I wonder if my local Toyota dealership , here in England, understands how the Prime models work. I have to watch this series several times, making notes, to grasp the detail ; and I gained a degree in Physics with Electronics, back in 1961. At the moment I own a 2011 Toyota iQ 1.0 manual for running around town, and a 2005 Volvo XC70 for bigger loads. I think that I will keep these working for as long as possible.

@@johnbunyan5834 That's cool that you made notes, John. If I owned one, I would have too. Even still I'm tempted as I see it as a challenge. This car intimidates me though..even if I had every special tool at my disposal, I think it would be too mind bending during a troubleshoot. You'd be putting so MUCH faith in the wording of the shop manual, it'd be hopeless if it had glitches and misdiagnosis. And I've run into more than one shop manual that simply gave very bad advice. Interesting to hear about your Volvo. In your opinion, are Volvos worse, better or similar since Deely or is it Geely? got behind them? Thinking ICE originally..but what about if it was an EV version? I hear China has some of the best EV tech going, but that they keep the 'good' stuff for themselves. Any thoughts?👍

This is the first I've heard that the a/c system is critical to the traction battery. Lots of older cars (more than 10 years old) are driven around with non-functional a/c systems, because for many cars that old, the whole car isn't worth what an a/c repair might cost. I guess this is no longer an option with any EV or PHEV that uses the a/c system to cool the battery.

Great video AMD! Love the details. I would love if you did a simplified video from a practical standpoint. For example, let’s take heating up the cabin. If temperature outside is 40 F, what are the simple steps we would need to take to heat the cabin. For outside temps below 14 F, what are ways you could warm up the cabin, etc. this way we would know what things we would need to do for different situations.

above +20f you can use the "hold ac" button on the key fob. It acts like a 'remote start" but only runs the HVAC system. Just be sure to have all our doors closed, and leave the heat settings on when you power down. If its below 20f outside, that OEM key fob remote start function sucks. I wouldn't even bother. Below 20F just hit the defrost button, this will force the gas engine to run, which will give you useful amount of heat in the winter. Once its HOT, you can turn it off and run on just EV then as the coolant will already be HOT, and the heat pump can maintain that without burring gas. please keep in mind if you part inside, burring gas will generated harmful carbon monoxide. So use caution. Adding an aftermrket remote start is not that helpful on a R4P unless you do some pretty wild stuff with that install. The two big issues are it too runs the weak heat pump, and it wont work AT ALL if plugged in,

@@careytreesh4583 Do you mean won't work at all if an engine 'block heater' is plugged in? I'm a huge fan of block heaters. Use them on my ICE only car for anywhere from 30 min to 3 hr if -35Feh. This was a very illuminating video. I was feeling quite skeptical about owning a Prime, but the deal-breaker was if you catch a rock and spring a freon leak, there isn't even a limp-home mode. You just bought real estate on the shoulder.🙁

If your thinking about adding a big car stereo sub system, think again. You only get 125 amps on the 12v side. Most of that is already in use. Adding more load puts more stress on the power converter which is a very expensive part that might have its warranty void if YOU overload it. Power inverters (the kind that output 120vac) demand MASSIVE amps off thee 12 volt system. 300 watts at 120vac is 30 amps off the 12 volt side. 1000 watts is 100 amps. 1500 watts is 150 amps. I think the fuse will pop at 125 amps directly off the battery posts. I ran into 12v car battery charging issues quickly when I tried to pull too much juice in ready mode.

AMD, here is a nightmare scenario for you,lol! Tomorrow you go into work and your first job is a Rav4 Prime with a leak in the HVAC system. You have to track the leak down. Hope your employer has a lot of leak detect dye and you have the patience of a saint! Its difficult enough to find a leak in a normal auto AC, can not imagine what it would be like to find a small leak in this system. The engineers that designed that system should be required to repair them.

Thanks for all of the videos-Learning a lot, just got a RAV4 Prime and its an awesome car. Does the battery still cool if I don't use the AC in the summer? I generally don't use AC until about 92F degrees (keep window down under 92F) and even then its set to 79F. Is this still OK with the Prime or should I start using AC at lower temps. Have no problem using heat in the winter (and part of spring/fall in NJ) as I prefer warmer weather to cooler.

After waiting 11.5 months, my 2022 RAV4 Prime finally arrived on October 16, 2022. It's a great car, and I like it very much. But ... I live in Wisconsin, and figuring out how to heat the cabin has me frustrated. I understand that the heat pump doesn't function below 14 degrees F., but the whole system doesn't seem to function consistently, and I'm not sure how the various EV-HV-Eco settings affect its operation. Sometimes the system steams up the windows, and sometimes it doesn't. I'm going to keep on experimenting to see if I can get it figured out. This video helped a little, so thanks for trying to simplify a very complex system. I'm sure you know that Freon is banned in the U.S., so I assume you're using the brand name generically for whatever refrigerant fills the RAV4's tubes.

I understand how a heat pump works, and understood a lot of the general concepts discussed here, but the diagrams are not well drawn and are confusing. An example is the diragram at the 8:20 point it shows coolant flowing into the battery at upper and lower lines. I would expect one to be input and one to be output (even if flow is reversible it should be in one direction at one time) - the diagram does not make sense. There are also many cases where the coolant appears to be allowed to flow in more than one path at the same time. This may well be the case, but there is no explanation how this works for the system heat transfer. While most of The Car Care Nut videos are very good, I found that this one did little to explain how this system works.

Good video. I am sure it could be clarified a bit in rev2. I would start with the goals as you did but build that a bit so the audience knows that battery cooling changed from strictly air cooled to refrigerant conditioned. Second, while the Prius Prime video described the electric supplemental heating, the use of a quick abbreviation here did not help. In a similar manner I would explain that any refrigerant system does one thing - it transfers heat from one space to another. In AC mode its from the cabin to the outside. In Heat mode its from the outside to the cabin. It might be good enough to note that a heat pump system can switch directions. And advanced automotive heat pump systems work better than typical residential heat pumps because the advanced systems a) use variable capacity compressors that can run higher than 100% because b) they utilize a compressor overheating control known as hot gas bypass and c) because they utilize electronic metering devices instead of mechanical equivalents. Recently these advances have been become available in the highest end residential systems to allow full heating down to 5f. In a similar manner the advanced techniques in automotive applications provide usable heat to these very cold outside temps without relying on high wattage electric heating techniques which are obviously bad for a battery operated vehicle. Finally, understanding that a hybrid does have an engine that, when run, provides exceptional heat, requires some valves to take advantage of it. And an engine water coolant to refrigerant system heat exchanger to eliminate the extra coil inside. An interesting aside: Big buildings routinely use refrigerant to water heat exchangers in systems commonly known as chillers. Geothermal heat pumps used on buildings also use water to refrigerant heat exchangers. Where Toyota excels is when they incorporate industrial technology of twenty years ago (variable capacity heat pumps and water to refrigerant heat exchangers) into affordable and mobile automotive systems.

They seem to suck in Indiana weather! I re-engineered quite a big of the parts of the r4p to allow it to safely burn gas automatically while still plugged in via an aftermarket high quality remote start.. That burn gas while plugged in was my hack. But now I loved my r4p. The heat pump is ok on cold days if the gas burn got thing hot first. So I can still enjoy EV driving in the winter. With a 100% battery level each time too since remote starting like this uses very little EV power.

Very helpful video which made me determine to not get the Prime and stick with the regular hybrid. Regardless of how reliable the AC system might be, it sounds way too over engineered and bound to break at some point. I just don’t want an AC system issue to be a factor that prevents me from driving a car. Just seems silly to engineer it in that manner. And refilling the system every 80k miles = $$$$. Thank you for the video!. Does the system need to be topped off at 80k miles because of a shaft seal leaking on the compressor (like the old days)? Or is it just a "just in case there's a leak" checkup?

So why does the hvac system make a “clunk” sound on start-up in cool weather? I bought mine in March when it was still cold out and every morning as I drove out of the garage and turned on the heater it would make a loud clunk sound. And if you look online at forums this is a common occurrence. No such sound with the cooling side in summer.

Complex YES! Effective on cold winter days? NO! This car as the worst heater in it I have ever owned. So bad in fact I added a remote starter to it. STILL SUCKS! It defaults to the heat pump mode which is pretty much no good at outdoor temps below +20F. But I'm not the kind of guy to just accept it. I did something about it. i can now remote start my r4p and get it up to 100f cabin temp by forcing it to burn gas, even with the plug spout still inserted. i did it safely too, without hot wiring the car's safety checks for plug insertion. i know the car-care-nut is not a fan of after market remote start devices, but i have a feeling even he would approve of how I pulled it off. His videos, like this one where very helpful. Its not an easy install, or an easy fix. The car itself never sees it electronically. No computer interfaces at all. No bus tapping. No data at all. . I'm tempted to send him one to see how challenged he would be with the install being the expert he is on HPEV's. Loved your video on the xtool D7, also a great tool for this DYI project. I have a 2021 Rav-4 Prime that I love, but during the cold when you start the heat, there is a very loud vibration that rocks the car. Videos are all over the internet, but every time I went to Toyota, they used the TSB which told them to rest the HVAC system which didn't work, then the 2nd TSB stated to replace a HVAC tubing and that didn't work. They compared my RAV4 Prime to another RAV4 Prime both cars have the same issue. They told me it must be normal, I told them it's something with the heat pump when there is cold weather. In the summer it doesn't have a problem. So it's documented with Toyota and in my records so if there is a problem down the line then Toyota can if it on their dime. Any suggestion on how to fit this would be much appreciated.

I believe your battery cooling diagram may be wrong, I would think there should be a suction line return to the accumulator. From what I see your showing two liquid lines and two metering devices and no return of the boiled refrigerant. How can that be?

Hi, I have two questions please. I am considering to trade-in my 2021 RAV4 Limited to a RAV4 Prime due to increasing gas prices. Question 1: Should I do the trade-in or keep it for few years? Number 2 question: I live in Toronto, wherein we have frigid weather during winter time (may go below -25C or Winchill of -55C); and summertime (with 30C to 40C heat). My concern is with the heating or cooling the car during this frigid weathers. I hope to hear from you. Thank You.
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Honestly in frigid weather the prime doesn’t do as well as most hope. Needing heat in that kind of weather will force the engine on and kinda defeats the purpose. A hybrid might be a better option but I wouldn’t trade in your RAV4 it’s too new and you’ll loose a lot more than the cost of gas savings

Since heat is sent in the cabin by the coolant, does it mean that adding a ~600CAD "premium plug-in block heater" would allow or significantly enhance HVAC heating under 10F ?
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 3 жыл бұрын
The block heater will need continuous power to work as soon as you turn it off the heat will be consumed rapidly and not replenished. Also the system by software won’t even operate below 14 F so it would just turn on the engine to keep the heat going

@@TheCarCareNut That block heater is not a bad idea tho. If a large section of the coolant is kept hot by the heater, and the car was started quickly after it was unplugged, Id think you might get heat much faster then normal even on a mild day.
