the lens itself is not actually a par focal lens?) Thanks

You didnt spend much time comparing menu layout and access in the FZ versus the RX. Ive had both in earlier models and found the Panasonic menus more intuitive and easy, the Sony tended to bury important settings and logic wasn't as smooth. Not having seen the FZ2500 any comments on this?
@genjii9318 жыл бұрын
Looks like a good option for vloggers, especially with the LCD that flips out to the side, so you can still use external mic on the top and have it on a small hand-held tripod. Plus mic jack AND headphone jack FTW. Plus ND filters. This is really making me look forward to the GH5; Panasonic's products have really matured in the video game. I wish they'd make a video-rich APS-C camera to allow for much better low-light performance, but no idea what mount they could use. Someone needs to come up with another open mount format for APS-C like they did with m43. That might've saved Samsung's NX camera line.

Thanks for the review, very helpful. The FZ2500 looks a chunky, solid camera. Like the touchscreen etc-the stills images look crisp, colourful and detailed, although it seems the highlights get clipped on some pictures. I wish that it had a longer, constant aperture zoom, like the FZ200.

Updating my comment, some things are puzzling me. Why doesn't the silent shutter mode stay after changing the photo or filming modes. Each time I have to activate it again. I could understand that this choice gets forgotten when turning the camera off oand on again (although I'd prefer the camera to remember it was off and leave it there). Also, the FZ2000 wouldn't remember my custom WB settings: I change the customizable settings options to different K temperatures and when I get back, they're gone. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, not sure, it's still a very new device for me.. Still love it, great images, even in low light.

@ScottOwens288 жыл бұрын
One big question looming for this cam is what I call, "Micro" jello shake at long tele end combined with the OIS+ 5-axis stabilizer system. As I said in the previous comment, there are very few reviews/previews on this cam that illustrate the critical questions us working Joe's need answered, etc. On several of these short sample FZ2500 YT videos it shows a strange "micro" jellow jitter; Im not sure if it is physical handheld error OR a possible flaw in the combination of both the optical & electrical stabilizer. Again, I've seen this maybe twice and it seems to show at the long end of the focal lengths, etc. Would love to see a test of the 5-axis stabilizer on the FZ2500!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks guys!
@meganvictoria59828 жыл бұрын
This micro jello is the stabiliser working hard, which happens on long focal length hand held shots where the hands are not particularly steady. You see on lots of Panasonic cameras. I saw this on reviews of the FZ1000 but it was never a problem when I had it so long as you hold the camera properly when shooting. The stabiliser, even in 4K, is very good.

@theSUBVERSIVE8 жыл бұрын
The FZ1000 was a better value for money and it made Sony come up with the RX10 II sooner than they wanted because of that, FZ1000 not only had 4K compared to the original RX10 but it was much cheaper, in some ways the FZ1000 had already beaten the original RX10. If you don't mind the smaller range and appreciate the extra aperture, the LX15 is a really nice option - even more with 15min 4K video recording while the RX100 is not only more expensive but it only records 4K for 5 min, but at least it has built in ND. The shallow DOF you get in the LX15 is just a shallow as the LX100, which has a bigger sensor, all because of the f/1.4 aperture. Also the LX15 the 5-axis IS which should help with video. I think the LX15 should be better than the Canon G7X II. I didn't dig too deep into this camera but there are already some good reviews out there, I watched some of them but as this is not a camera I want I don't quite remember the pros and cons, so go check them out.

theSUBVERSIVE thanks a lot, your comment was precious! I've watched many videos, but an overall handling experience (and maybe a comparison to something else but the RX100) is missing! I'm talking about something like jpeg processing, dynamic range, focus speed comparison, not only a "vlog camera" point of view!

evvivaDio it's basically the same sensor so DR should be about the same with an edge to the Sonys that have the stacked sensor and copper wiring tech that also has faster readouts. Point to point, as Chris mentioned, the DFD from Panasonic is pretty quick but tracking AF might be better on the newest RX100 - but not so much the older ones, I've seen some vloggers struggling with the AF. Didn't CTSTV review the G7X II? But as they showed it in this video, the LX15 review with the comparisons you want might be coming soon.

+theSUBVERSIVE: I agree with most of what you said, with a few caveats: the LX15 virtual 5-axis stabilization won't work with 4k video, and it's handling seems it main weak point (as opposed to FZ2000 which seems a masterpiece in this regard). It's lens is also slower than Canon's G7X except for

That FS5 video looks great. Which lens?

I have looked long and hard about the V-Log upgrade and think it's a poor show on Panasonic that it's not included it in the price, as I'm sure the GH5 will include this profile, however moving from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera where you had no option but to grade the image, this camera is a joy to use and to get broadcast quality images at 4K straight out this camera has to be commended, It's by far the easiest I've used in years and love it to bit's.

Are Chris and Jordan full time videographers at The Camera Store? Or do they actually work behind the counter? I always assumed the latter for some reason. But maybe transitioned into full time KZbin content creators for TCSTV?
@TheCameraStoreTV8 жыл бұрын
We're usually behind the counter. We shoot one day of the week and do our other testing, editing, etc on our own time. Jordan @ TCSTV

TheCameraStoreTV Do you guys own TCS? I always assumed you did, especially since you said you put YT proceeds back into the store, but I heard you reference a boss in another video.

How is the auto focus in video? Can it track or does it hunt like my GH4?
@TheCameraStoreTV7 жыл бұрын
It's noticeably better than the GH4, but still not quite as bullet-proof as the Canon DualPixel AF cameras. Jordan @ TCSTV

Would you say it has better video AF than the RX10 III?

TheCameraStoreTV hi do you think there's much difference iq between the fz2500 and rx10iii?
@mg4287 жыл бұрын
Chris, do you think DFD is even better than phase detect AF of, say, A6300, in a) video; b) stills? Do you have a video demonstrating that? You had a comparison video among XT-2, GH4, EM-1 and A6000 which did not have PDAF.

DFD does not work in video.
@mg4287 жыл бұрын
Gabriel F Are you sure? In the below link it says "When shooting with our production review unit, the DFD technology worked well, with very quick focus acquisition times. For video recording, the focus transitions between focus distances was precise and smooth with little to not hunting." www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/panasonic-gh4/panasonic-gh4TECH.HTM

To be fair, I read a couple of times that DFD didn't work in video, and assumed it was common sense. Upon a quick search, it seems like I was wrong, or at least it's not commonly stated that DFD doesn't work in video. However, I've tested the FZ1000 and own the RX10 III. The FZ1000 does focus quicker than the RX10 III in stills mode, but in video mode, the AF on the RX10 seems a lot more decisive. It doesn't hunt a lot looking for the right direction to move, so it seems like Sony also employs some technology to aid it's CDAF system. The FZ1000, though, hunts quite a bit more and takes even longer to focus than the RX10 in video. I don't think the FZ2500 would quite compete with PDAF solutions in video.

Question - is the low light also tested in the dark room contrary to the FZ1000, which was under a blanket kind of, pointed out to be ..too dark... and having strange color distortions? Second question , Would it be good to shoot at Music Stage performances, where lighting poses challenges? Thxs in advance Theo - NL
