I still like this seemingly-simple design (more than ever, in fact), yet I recall, at the time, many people complaining that this generation Prelude looked too much like a gen-2 Nissan 240SX. They also complained that the previous Prelude looked too futuristic (especially the instrument panel). People too-often don't appreciate a good thing until it's too late.

My first new car was a 2001 Prelude SE 5MT, leather, no mods, which I have to this day. 280,000 km driving the hell out of it, and it's been the most reliable car ever (replaced the clutch, brakes and alternator, that's it). The styling never grew old on me, in part because there wasn't an updated replacement for it, so I knew it was a keeper.

The other only quietest engine around that time was the Lexus LS400 (TV commercial in 1989).

I’ve owned one of these for a long time. They’re really something special. There’s some kind of intangible factor that I haven’t felt in many other cars, including a lot of them that people consider better. I’d start looking for manual swap parts sooner rather than later, though. The automatic transmissions are well-known to fail frequently on these, though 2001s had the least issues.

@spicytuna62
@spicytuna62 Жыл бұрын
I have one of these, and I love it. It's very simple and understated and conservative in its design language. It doesn't make big power. It doesn't appear large. And yet, driving it is such a wonderful experience. It's hard to be mad driving this car. I don't drive my Prelude to run errands around town. I run errands around town to drive my Prelude. I look for reasons to get to drive it. Every moment I get to spend behind the driver's seat of this car is a joyous occasion. If I didn't buy a Prelude, I probably would have bought a Toyota 86 as my fun car. The 86 is a cool little car, also revs to just over 7k, and (being a Toyota) is very reliable. But what I love about old Hondas is the dramatic VTEC sound. Once this car gets just over 5,000 RPM, those larger valves kick open and the car gets dramatically louder. It's _really_ stupid, but it makes you feel like a little kid. The Toyotas don't do that. Too many modern cars are just huge, they sit like a small truck, and they make huge horsepower. I'll declare that the correct number of horsepower is somewhere between 180 and 250, depending on weight. I'll even go to 300 for a heavier full-size sedan or crossover. For a small car like this, 200-220 is more than enough power to have some fun. The short gearing also makes these cars great to rip on because you can be at the top of 2nd or 3rd and barely speeding. This car has the right amount of power to be fast enough to be fun, but not so fast that you're in trouble with the law all the time. But also powerful enough to just cruise along at 45 or 50 in regular traffic. This car is an awesome daily driver. On the third brake light situation, all base models (like the one shown here) came with an interior third brake light. All Type SH models had no interior brake light because the spoiler, which contains a third brake light, was standard equipment on that trim. The spoiler was optional for base models and so they all have the interior light, even if the car has a spoiler. I once read someone compare the seat material to a beach towel, and I've never forgiven them for saying something so mean, and yet so true. They don't breathe on a hot day _at all._ Another quirk I'll point out about these - I don't know if the S2000 does it, but the cruise control unit physically moves the gas pedal. If you set the cruise and stick your foot under the pedal and lift, the car will slow down, and the computer will make up for it by giving it more gas and moving the gas pedal itself down. It seems really archaic to hire a bunch of Smurfs to push the gas pedal when the car needs more gas, but hey, if it works, it works.

@Donald Burton boy a 2nd Gen Prelude with 480,000 MILES on it has to be the highest mileage Prelude in the world if not one of the highest ones. I almost bought a 1986 Prelude 5 speed supreme grey metallic with 377,000 km (234,000 miles) but I heard that these A-series of Honda engines weren’t the most durable Honda engines ever made, people hated working on the dual carb systems, they said it was the worst design they ever experienced. Did you ever had to mess around with the dual side-draft carburetors on yours. Most of the Prelude & Accord 80’s A22H1 engines would blow up between 250-300K miles. At least from all the ones I’ve seen on Craigslist. Now if you did 90% or more highway driving in your 83 Prelude then maybe I could see it hitting that over a 2 decade period maybe. But how many years old was your 83 Prelude when it hit 480K? Just wondering because that’s a common mileage achievement in a D or B series Honda engine but not an A-Series Honda engine.

My first and only prelude I own now that I bought from the original owner/older lady. One of my favorite Hondas out of the few I’ve owned. 5 speed, all stock. I leave it that way, I take care of it and it takes care of me. Such a simple car but yet so cool. People all ages love it. Even though I’m tired of the power it makes compared to todays standards.. hard for me to get rid of it, I know I would regret that decision instantly. Even with the miles I put on it, seems like the value just slowly goes up the more rare these get.

I know you probably don't want to do anything to that prelude as far as modify it trust me I've had a 1995 Civic EX coupe that I have owned for well over 20 years and also a very very rare addition 2004 Honda Accord V6 6 speed coupe with the very very very rare hfp Honda factory performance package seats lowered suspension from the factory with only 60k original miles both of my cars for one owner vehicles BUT LET ME SAY THIS... I understand the not wanting to modify it and keep it original but with today's standards and getting bored of it I highly suggest doing some simple mods man just do a quality not cheap quality cold air intake AEM is a good one for preludes a quality header and quality cat back exhaust if you want to go a little farther do an exedy stage one or two clutch and lightened flywheel and I promise you it will be like that car is brand new all over again and feel much quicker to you even with those simple mods!! Got a buddy of mine that has a 2001 prelude type sh and he got his from the original owner as well with only 70,000 miles on it keeps it in pristine condition but just like you he eventually got a little bored of its performance and wanted to spice it up a little bit and did those same few mods I listed but tastefully and quality versions of them and I'm telling you it woke that car up significantly by letting it breathe better and made it darn quick too!! That car would beat the mustang GT's of the time the 98 to 04 GT's and even the 05-10 editions with similar mods those age 22s are quick and again I understand wanting to leave it original but just giving it some better breather mods will severely wake that car up And at any point in time you can choose to go back to stock and take all of those pieces off and put it back to original... Trust me I did all of those mods on my 95 Civic EX D16Z6 and my 04 Accord V6 6 speed the Civic even has a fully built engine with high compression Pistons rods Ferrera flat face high comp valves springs retainers stage 3 cam bigger intake manifold and throttle body by skunk2 Dyno tuned on hondata pushing almost 200hp at the wheels that's damn good out of a d series aohc to push b h and k series HP The V6 Accord with full bull times and similar mods is making 320 HP at the wheels tuned on the Dyno with Hondata Sorry for the long comment man you don't have to go as far as me but like I said just quality set of intake header exhaust better clutch and light and flywheel and at any point in time you can take it off and go back to stock if you choose to I would suggest doing that before ever getting bored and selling it it's not for everyone but just a thought

The most fun to drive, reliable, well built car I've ever owned. 4 Wheel disc brakes, 4 wheel independent suspension (no, I didn't have the 4 wheel steering model unfortunately) made the car well ahead of it's time. I bought a 2000 model brand new after wrecking my 94 accord in a street race when I was 22. I still have it today with 164000 miles. Had to replace the transmission around 130000 miles, but other than that, I haven't had any other issues with it. I have purchased and sold 3 other vehicles since. I don't see myself getting rid of it anytime soon

This is the best Honda Toyota Lexus channel period, who wouldn't get enthusiastic? 👍 Honda engines rotated backwards in the old days which is indeed unusual. Caused wheel hop under hard launch which had to be countered with stiffer engine mounts. Begin 90s the reaction rods and subframe were changed from the front of the car to be integrated with the steering rack, it improved handling so much!

Yes AMD, Less is more when it comes to car design. The simplicity of this Prelude's design also provides excellent visibility which is increasingly rare today. Today's over-styled sedans are more 'swoopy' than this sports car. 🤨

@@davewilson7602 Yes, the latest wave of Honda models are refreshingly reserved in their appearance. Their CUVs are also very spacious compared to those from their arch enemy Toyota. Having said that, I don't think they are currently matching TMC on the reliability front as they did for decades.

Oh great idea. Except bringing it back would mean a twice as heavy car with 69 computers and a price tag of 45k. That model prelude is so awesome. It was car, body, performance, sensibility balanced in the most respectable and impressive way.

The Prelude had a base price of $23,000 in 2001 dollars, almost $40,000 in 2023 dollars. 45k isn’t that far off from reality.

This is back when Honda interiors were simplistic with with well laid out controls. Low dash, low belt line and big windows made Hondas feel roomier than they actually were.

I haven't personally been in any new Hondas. But I thought they got the message and have some really good layouts now. I think the last gen Civic launch with touch screen controls and everybody hated it so the brought back physically controls. I have heard nothing but praise for all their new models interiors. The only criticism I would have is that they are making every model have the same interior. It's a good interior. But kinda sad that no model will be allowed to stand out.

Love this style Prelude. I think the rear spoiler was added since the rear deck 3rd brake light would’ve been deleted if the spoiler was ordered or installed at the factory. Too bad it’s an automatic. I’ve heard the Honda manuals were great.
@interstate366
@interstate366 Жыл бұрын
The only one that didn’t have the 3rd brake light in the rear deck was the Type SH. If you got a non-SH, regardless of transmission, or spoiler choice, it would have a 3rd brake light in the rear deck. The spoiler was available with or without the 3rd brake light in it. I’m not sure what the difference is, maybe the ones with the brake light in it were added at the dealer while the ones without it came that way from the factory. You’re right about the transmission though. The manual is better on its own, but the automatic on this car is notorious for failing a lot. The 99-01 weren’t as bad as the 97-98, but I still wouldn’t buy an automatic one of these unless I had a manual swap planned in the very near future.

I had a '91 Honda Prelude, that car had a soul. It wasn't fast and just handled ok, but it never broke down for 150k and unfortunately I was a flat broke college student who never maintained it and the timing belt broke and destroyed the engine. I'll never forget that car and when I (rarely) see one on the road I get the nostalgic feels for those simpler days.
