Came to Pentax from the Leica M; the Autofocus is lightning fast! Jokes aside, on Pentax DSLRs, a super-bright full view pentaprism allows smooth manual focusing, a feature that on other DSLRs is destroyed because too much emphasis is given on the AF, and the idea that a camera computer must take all control from the user. Because they rely on AF alone, other manufacturers mostly provide small and dull viewfinders. The viewing experience and the overall control over camera cannot compare to the Pentax experience. Pentax DSLR = users have a total control, camera compatible with all lenses ever made. Canon and Nikon DSLR = camera computer takes all control. Use Autofocus or go bust. User is treated like a noob. User must buy latest lenses for best results.

As a 40-year Pentaxian, and a working pro for over 30 years, I appreciated your balanced review of the K-70. I have one and am very pleased (and I can live with the limitations because I mostly shoot landscapes, nature studies, lifestyle, and product shots, not fast-action sports). The one thing that I found absolutely hysterical, however, was your description of the K-70 grip as being really big. I have small hands, and my very first impression, right out of the box, was that the grip must have been designed for toddlers. It felt so small in my little hands that I thought "I'm going to have to be really careful or I'm going to drop this thing," ....for exactly the opposite reason that you feared you might drop it. I wish the camera was bigger, and I wish the grip was much bigger! Anyway, thanks again for the great review. Pentax makes very good (if slightly weird) cameras, and I think you nailed the good and not-so-good points perfectly.

I'm a Pentaxian and do appreciate your reviews, always watch/listen to them with interest. Like most Pentaxians I know, I'm a pretty calm chap. Your views do influence me, and were instrumental in directing me to the K-S2, and before that the K-3 (although I settled for the K-3 II). In time I will get the K-1, and at least in part because your review with Nick Devlin was persuasive. No, angry I aint. I do also enjoy the Northrup's reviews and have not posted angry comments on either of your sites, even though I did offer polite corrections to TN on matters that were not quite factual. A number of reviewers recently did disappoint; Photouniverse (the Trump admirer), and recent Pentax reviewers on DigitalRev. I simply posted a note to say I would not be returning. Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that most of us Pentaxians might not comment but are happy with the videos you make. Don't let a small number of trolls colour your impressions to much. Keep up the good work, and thank you for covering Pentax, it's appreciated.

K-70 is more then awsome. An Aps C DSLR camera, more or less same size as an Micro 4/3 Panasonic G80. Rugged like a tank, I live the North of Scandinavia, were temps can go down below -20 c for days and weeks, the K-70 just keeeps goin. I'm actully amazed, from indoors temp out to - 15 below C, and I do not need to worrie about if the K-70 will work, it just do. The pentaprisma is beutiful, battery? No problems, just make sure to turn of the screen and a full day of shooting in -15C temp, will be fine. It just keeps on goin. Rain and your our for hike or fishing? No problems. Drop it on a rock? (it will just bounce of) No problems. It amazes me, that the modern photo community, cant see that a camera is a tool, ment to used and somewhat abused. Add a few limited primes, like 21mm and 35mm macro and last 77 mm, they all can go in pockets, or a small backpack, and still plenty room for food an water, for a full day of hiking. And as we all know, the Raw files are just amazing, even the very novice can edit them, with out ruin it.

I'm a Pentaxian, and I always love your reviews. You're honest and tell it how it is. We all know (maybe some are in denial?) that Pentax has very poor video support, and its AF is sub-par. The image quality is what they focus on and what we should be buying the camera for. I'm still using a rather dated K-r, but this may be what I finally upgrade to. I was considering the K3, but this is cheaper and will do me just fine.
@starbase2188 жыл бұрын
"We all know (maybe some are in denial?) that (...) its AF is sub-par." What I've noticed is, typically, Pentaxians will say things like "you can compensate for the sub-par AF with technique". But that is an entirely different thing. You can compensate for sub-par AF with any camera. And if you really have to with Pentax, then that's an area where the camera is inferior to the competition. I'm not saying you can't get great action shots with Pentax. That's an entirely different thing. I'm just saying that it might not be as easy with Pentax. Now, this is a sensitive subject, I think, because people will say that the fun in photography is also about developing those skills. If it's easy, where's the challenge in it? And I understand that POV as well. Still, to me, photography in the end is about getting and enjoying the shot, not about having to develop skills because I'm working with a particular camera brand, or feel a certain loyalty toward that brand. Not that I'm shooting action all the time. Maybe, if I was, it would actually not be so much of a problem, because I'd learn those techniques faster. It's just that, when I am shooting moving subjects (which is more than "action photography"), I want to get that shot. I don't want to limit myself to landscapes because that's what the camera excels at. I'm a Pentaxian now, but maybe not for long anymore.

You are NOT an AH, you work very hard at what you do, and it's appreciated. But there are more of us shooting sports with Pentax than you think. I shoot for newspapers here in the Boston area, and I shoot high school sports regularly with my K-3s, and just used my K-1 for the first time on basketball. I will will admit to having to work harder with Pentax, but the reward makes it worth it.

LOL, I do use my K5 with a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 for shooting high school and NFL football. You can find me on the sidelines at the ATL falcons every weekend. AF performance is slow and fishy and I hate the screw drive. Once you've used a Sony A6000 AF system your eyes are opened. However, I was trained as a photographer 20 years ago when people learned the skill of getting a great action shot on manual focusing with only 36 shots in the box. If you want a machine that does photography for you, by all means, buy something fast, super smart and expensive. I stick with my k5 (and will get a k3) because it is a super tough pro body that matches and exceeds the 7D in every aspect for a ton less money. I appreciate youtube reviewers but I'd like to see if any of them have any real photographic skill. I started shooting high school football and weddings with a twin lens Yashica. Handheld meter, no motor drive, no AF--and won awards and got paid. Learn to be a photographer, not a button pusher and you'll learn to appreciate cameras and not expect them to instantly turn you into a Time Life / Nat Geo star.

I fully agree. I,, too, have been using manual cameras since the 1970s. I learned early how to capture movement and how to focus on moving objects using a variety of techniques. I still find the single-point focus on the K3 to be the surest method for achieving pin-point focus. And the video results are always good.
@starbase2186 жыл бұрын
"Buy something fast, super smart and expensive" Sure, if you want to go for something like a new D500, it's more expensive, but it's hardly the only option. I switched from Pentax to Nikon and got a D7100 used, with 35/1.8 and 16-85 VR, for 900 euros. I got some lenses including the 17-55/2.8 and 70-200/4 that were hardly more expensive than what I paid for my Pentax gear (that I also bought used). "Learn to be a photographer, not a button pusher" Learn to spend your hard-earned money on something that works for you and helps you solve problems in getting the results you want.

When I first saw the specs and price of this camera I was legitimately shocked. Yeah, you're missing out on AF performance and video quality, but I think the lower price more than makes up for that. agree on your first sentence, I wonder how many times you need extremely fast AF vs stabilization. Pentax can stabilize any lens adding more low light capabilities, that can't be said from others. I would be more than happy to see Pentax AF to be the greatest, who could complaint about improvements? Of course I have plenty of skills to improve, I think improving yourself is a must regarding the camera system choosen. To agree on your second sentence, I would need to be frustrated, thing I'm not. In fact I'm very happy with my K3II is just great for me.

Pentaxian applauses! It's really a camera with wonderful unique Pentax features, Pixel Shift from its higher class camera, for example. But it's still considered as an entry level camera. How aggressive to the market! I notice the great progress of viewfinder autofocus (especially tracking ability) seen from the video. This is incredible since it means the smaller lag of tracking between Pentax and other brands. Though it takes time to catch on, Pentax s now keeping forward. It's impressive from a Pentax user! I do hope Pentax continues their brilliant track and the market will surprise for it.

Pentax makes great cameras. I have been shooting a k-5ii for years and I love it's size and build when compared to Nikon and Canon. That being said, I am looking to move to something new since I don't have a ton invested in Pentax and I need better AF and tracking for my son's sports. For portraits, macro, landscapes, etc... it is great. It just doesn't seem to be well suited for moving subjects. One item on AF that may not be as meaningful as it was in the past is that it works well in low light. I have an EM10 and it is similar to my old K20d in low light where it just won't grab focus in situations where the K-5ii and beyond would nail it.
@starbase2182 жыл бұрын
Coming here after the DPReview KF video. Man, you were really quite positive about the K-70. And the points of criticism regarding the AF, Pentaxians may not like it, but... yeah, what can you say? As far as I'm concerned those criticisms are justified. But now that the KF is basically this exact same camera, I wonder what lies ahead for Pentax. As my first DSLR was a Pentax, I'd like them to do well. But honestly, I don't see them going anywhere. I'd almost buy a K-5 II (s) and some Limiteds that I saw on a used gear site, for surprisingly low prices. Honestly, I think that that camera is the best they ever made, relative to when it was released anyway. And also, regarding playing to Pentax's strengths. Oh if only I was a bit more nostalgic. But I'm just a bit too practical for that.
@ShutterKnack17 күн бұрын
There's really not much to upgrade for an entry-level camera. It already has everything one needs to take good photographs. Perhaps software improvements but hardware-wise, it is already an excellent performer. Any other improvements like BSI sensor, more phase-detect AFpoints, etc will just push the prices up.

I appreciate that you guys actually do videos about pentax, and yeah, they're not perfect cameras. I would like to politely disagree about the grips though. I'm a lady with not-abnormally beefy hands, and I find their grips to be awesome. It's a preference thing, not a hand size thing.

excellent review.... thanks TCSTV, chris & Jordan.... you made my sunday.. BTW you talked about exclusion of MTF feature, by this do you mean the exclusion of MTF priority program line customization (which is present in the K-3 series) or some other setting??

Hey Chris, love the work you and Jordan do with the videos. I was wondering if you could do a video about the lenses you use, especially that vintage looking one you used in this video on the K-70. There are plenty of reviews about Canon and Nikon lenses, it would be nice to see what the general photographers consensus on the most used Pentax lenses, like from the cheap normal lens to higher level or those small limited lenses (seriously what is limited about them?). I think DXO doesn't do much justice for the lens lineup and that is the most important for any camera system.

Well, here I am, back just a few months after my last comment. I have been having issues with my K-50 and the aperture mechanism. I really like the camera and hope to be able to get it fixed, but I'm also looking to buy another camera body. I've spent most of this weekend comparing the K-70 and the K-3 II, and have decided that the features and price of the K-70 are a better fit for me. However, I am hesitant to buy another mid level camera body because of the problem I'm having with my K-50. I'm hoping that maybe you guys can tell me if the K-70 would be a solid choice, and if it has a different aperture control mechanism. I really like your channel and videos and will likely be calling your store next week to inquire about the possibility of purchasing through you instead of my usual US supplier. Not sure how that would work as far as warranty and such. Thanks again for the videos. Any input regarding the K-70, or the issues I'm having with my K-50, would be most appeeciated.

Wonderful video. After watching it, this is the camera I will purchase. On another note, a French lady informed me Forte is pronounced as Fort; a military location. She said think Fort as location of strength. Also, she said it bugs her to no end hearing folks say Forte as Fort-ey rather than Fort. Being as I do not speak French I must take her word of the correct pronunciation.

1000s AF points, crazy video modes, auto-everything = computer replaces user's brain. But Pentax balances such dehumanisation of technology. It preserves *essential photographic experience* much under threat today. Too much emphasis on the AF and fastest lenses degraded Nikon and Canon DSLR photographic experience to the point AF dot placeholders on top of dim and tiny viewfinders block any view. You don't use camera - camera abuses you. Viewing experience destroyed, computer replaces user's brain and you just press that big button not really knowing what you're doing. At the same time, Pentax gives user a full control over all camera settings, great viewing experience, prompts you to think and gives competent enough AF to help you in situations when you are not certain you can achieve a desired shot.

Thanks Chris (and Jordan). Great reviews - I think you strike a pretty good balance (being fair) and the humour you inject never goes amiss! The issue most reviews are always going to struggle with is one persons important feature is another's "I don't care". Yes Pentax AF would appear to behind flagship Canon and Nikon cameras, so if you are primarily an action photographer you might be best sticking with Canikon. If you are primary landscapes then Pentax is well worth a look. That said Pentax AF has definitely improved and I think is now pretty much on par with older Nikon / Canon models and I don't recall anyone saying they they were "unusable" (or "will hold you back") when they came out.

Has this 'pentax warning' thing become a trend? I see 10 times more comments putting them down or warning others about them than I see the actual 'angry pentaxians'. mr. northrup even dedicated a video talking through 3 or 4 comments only one of which was a naive fanboy, a low hanging fruit like many of mr. northrup's comment clarifications videos. he even added a condescending explanation of strawman. the others were civil questions or concerns, more misinformed than with disruptive intent. maybe the comments are getting removed before I get to see them because I just don't see this 'attack epidemic'.

I'm gonna say that I don't feel we ever discriminate against Pentax as a brand despite their tiny market share, and any thinly veiled jokes that we make at the Pentaxian's expense are in response to some very zealous and sometimes abrasive comments sent our way. It's true that many look down on the brand with ignorance and unfounded criticism. It's a sad state of affairs too as Pentax make in my opinion some of the best designed cameras in the world (which I state constantly on TCSTV). In truth Pentax suffers as a whole largely due to Pentax itself. The brand's complete lack of advertising and promotion of their products results in poor sales, and an almost complete reliance on only existing loyal Pentax users to continue to support the brand limits the cost effectiveness for third party manufacturers to continue supporting the lens mount. This is very frustrating from a retail sales environment as again we really enjoy their products and would love to see them flourish. In the end I guess I just don't agree that we are overly crappy to Pentax. Their AF is decent but not to the standard of the competition. Their video sucks. Image quality is the best. Rugged as hell. Marc Newson's design was hideous. They don't support their own cameras as a brand. We try to stick to the facts. Chris @ TCSTV

"complete lack of advertising and promotion of their products results in poor sales" - agreed. unfortunately it's a catch 22. less sales means less advertising allowance. less advertisement and placement means less sales. "we really enjoy their products and would love to see them flourish" - me too. I think they have 2 major obstacles to overcome. 1 - a brand new and advanced wireless lighting system. their old system desperately need a radio makeover. 2 - they must up the game on AF tracking. Better video would be very welcome as well. In fact many people say it's also a major obstacle. that makes it 3 then. "I just don't agree that we are overly crappy to Pentax" - I never said you were. In fact you folks have been taking them seriously longer than many others. Some of your oldest and great videos were of Pentax equipment. In fact I found this channel through the 645D video. "Marc Newson's design was hideous" - in terms of looks I personally never thought it was bad. But the ergonomics suffered quite a bit IMO. Picture quality was excellent but most people couldn't get past the aesthetics.

I am like you Chris and can not abide using a camera strap, just a damm nuisance ! I love any camera and have no penchant for any particular brand. I have had Chinon, Cosina, Olympus, Nikon, Sony, film and digital, SLR DSLR and mirrorless. I have just sold my lovely Fuji X30 and bought a mint condition Pentax K20d with a new Pentax 18-135mm, it's heavy and slower to use but that's exactly what I like, makes me think about my shot's more. I just love photography and love all your reviews for their humour and honesty, keep up the good work :)

Amazing review! You guy's always make the best reviews out there. Would love to see a review of the X-T2 production model. Perhaps with a showdown between the A6300 and the D500 for autofocus. I like my K-50. The two lenses I have both use a very fast, but very loud method of auto focus, which sometimes scares birds. But manual focus with peaking works perfectly. I'm thinking this K-70 takes over from the K-50.

On the Pixel Shift topic: You said that only the proprietary software works with images taken with Pixel Shift (time 7:40). The camera merges the 4 shots together into one DNG file, right? So if you take the mated image (DNG) and bring it into another PP software like LR, PS or other that support the 14-bit DNG format, can you complete PP with those? Why does only the Pentax proprietary software work for this? Thanks for clarifying.

A reason to buy a higher end K3 or K3II is shutter life, low end shutters (probably on the K70) go up to 20 or 30000 clicks , while the K3 will go much higher 100000 clicks and more. Not a problem for the occasional shooter, but for the enthusiast it may make a difference.
