Edit: The original creator has been hired on by GW to continue the project and contribute to others. As such the originals are no longer available on KZbin, the project is now on Warhammer Community. Links have been updated. I'm not sure how this news will affect the future of the project, but I find myself feeling pessimistic. I hope I am wrong. Either way, this video will remain up as long as I am allowed to and I have added a mega link for this edit, sans the first intro text, at the bottom of this comment and the description. Edit2: GW in their infinite wisdom has decided the world needs yet another streaming platform, so any future projects will now only be available on Warhammer+. Needless to say, this is a disappointing turn of events. Putting the content exclusively on their own, much less popular, website was bad enough. This video itself has garnered nearly 300,000 additional views since that move. That's free publicity they would deny their artists in order to greedily sell exclusivity. To then put the content behind yet another barrier, this one now monetary and a recurring subscription, and expect anyone to sign up for it is foolish greed and I don't see many people doing it. If they do it will be in support of the artist, but I fear as always in the end they will be the ones to get the short end of the stick. Edit3: www.belloflostsouls.net/2021/07/games-workshop-clamping-down-on-fan-animations.html Tl;Dr: Games Workshop bought up most of the the creators of the most popular fanmade animation projects, put their future work behind a subscription paywall, and has now made a policy making fanmade animation projects IP infringement. Agreed. This was the turning point at which I became interested in WH40K. The first few times I've found it, first time was when it was mentioned by Isaac Arthur, second when I found out they're basically top sci-fi army here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fISqnWCHqK-Mjs0. Both times I left uninterested. I thought the character art looked funny / clumsy, I thought they'd intentionally bee lined it to OP status among sci-fi armies, the inclusion of magic, orks especially, had me thinking it was more fantasy than sci-fi, and the 'Status Quo' Dystopia (goal being to maintain things as they are if at all possible rather than to improve the situation) didn't interest me at the time. This changed that. I was still unappreciative of it my first view, but I was impressed, and had a few questions, so I went to see a lore explanation of this... and came away absolutely Stunned at the amount of thought that goes into Every little detail. This launched me down the WH40K animations Rabbit Hole along with more Lore. I still wouldn't say I understand enough of the WH40K universe to consider myself a fan yet, but it's certainly caught my attention.

I have played the Space Marines since the late 90s, but I never truly "got them" until I watched Astartes. The thing made clear here that no other 40k media captured before is a Space Marine is a monster from the perspective of a human. The scene that made it all click was the instant the psycher's hold on him is broken, immediately the knife is on it's way to his neck. He wasn't struggling to break free, he was single-mindedly trying to kill the psycher the whole time. Just singularly amazing visual story telling. Added so much more to my appreciation and understanding of the universe of 40k. Too bad we won't get any more fan projects like this.
@coreytroutman58823 ай бұрын
Didn't see anyone mention this yet, but at the end of the video there are actually 4 flashes as the other 4 marines appear in the scene. 3 of the arrivals are on top of those distant pillars, but the very first flash happens *behind* the one on the far right at ground level. All five marines survived their trip through the warp, but that first one might have to dig himself out of the sand.

I see a lot of people praising the animation. But can we talk about the sound effect tho? It's very on point. The muffled explosion in space (I know you got no sound in space, it's only for the sake of the animation). The sound of bullet hitting the armor, the sound of barrier and psychic activating, footstep's, heck he even knew to make conversation muffled so it build up the tense. All and all, this guy not only a genius in animation but also in sound effect.
@Anschlagen3 жыл бұрын
The ship is pressurised, just FYI. The first bit with the landing craft only has sound from the view of the ship we are following, some very muffled explosions, but that would be the gasses from said explosion hitting the ship. No sound in space is a bit of a tricky thing. Sound doesn't travel in space, but an explosion would blast gass and debrid to anything nearby.

@@Anschlagen Thank you, I was just about to comment this; a lot of people don't realise sound is essentially just matter vibrating. One thing I like is that the perspective is resolutely outside the armour. You can tell in some instances (the coordinated attack on the Chaos sorcerers, the scene with the Inquisition psyker) that communication *happens*, but it remains contained within the armour. To outsiders, the Astartes look like they operate by telepathy or some sort of gestalt intelligence, and it makes them that much scarier. Yes, I realise that was most likely driven by a lack of voice talent, but that only makes it *more* impressive. The creator took a real lack and turned it into a strength of the end product.

I'm a complete newb when it comes to anything WH, but regarding #1 I think someone else broke it down and said they do talk, it's just that no one on the outside can hear (aka they have comms built inside their helmet or whatnot). This is also why it was concerning when the guy using the beads got possessed. The higher rank guys were alarmed when he could be heard outside his helmet, meaning he was screaming so loud that sound was escaping through, also then evidenced by illuminating his screaming face in horror through the visor. I'm actually curious, so if that guy got it wrong I'd like to know if the other guy was making that ish up, and the marines don't actually communicate.

I really like that the Space Marines NEVER talk in this. It makes them seem even more badass. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a Chapter Master or someone like that giving a pre-battle speech about glory and The EMPEROR and getting them all hyped - but then once they're on the mission, they're just so synced up and all know their roles so well that they don't have to say anything. They just kill shit.
@InCognito-vx8gi3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure they do talk, you can hear the helm vox of the marines a few times. The vid just gives us an external view on them, like their enemies see them, and unless a marine activates his vox caster, they appear nearly silent, which is even more impressive considering their size and their huge armor.
@stuartsmith16513 жыл бұрын
@@InCognito-vx8gi That's a great point! We're outside observers in this, so we wouldn't hear anything they said unless they were using a caster/speaker. So even if they were talking to each other, like you said - no one facing them would know it. Which I think makes them even scarier as an enemy!
@deepblue18463 жыл бұрын
I've always thought that concept is dumb considering astartes are in a constant state of "hyped" for battle lol Most of the CG movies I see of astartes are ruined for me by the voice acting or writing. Astartes use words the same way they use bolter shells.. Not a single one is released without a purpose.. Wasting time speaking information that is not useful or have purpose is not something an Astartes wouldnt do. I think under very rare instances should we here them speak and it should be very mechanical, emotionless and to the point. I yield a little more in the novels when it comes to this because I can put my own spin on how they say it etc but in videos hearing someone else voice act their words.. cringe..
@stuartsmith16513 жыл бұрын
@@deepblue1846 You mean you don't like it when they yell, "BROTHERS!!"...? Haha. I understand what you mean, though, and I agree. I like to think of it as - there's a job for everyone. There are probably guys who talk more, because their role demands it (leaders, basically), but I figure the troops on the ground wouldn't typically NEED to talk much at all, like you said. They've got helmets with a HUD full of sensor displays, maps, all that shit - so they probably know where everyone is and what they're doing at almost all times. So unless something's really gone awry on the mission, why bother? And even if they HAD to talk to each other, like In Cognito said, only they would hear it. Which again, to an outside observer, makes them scary as hell. Regardless of what happens, all you would see is them just silently changing tactics as necessary, and continuing the fight.

That psyker was so incredibly powerful. Not only could he peer into the minds of those psychic orb creatures, but he resisted being possessed by the caged one long enough to hold himself in place, disconnect his “harness” tying him to the orb so the creature couldn’t escape back to it, but also to scream “RECALL THEM IMMEDIATELY” loud enough for it to be audible thru his helmet and warn the chapter master of the danger to his men. He did his duty to the last, and only in death did his duty end. Given a merciful end by the chapter master and his captain. His strength and actions saved the Chapter's ship, and the lives of everyone on board. A possessed psyker is a thing of absolute terror. Truly, even the chapter master and his captain were in extreme danger as they assessed the situation. That’s why the master waved away his third, to hold the next line in case they failed in containment. The scream is most likely the death rattle of the psyker’s soul barely hanging on to coherency before being torn apart by the orb creature’s psychic powers. And before it’s even over the chapter master has hands on him and ends him mercifully swiftly, with the captain making sure all vital parts are destroyed to prevent even the slightest chance of a possession. I like to imagine the inquisitor psyker and the chapter master were associates, and they expected each other to do their duty. That confidence, the anchor that psyker had to “the chapter master must be warned, and he will do his duty freeing me from a possession” is why that psyker was able to push himself until his soul literally burned away inside of him.

Something I love about this is that they perfectly portray just how powerful space Marines and psykers are. In the game and such they're pretty much everywhere and die pretty often so you don't really grasp the concept of just how godlike they are. Space Marines are designed to be one man armies against normal foes they're pretty much unstoppable and this perfectly betrays it. A small squad is enough to decimate dozens if not hundreds of standard combatant soldiers, a standard space Marine is virtually bulletproof to normal weaponry and even most heavy weapons are rendered useless. Simultaneously they can run at superhuman speeds despite their heavy armor and can rip apart steel with their bare hands. Meanwhile this also shows you the power of psykers, you think that these are something special like powerful bosses but they are just standard psykers all of them have that power and you can see what they're capable of. It just really sells the weight of what kind of monsters exist in this universe

The detail I love the most is how the multi-laser gunner could've taken out the lead astartes, were he to wait just a few seconds longer. The routing troops were clearly luring the enemy into that chokepoint of a corridor; if the guy let the marine reach at least halfway in, he would not only spare his comrades, but also keep the enemy under direct fire for a few more precious seconds. That many las-blast hits would've compromised the armour's integrity, even wound the astartes with enough hits to the eyelenses and joint seals. But the gunner panicked, opened fire immediatley upon sight and that was it for everyone. Not that taking out one of the five would accomplish much, maybe it'd cost them another casualty in the fight with psyker brothers, but they still reach the artefact and place the beacons. The mortal troops were clearly professional soldiers, but in the end they were still only human. I love proper 40k so damn much. Fuck GW.

@@ernimuja6991 He does just that, but bolt pistol rounds do not work, so he throws a smoke/flash grenade, causing the enemy gunner to stop the torrent of las-blasts, takes cover, switches weapons and shoots a plasma blast. Plasma weaponry is delicate, if tried to pull it out in that hail of enemy shots, it could've been struck and compromised, not to mention that he'd be under a stream of fire for the entire duration of the switch. I am not saying that the multilaser would've killed him, but it'd likely compromise the armour/deal a few minor woulds through the seals. An astartes in compromised armour is put at a huge disadvantage for the rest of the fight, as they do not have a techmarine with them to perform repairs.

I don't know whether the lore/"rules", so to speak, have changed dramatically in the last 15 or so years - and not that I disagree with you - but the only thing that I can fault about this series is that this Lascannon should have torn the Astartes in half. Lascannons were designed to cut through the armor of tanks, walkers and speeders, much less the armor of a lone space marine. But it says a lot that these guardsmen, of a sort, brought a Lascannon to a bolter fight. That's the only fault I can raise with this series and even then I realise how inconsequential it is to what is the best 40K animation ever made...

People had best start downloading this while they still can. This is all that remains of the original versions now that GW has taken down the KZbin originals and replaced it with a lower resolution version on their website that ruins the mood with idiotic audio and music changes. I don't imagine GW will let reuploads like this stick around long.

This is so lore acurate. So many places in the books they keep on describing the shock and awe of astartes yet so few movies and games have come close to actually capturing it. This is spot on. The sheer speed, precision, weight, coordination, confidence and bravery of an astartes is really awe-inspiring...

And if you see their statistics in TTRPGs like Dark Heresy, Deathwarch or even Black Crusade you'll see that you are god damn right. To slaughter an astartes you must be a high tier character, and not every career (class) or build can do it. Some high tier assassins and psykers can if they are lucky enough but the problem is if you failed at oneshot spacemarine and has no ways to restrain him or somehow wait until next turn you would be dead.
@john-paulsilke8933 жыл бұрын
The Terminator T-800 would be destroyed by a regular Astartes trooper. A T-800 could walk through the defences at the White House, (that is until the probable man portable rockets and hidden mini-guns pop out of the false pillars and colonnades). A T-800 is OP, and a common Space Marine is his boogie man.
The first 3 episodes make them look as ruthless killing machines but the last part is my favorite. Even with all their strenght the only thing they can do against the horrors of the Inmaterium is survive.

I know it is a very minor thing, But I love the complete silence of the Astartes, You don't her them bark out orders over Vox, just silence, that makes them far more intimidating in my opinion.

If they don't have their helmet "speakers" on, they could scream inside and you wouldn't hear a thing
@Gunnar0014 жыл бұрын
I feel like super-enhanced warriors with decades, if not centuries, of rigorous training and combat experience under their belts wouldn't need to say much in a typical boarding action like this. They've done it hundreds of times and know exactly what to do and how to do it as each situation arises. They only speak when something needs to be said. Space Marines screaming all the time seems pretty dumb. Very silent and extremely precise in their movements works much better and makes the most sense.

Likely more an artistic choice on the part of the filmmaker. They're speaking as needed during the operation, over the vox, we just can't hear it. For example, the captain is obviously speaking at 9:59 but we don't hear it. We, the audience, is seeing them the way those doomed heretics are: silent, merciless, and unstoppable. The ones that were stuck to the sphere may have had some words...

For some reason I just love that small moment at 8:03. They continue to walk towards this object with no stop in movement, then it proceeds to launch out a small amount of force to make itself known and active. Each of them stop for a second, staring straight ahead and then get right back to moving, not giving a damn one bit.

@@OneBiasedOpinion yes, I see it like a psych attack too. Less of a force push and more of a psychic scream. Their unflinching advance is impressive with either though. There are many points throughout the video where a normal man would definitely pause with either fear, or lost in the moment. Who knows how long that captain and the psyker have known each other. What the orbs say: *Inquisitors orb* - “Who is there?“ *Strike team orb* - “I am here, brother. We have all failed.” *Inquisitors orb* - “The Astartes deny our touch. You must return, break your seal.” *Strike team orb* - “Impossible. @@coup-de-grace Yes, I also read the explanation that since these spheres are not demons, but rather belong to the forerunners, the inquisitor's soul was torn out of his body and pulled into the same space where the Astartes ended up.
