Ghostx1977 It's mostly hygiene and respect, the proverbs and superstitions were probably added after the fact. Like ancient peoples (yes, different groups of people... peoples) didn't have refrigeration or specified cooking and handling knowledge, so people die if they eat pigs, or get trichanosis worms. So you're like "hey don't get down on the swine". And they're like "we're kinda limited here, easy to raise, tastes good... yeah we're gonna eat it". So tribal leaders can't afford to be losing people... what are they gonna do? Ding 'lightbulb' "Yeah, so I was talking to God...." "To God... Like God, God?" Yup God, and he said you guys shouldn't be eating swine... he's getting pissed." 'Murmuring in the crowd'. "Ok, soo... we talked it over and... well if God says not to do it... yeah we'll cut the swine outta our diet. ... ... I'm just saying, Marvin over there is reeally skinny already so, we're gonna have to figure something out." See seems like superstition, but that was kind of an after the fact thing. Most of these have good reasons, the sayings and stories are so people will not only follow, but also remember (we're talking 1000+ years here, so it worked) to do them.
@stephena11966 жыл бұрын
@@CyberianPrincess I was told that the not eating pork was because burnt human flesh looks and smells like pork. That it refers to the time in the Bible where God wants Abraham to sacrifice his baby. However, Abraham doesn't want to and when he sees a goat stuck in a bush he thinks, "Ah, God doesn't want us to sacrifice our first born any more, God wants us to sacrifice a goat instead." So the not eating pork is a remembrance of that.

During the Chinese dynastic times, silver chopsticks were sometimes used because it was believed they would turn black if they came in contact with poisoned food. This practice must have led to some unfortunate misunderstandings-it's now known that silver has no reaction to arsenic or cyanide, but can change color if it comes into contact with garlic, onions, or rotten eggs, all of which release hydrogen sulfide. By 500 AD, chopsticks had spread to Japan, and Korea. Early Japanese chopsticks were used strictly for religious ceremonies, and were made from one piece of bamboo joined at the top, like tweezers. Before the spread of Chinese culture, the Japanese and Koreans also eat with their hands.

As a westerner i can say that while i never knew any of these chopstick rules, i have never made any of the mistakes mentioned. I feel slightly better about my chopstick etiquette now! However i do find it strange that it would be considered gross or offensive to actually have a chopstick touch your mouth, or to come in contact with your own saliva. Most people in the west use forks/spoons, etc... and those utensils are constantly going inside of peoples mouths. Yet it has never seemed inappropriate or dirty to than put my spoon back into my soup bowl and than repeat the process. However it is good to know these things as i eat lots of oriental foods, and don't want to be completely lacking in manners at restaurants. I do wonder though if it is appropriate to bring a personal set of chopsticks to a restaurant or someones home? Or would that suggest that their chopsticks aren't good enough?
@mattheww8858 жыл бұрын
If there's a tureen of soup in the middle of the table, you're going to use a ladle to serve yourself a bowl of soup from it, right? And then you eat from your own personal bowl with a spoon. Or if there's a plate on the table with vegetables or meat on it, there'd be tongs or a serving spoon to use to put the food on your own plate. Whereas with chopsticks, you use them to take the food from the common bowls/plates directly. So if you're licking your chopsticks and then reaching out to take more food from the common plate, your saliva is gonna touch even the parts of the food that you don't grab, and someone else will have to eat it.

I still remember at 7th grade that we have an activity. We are going to use chopsticks, who gets the most peas has the highest score but they used the back of the chopsticks I keep telling my teacher but he doesn't give a F*ck! And that's why my classmates have 100+ peas picked up by doing it the wrong way >:( And that's a big NO-NO!

There's so many rules. lol. I don't care what anyone does with silverware. If I don't have a spoon, I'll eat that yogurt with a knife. If I drop my fork, depending where it landed, I'll pick it up and go right back to it. I don't care which way it faces on the table. I don't care if someone points a fork at me. Chop sticks are serious business. hahaha.

what are you talking about. In general forks go on the left and knife and spoon go on the right side. The ones that are above the plate are for dessert. The fork furthest from the plate is the appetizer, followed by salad, followed by entree.

actually forks n spoons have many rules too. it will be easier if you go to Europe to learn them
@crystalr46508 жыл бұрын
Even though there are rules for silverware, I completely ignore them. For example, there's dinner forks, salad forks, tea spoon, soup spoon, dessert spoon, salad knife, meat knife, secretly hating someone but invite them so that you can stab them knife, and butter knife I just kind of use whatever works and have never really cared.

THIS video is such a gem on chopsticks etiquette. About 95% of it I didn't know until now. But I'm just glad I learned chopsticks by being a keen observer of users who I thought were/looked refined and elegant using it. Well, except for occasionally licking a morsel or two off them, and resting them on the table perpedicular to my body. So, thanks for the lessons. Really appreciate the tutorial.

Sousuke Aizen Ghostx1977 It's mostly hygiene and respect, the proverbs and superstitions were probably added after the fact.

Apparently in Japan you can use the back of the chopsticks to pick up food from a shared bowl and in to your bowl. It is especially recommended in somewhat more fancy company, but with friends and family it doesn't matter so much.

Thank you for bringing this up, guys! I was just sitting here thinking; my first gen southern Chinese xgf specifically taught me to use the backs of the chopsticks as serving utensils, because everyone eats from the front end. Otherwise it was considered a faux-pas because it was unsanitary ... so I suspect this 'rule' might be regional

I've NEVER used the back of my chopsticks before, other than sweeping the bones/leftovers that were dropped on the table that was left by me or the people that are also eating the meal with me, but I usually do that with the towel (forgot what you call it) so I basically never use the back of my chopsticks #Chinese

The Chinese character “箸” is translated as chopsticks, which are a unique eating utensil invented by the ancient Chinese. During the Neolithic Age in 7,000 BC to 6,000 BC, ancient chopsticks were primarily made of animal bones. Today, among the various eating utensils available, chopsticks best embody Chinese cultural characteristics, becoming an important symbol of Chinese tradition. Chopsticks are representative of Chinese culture. Whenever and wherever Chinese people are they find it difficult to have a meal without chopsticks. In addition, chopsticks can be presented as a gift or function as a unique handcraft for people to distribute and express their feelings. Global Presence: According to the statistics, over 1.8 billion people use chopsticks. Chopstick culture has great significance around the world having become a common cultural marker of “the circle of Chinese food culture” which includes many other Asian countries, such as “Chopsticks Day” in Japan, “Golden Chopsticks Award” in France and the trend of “for your health, please pick up your chopsticks” in western countries.
