New viewer here and I didn’t know which video to comment on to say how I’m really enjoying these vids ( so I chose this one randomly ). Like you I love having a go at things but that means having a lot of tools, fixings and sundries at your disposal which sometimes late on a Sunday evening halfway through a job can be frustrating not to have thus having to improvise or patiently wait until the stores open the following day.....keep up the good work and thanks for some great honest vids that include the downs as well as the ups to diy

I think you did a great job. You figured all of your measurements out and made adjustments and it came out great. Possibly like someone else said either put some trim around the top and sides of the fireplace or a bead of caulk around the same area. Overall A+

Great job as always!! I have a multi tool like that, I love it!!!!!! With the correct attachment you can use it on near about anything. You could have used it to cut the wood for your bracket also. I literally use mine for everything!!! As far as that gap I would just use caulk for such a small gap. And then just paint it to match.

Thanks for the tip! I wondered about using it for that! Oh well, if someone watches it and has minimal tools, then hopefully it'll help them 😀

Another great video 👍🏼 I'd caulk around it and paint with wall colour! And keep the off cut of skirting! You don't know how many people have asked me to make them matching pieces when they have removed or replaced the fire! It's near impossible to find a match!

Thanks! Another great tip painting the caulking. And too late... skirting's now in the bin 😣

The Carpenter's Daughter Oh well I'll expect a call from you in about 5-10 years asking if I can make you a piece of skirting to match in 😂
@safrazhamid47844 жыл бұрын
I'd use white rubber seal tape (draught excluding seal) all around the edges at the back. You're a brave girl cutting the skirting, I'm lazy and would have used a profile gauge to notch the fireplace to the contour of the skirting. Great channel 👏 keep up the good work

If you want the fire to be removable then try some white self adhesive neoprene draft excluder. It should allow a certain tolerance with a bumpy wall and can easily it removed if you think it looks rubbish. I used some on the bottom of plinths in my kitchen against riven tiles and it gave a nice sharp line. Good job BTW now go and have a play with the sliding miter saw, they are fun ... and scary.

some shims under the front of the box would help close the gap on the top/rear. they can be placed far enough back to where you can't see them. and with it being on carpet, that will help hide the small gap that is created under the front of the box. then, you can take some white silicone to fill in the smaller gap at the top/rear. using silicone )or caulk, for that matter) won't make it permanent as it's easy to remove if you ever need to remove the box. also, using trim IS another good idea. it can be cut to be flush with the wall, but be attached to the box, itself, so nothing is nailed into the wall. BUT, nailing it into both the box AND the wall would help make it a bit more sturdy; as long as when you nail it into the wall you hit solid wood and not just wallboard/plaster (not sure what your walls are made of). and those wall clips were a cool idea. i'm like you and don't like any brackets showing if i can help it. it just makes for a much cleaner look. that's why i'm converting all my current shelves to floating shelves. good job on this one, though. everything looks to be coming along nicely.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm not sure shims would work as it's the top back area where the chimney sticks out.
@maxximumb6 жыл бұрын
Nip to Ikea and grab a Lack floating shelf. Glue and screw to the top to make a mantle and that will disguise the top gap and give you a usable size space for ornaments. Then run a bit of caulking down the sides if the remaining gap still bothers you. When wiping the excess caulking off with your damp finger, press hard and leave a slight depression in the caulking. Then you can paint the caulking the same colour as the wall and you preserve the nice clean and straight edge of the fireplace surround. How did you hide / disguise the wire to plug it in?? Great job on fitting the fire. Looks tres smart.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The plug is through an exciting hole in the left side of the chimney breast where there's a socket.

I remember reading elsewhere that you'd like to keep this removeable, which rules out the use of silicone. I'd be tempted to try and hide the gap, if it was me. One thought would be to stick a large shelf on top; overhanging on three sides and butted to the wall. It would have to be manufactured board, as wood needs to move. I think a small trim may look to obvious along the top. Maybe it would work better down the sides? Just my thoughts. :-) Good to see the mallet in use again. ;-) Nice to see you using the multitool and getting support from companies.

Mark around and cut to fit, only cut straight lines or long curves to bring the edges closer the general contour of the wall. Mask/tape off the contour on the wall, set the mantle with a thin line of kit between it and the wall. Wait until dry. Remove mantle. Remove tape. Install snugly. You now have a perfectly fitting mantle with zero clearance.

Nice work as always, but I would have attached trim to the fireplace at an angle to account for the mm gap on the crooked wall. (I hate it when construction workers don't use a plumb bob for walls to get them level with the flooring) Then I would have used 2 cleats with a 45 degree angle one long side. Placed on the wall with the 45 degree cut facing up on the wall with the highest part away from the wall. Then braced the other one with the 45 degree angle on the fireplace facing down and the long edge close to the wall so they fit like a sandwich. Then slowly lowered the fireplace onto the wall cut brace. I used this hanging technique for many props I used in Hollywood sets. It's cool because it's so easy to come apart if changes are needed or production is finished. Thanks as always and sad this wasn't done in the garage. lol

Hi, You could scribe the top of the fire place to the wall or use decorators caulk to fill the gap. When you watch the video of the multi tool cutting you can see the skirting is vibrating as its not fixed to the wall. This means that the blade is not cutting on every pass as it is effectively just pushing the skirting backwards and forwards. DONT DO THIS but you can touch the moving blade to your skin. As your skin moves easily the blade has great difficulty cutting. Thats why they use a similar tool to remove plaster casts. Any hoo. I would force my pry bar, a cats paw is a must for every tool box, or some small wooden wedges, another tool box must have, behind the skirting making it rigid and allowing the multitool blade to be 100% efficient by cutting on every stroke. One day you will be cutting into a door lining or skirting and the blade will stop cutting. It will be a hidden nail vibrating under the blade, and as its vibrating not even a metal blade will cut it however hard you try. And drink more water, if you are thirsty its to late.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! Of course!!Scribing the top dead centre looks like it is the perfect solution! 😁 Will probably need to make new brackets after for correct size, or add shims perhaps 😀
@trig6 жыл бұрын
When scribing angle the saw blade so it undercuts the material, then when you come to fine tune the scribe with sand paper you will have way less material to remove. I would be tempted to revisit using traditional french cleats. they are much stronger but most of all the two angles coming together will draw the fire place tight against the wall leaving a near perfect joint.
@RD-RD-666 жыл бұрын

I'm with Sean, and would shim the bottom of the box, the front of it that is, thus raising it slightly on an angle so it gently closes the gap. The carpet takes care of the gap at the bottom of the fireplace.

Well done. Instead of fitting trim to the wall, consider fitting a custom spacer to the electric fire. This way you don't damage the wall and you get the gap closed. If you use artificial wood (made from plastic) like Royal Wood, PermaTrim, Synboard, TrimTec, and CELTEC, and others it will have color throughout.

Mask off the wall and the fireplace all around (leave between 3-5 mm between the maskingtapes on the wall and the fireplace), and caulk it with acrylic latex caulking. Smooth it out with your finger or with the kind of silicone tool made for this purpose, and then remove the tape before it starts to dry. No need for paining it afterwords either. Hi, ive watched a few of your videos now and just wanted to say how great they are :) Not being rude at all but you should watch some videos on using a multi tool as you can pick up a lot of stuff that makes it work much better for example when your cutting if you rock the tool side to side it helps keep the blade clean (allows the dust to be removed from the teeth of the blade) allowing it to cut faster and easier. also on your camper van you really should remove that bonnet bra, they are really bad for the paint work as they can hold moisture between the bra and paint causing rust issues etc but if you like the look of it etc your best bet is to take it off every now and then to allow the bra to dry out and the surface underneath it to dry.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's probably about time to take the bonnet bra off and check it! And hopefully I'll find a comprehensive video on my multi tool very soon! I had a look before filming, but didn't find anything good quick enough before doing this job 😔

Great job. The lip of the cleat looked a little thin though and I'd worry it could snap off if someone lent too hard on the fireplace. I'd be tempted to screw some metal plate to the back of the cleat to reinforce the lip that sticks up from snapping off. HTH
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK6 жыл бұрын
I was worried about that before cutting, but with it being structural timber, it's so strong. There was no give when I tried to bend it with my hands. Plus all the weight is on the floor.
@neilsumner19296 жыл бұрын
Ah Ok then. I wouldn't bother filling the gap behind it looks barely noticeable on camera, you'd soon forget its there. Any attempt you make to fill the gap will make it harder to remove the fireplace for future maintenance. I assume you wanted the fire removable for maintenance purposes only? If you wish to fully remove the fire in the future then I would have cut the back of the fire instead of cutting the skirting so the skirting remains intact. Saves repairing it later.

I probably would have used some of these concealed hangers for the fire surround. They might have perhaps pulled the fire closer to the wall and giving ultimately a stronger removable fix: firesandsurrounds.co.uk/products/fitting-kit The metal fixings supplied with your existing fire from what I know are mean to be sunken into the wall and then skimmed for filled over to make good. As for the gap, it really depends on how large the gap is. For some it won't bother them but for others you can get a draught that comes from this gap. You can just caulk it with something flexible or use something like a joint back rod which will bridge the gap and draught. They come in different colours and you can leave them wedged in or then fill over the top. If there was a gap that did not need to be there then it would bother me, as I would feel I had not finished the job properly and I would know it was there......but it is each to their own. Both the above are as cheap as chips.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm tempted to scribe the Top back because it bugs me, but that attachment looks perfect!
@actiongirl56 жыл бұрын
Yeah it seems like the concealed hangers provide a really good option to the problem you had with your fire. I suppose it depends like I said how large the gap is, under 2mm I probably wouldn't make the effort and for that small gap I would just caulk it with something flexible. Over the 2mm but under 5mm I would maybe give the joint backer rod ago with some flexible caulk. The thought of scribing the fire surround makes me feel personally a bit uneasy, because you only have gaps at either end of the surround and not in the middle. That could ultimately looks a lot worse that even leaving it. You have a coloured wall which does make the fire with it's white surround pop, so should the scribing not work out it may be more apparent than you think. You could go with a trim but to make it look part of the fire surround it would have to go all around the surround and not just start from the top of the skirting board....because then it would look odd. Also the introduction of the trim would detract from the modern feel your fire has and end up with it looking a bit mismatched, unless the trim was boxy and in keeping with the style of the fire. I suppose as the fire is removable you could leave it in situ and see how you feel about and if it still bothers later on it could be something worth looking at....your hubby's advice of leaving it alone might be the best option after all.....but don't tell him that! lol I can safely say in the video the gap really is not that noticeable and I would not have picked it out unless you had not mentioned it in the video.
@guffermeister Жыл бұрын
Old thread, yes, but I've just ordered some of these fixings for my surround project. will let you know how I get on with them. Not cheap for what they are but easier than having to mess about making bits. Also, with 2 pairs, I should be able to use one of those pairs lower down on either side of the uprights to keep them tight to the wall as well

I think it's fine from what we see here, but in real life if it was unsightly I'd consider something like 13mm uPVC Quadrant glued to the wooded surround. Use superglue...its easy to work with and it flexes, and it doesn't need painting.

Yeah, I want to see how I feel when the furniture's in place, but tempted to caulk it!

I'd run a bead of decorators caulk around the edge

What about the wiring?.

I wish I'd talked about this now. There's a hole on the left near a plug socket which we poked the cable and plug through

Tracing the profile of the uneven wall to your trim boards is the best way to get the desired results. Called scribing. Check out This Old House for videos on how to do it. Be careful, very addictive videos end up spending hours watching instead of working. Keep up the great videos.

Silicone caulk the gap. Hides the crimes in fit, same thing you do for trim and “skirt board” toe kicks.
