You may have mentioned this in the beginning of the video and I missed it, but what do you go by to know a product is "clean"? Do you use an app? Or how do you figure that out? Because some of the products you mentioned here are not considered clean on the Yuka app.

I do not use apps because I find that they can be misleading at times and that can lead to fear-mongering. I personally think apps are best used as more of a guideline, but totally respect that you like to use them. I go with how brands identify (and do research) as well as how stores Identify items. There is no definition or set of rules on what is deemed "clean." Hopefully, that will change and there will be guidelines to make it easier for consumers in the future. What is important to remember is "clean" can mean different things to different people 💚

I gotcha. Apps can be a little hard to navigate, but I do find that the Yuka app gives explanations on why they think a certain ingredient is not clean and provide resources where they got their information. But almost EVERYTHING has some sort of preservative that isn't good for you. 😢 I guess I'm a little paranoid and don't trust companies to be honest about their products lol.

It wasn’t rude at all and is totally fair as a question! What I try to remember is most ingredients are only “toxic” at a certain percentage. Without knowing the percentage it’s hard to say what isn’t “clean” and these apps don’t know the percentage. I think the best way to navigate the “clean” world (until there are guidelines), is to look at what the stores (Sephora, credo, ulta, target…etc) categorize as clean. And what their guidelines are. You can usually find the guidelines on the websites. It makes it easy to digest and learn more about ingredients! Beauty brands aren’t trying to intentionally harm their consumers 💚

@@KCSchtz777 Hi! I personally don’t consider as “clean” most of the makeup etc.. that is labeled as such. I started getting into makeup during the pandemic, go figure, and in these last 4 years through a lot of research, and figuring out what ingredients I wanted to avoid, I am able to look at ingredients in a specific product and determine if I consider it “clean” or not. The most important aspects for me is to always check on the guidelines of the European Union when it comes to ingredients that are banned. They do a much better job in researching and testing ingredients to determine if they are harmful or not. The FDA, does pretty much nothing when it comes to banning unsafe ingredients and they only have around 20-something ingredients that are banned, versus the EU that has around 1,000+. So looking at that is my number 1 priority, the other thing is that I do not eat anything with preservatives or artificial food colors, so why would I put that on my face and mouth (and end up eating those ingredients because of lipsticks). Also, as per my nephrologist (Kidney doctor) aluminum is an ingredient that has to be avoided as it goes directly to the kidneys (even anti-perspirants here in the U.S. have a warning label that anyone with any kind of kidney issues needs to consult a doctor before use because of the aluminum included in them, so why would I wear makeup that has it? Personally, that is how I go about “clean” beauty, though it’s hard sometimes because there is temptation everywhere. At the end of the day my health is more important than any pretty makeup product and viral product, hope it helps. :)
