I had the honor and privilege of performing with Mr. Cliburn four times including a bicentennial concert before an audience or four thousand. He is (yes, is) a great artist and lives on!

I think the Russians were as captivated by his persona as by his playing. The idea of a boyish Texan from a small town, 6'5" with soulful gaze and poise at the keyboard....I think they found that irresistible.

In 1976, Maestro Cliburn autographed my LP copy of his 1958 performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1st with Kiril Kondrashin! His eyes teared up when I asked him to sign. It’s framed and in a prominent spot in my study. 🎹
