Timothy hay, plentiful amounts, NO alfalfa. "Dark" green lettuce is excellent source of vitamins and also keeps them hydrated. Pellets once in a while but get a vet recommended one from an exotic animal store and not just any pet shop. These are what our Kirby's vet told us and he will be 16 years old this May and is VERY healthy.

I was reading that foods they'd have in the while are some flowers of the aster family and blue puya. Do you have an opinion on the foods they would eat in the wild in Chile? The only treats I use is science select as I like their rose hip and hay treats. It's a nice option as rosehips are what they eat in the wild occationally, and getting them by themselves is sometimes hard. It's also better I feel as the rosehips make a small percent of the treats, so it's mostly hay. Dried wild flower mixes are a good treat I also feed sparingly, as long it's specifically tailored to chinchillas and not poisonous. I honestly only feed treats like once every few days as treats are kinda unnecessary really. I have no need to really train my chinchilla, and honestly have found him tame and cuddly without them. That and in the wild they wouldn't have an excess of that sort of food laying around.

I just adopted two chinchilla boys, and the breeder said oats are a good treat, but only a small pinch each. So thats what they get. He also said rasins but after they didn't react to it well I cut them out. So I just avoid things that aren't dried leaves or oats now. Dried leaves you can get in some pet shops I was told by their vet are good but like oats they only get a small pinch. They're happy and healthy and bonded to me very quickly :D

Hey! I feed my chinchilla oatmeal oats but she doesnt really eat them as much anymore. I dont give it to her everyday, but sometimes my mom puts in more than a pinch of it in her cage. Shes 6 months old, her name is Bunny. I give her oxbox treats that are cranberry and I was delighted when I saw oxbox were good! :D I also give her dried cranberries in a while. Is that all good for her? By the way, i need some help. When i open the door of her cage anytime, she does anything to jump out and try to run away. I have a feeling she either doesnt like her cage or she really likes to play. I just think, *Dont worry, atleast the cage is bigger than where she was for some months..* May you help me to stop her from running away? Oxbow and mazuri are good brands and probably the only truly clean ones (science select is good too). Try to transition her away from that, that’s not a healthy mix it has a lot of sugar and carbs :( also dried cranberries should be a no!

I had my chins for over 6 years. They were dropped off period. I was so scared of them mentally and emotionally if that makes sense. I was scared they would bite etc. I knew nothing. I had no access to the internet. I went to Walmart grabbed what I could. I spent a lot just to find out they only liked pellets hay and water. Months passed I had no way this time to Walmart babe and boo had been without food almost a full day. I knew just a few hours I was going. I found nothing in my cabinets that I felt comfortable giving except plan cheerios. I gave them 3 a piece till my ride came that evening. Now I just love my chins They love me they know who I am and they know what I’m gonna do they know when I’m leaving the room when I’m coming in the room they’re just incredible and yes I did get to research them, wawould not trade them for anything. So with all that being said I still give them 2 In the morning and two in the evening. They know them by Cheerios. I could be out of their eyesight and say Cheerios and they will come look for me they’re incredible just got to figure out the cage thing I’ve been through three or four so far and I just can’t get comfortable enough with them I’m not satisfied they are but I’m not. it is actually necessary for its survival to eat it's own poop, so that part is normal but why he is refusing his pellets, I can't tell. Is he still eating hay? Have there been changes in environment? Has his companion died or did he get a new one? Did you change his food and he simply doesn't like the pellets? The last thing I could think of is that ig you have fed him fresh grass he might have gotten parasites. But I'd say just go to the vet if it isn't a thing that lasts for a day.

Don't worry, it just started to day. I didn't feed him grass, not really any changes, but I'm pretty sure he refused to eat was because i was hand feeding him and my hands smelt REALLY bad :/. Sugary foods cause diabets in chinnys. If you do give then a piece of dry fruit, make it a papaya and a very small piece once a week or two weeks. That will not hurt them and also take them to the vet for wellness checks just like dogs and cats. Our Kirby is going to be 16 in May and goes to the vet every year and has also had an ultra sound of his heart just to stay on top of that since chinny's are prone to heart mumurs as well. Just do what your vet tells you to do and go from there. Do not go by everything you read and every video you watch because 90% of chinny owners never take them to the vet for check ups, and everyone has something different to say. To be on the safe side, talk to a vet that specializes in exotic animals and your chinny will be just fine. Lay off the alfalfa hay as well and stick with Timothy hay since alfalfa is sweeter.

I love your channel, it really irritates me the amount of misinformation out there, for instance an insurance company I was considering using lists fresh fruit and veg as a core part of a chinchilla diet. I emailed them but they never changed the info.

A lot of people say almonds are unhealthy for chins. But that's nonsense, my chinchilla have gotten a taste for almonds for over 2 years now. I've been giving him a single raw homegrown almond for almost everyday now and he's just fine. He's almost 8 years old now with no problems whatsoever.

Probably the reason why almonds are "unhealthy" for chins is that they're rich in fat and oils and chinchillas can simply get fat if they eat them too much. That's why they're recommended as treats and not as a basis of a diet. The same way you treat yourself a pizza every now and then, but don't eat it all the time (unless you do, in which case don't).

Cuteness 5 Some people say it’s okay but honestly I don’t recommend them because they have other ingredients besides wheat in there, even if you get the plain unsweetened ones. I say just the more simple a treat is (like a whole ingredient like a goji berry or barely grout) is an healthier option😌💕

I know I am one year late, but anyways. About the vegetebal and fruits: It‘s not completly true. They can eat vegtebals but you need to slowly get them used to it because they have a sensetive stomach but once they‘re used to it they can eat vegetebals everyday, fruits are the same, but the shouldn‘t be fed everyday they are just treats. The same gose for seeds. And the reason why all breedors ( that’s propably not how you spell it) say, that it is not good is because they only feed hay because it‘s cheeper and they don’t have the time to let the chin chillas get used to all this stuff so they don’t feed it because otherwise it would be bad. (I am not a native english speaker, just saying)

Well, our chinchilla ate nuts for his whole life and got 18 years old. So they can’t be that bad for them.

Solo Frazier mine is 12 and eats cashew nuts every day all his life. No health issues.

My chinchilla is 14 years old and my mum gives her pieces of cookies, nuts and almonds, and hard little bread toasts. Also the food is with that colors treats, and she is so full of energy and healthy all her life! But is better to listen to her, I mean, the owner of this video ^^

Debi Schlabach Oats are okay but I’d avoid Cheerios just because they have other ingredients in there and simple is best for chinnies💕

Kiki’s Life I wouldn’t recommend them, though they aren’t absolutely terrible for Chinchillas. It’s best to get wholesome ingredient treats 💕

Louise Pepper Two, because they are herd animals and very social. Living alone can stress them out and leave them lonely and depressed. I only have one because he can’t live with another Chinchilla but if you want more information on it, I have a video called Can Chinchillas Live Alone that should be useful😉

I dont know which treats are good for the chinchillas because every bag is different but il look for the ones that have different rodents on the bag
