At one point he owned almost all the Haines Hunter moulds, reincarnating many of them as abalone, dive and gamefishing boats under the Edencraft name. Ron Doyle shares his story.

Thank you so much to the captain for capturing this amazing piece of Australian boating history. I love this video and the shark cat story. I have watched that more times than would be considered healthy. These legends have made the best boats in the world. Please go right back to the start and do Haines Hunter. I would also love to see a sea devil story.

That's awesome. Guy created the business which punches out some of the best fibreglass boats in Australia, now owns a tinny! They do have their advantages...

I like these sort of videos a bit off history of the Aussie boat scene. My favourite was the shark cat Bruce Harris story.

I admire Erick. He seems like an awesome bloke, always loved his work, seems he's always up for a chat, and will always take the time regarding any questions on his old boats. Along with his iconic craftsman, which is, by the way, second to none. Also, recognising his successful achievements with producing the now famous 263L, which subsequently will be talked about in 50yrs time just like the 233 hulls are today. I'd have to disagree slightly with his comment @ 3:38 regarding the 243L hull and suggesting the extra 2ft extension on the back overcome a few of the problems in the old 243L. Well, perhaps it probably did to a certain degree, but with big horse power, any hull overpowered with overweight outboards will potentially contribute to handling problems. I have a 243L transom mount twin rig with a sensible twin 4 cylinder four strokes, 400HP combined configuration, which is ample power. I believe this gives a great weight to power ratio distribution hanging off the transom, along with trim tabs, (which are a must on any old 243L hull) and a forwad pump in/out ballast system installed in the V berth it rides like it's on rails, I can't fault it, unbelievable performance in a following sea showing its magnificent Carolina Flare. The old 243L, mine included, has a 600+HP rating, I've seen a lot, or most of the old 243L's with twin 6cyl four stroke donks hanging on the back (no pod, no trim tabs, no wonder it's out of wack). After owning one for many years, I would have to say that twin 6 cylinder, four stroke donks would potentially contribute to the performance problems Erick is probably referring in the 243L hull. 600-700 HP 6 cylinder four stroke twins is way more than John Haines ever originally intended to carry in the 243L hull. Big heavy HP with no hull performance additions like pods, twin tabs or ballast system will definitely make a 243L ride arse heavy and ride like a pig. Thats IMO anyway.

The fact that anyone can just click a button watch this is incredible ( true Aussie legends) - how you find these blokes is outstanding. In terms of best Haines hull - mate let's cut all the bullshit, we all know it's the v16R with a 140
