Another haul of vintage accessories! You all know I love to shop and collect vintage, so I have a whole batch of accessories to show you that I have picked up over the last few months. I have been falling for clutch handbags (...and other handbags), left and right recently, including some super fun plasticflex tile clutches!
It's a long one but there was a lot of stuff!
More from me?

And sometimes the vintage fairy blesses you and you find a legit black corde clutch in perfect condition at Goodwill for $4 right before you find a bakelite necklace for $5 at the same Goodwill during the same trip. That was a good day.

I think it depends on the item and the alterations done/for what purpose they're done. Example: my senior prom dress was a 1960's cocktail dress that I had hemmed to better suit my body/prom setting. BUT, we hemmed it in such a way that I can easily revert it back to the longer length (which is ideal now that I dress vintage and somehow still fit into it). So, I think impermanent alterations are more acceptable. It does hurt my soul when I see people hack up vintage pieces beyond repair to make them modern instead of just leaving them for someone who dresses in that era, though.

Reversible alterations are always the best option! I wish more people would take that option into consideration.

The color of the pistachio gloves is called "vert amande" in french, which means green almonds and it describes the shell of almonds at their begining, when they are light green. In 1949s american magasines it was called "almond green". That was before the ice cream came into the market with its italian gelato name

I changed the shape of the collar on an old 1950's shirt and have regretted it because it was so unique. I was young and experimental and learned my lesson. You sound very sensible in your approach as to what is acceptable. I agree with you. I would love to see how you wear the W Bros straw hat. How would you style your hair and at what angle you might place it. I think the black reptile bag would go with any era - even todays uber modern tailored clothing - could be a good match. Never apologise for following your passion if it brings you joy. More bags is OK. OK?

I think because many people move and get rid of these items I love finding them! I convert some items ( I've changed buttons) My edits are usually just jewelry too. I'm with you when it comes to clip on ear rings. Some of them feel like some kind of, ear lobe attaching, device of torture. If they aren't named items it's OK to alter for comfort. Converting things is something i do often, since I wear clip-on earring due to having very thick earlops and a bit of metal sensitivity. So I find that screw back earrings works for me. Although I agree some clip-ons hurt. I am often picky about what clip on type of backs i like due to comfort issues. I also have been known to convert a stud pair of earrings into clip-ons

The red bag is truly too beautiful to pass! It had to be done. :P I admit that I might change dresses from time to time to suit another decade.... mostly cheap stuff, though. I like the history and the story of everything I find so I try not to change them, but ultimately I buy them to enjoy them and not to sell them or keep them in a box, so I'd rather have them suit my needs.

I do hem some vintage dresses/skirts. I am 5'2" so the most flattering skirt length for me is always at the knee or above the knee. Midi dresses/skirts are just not the right style for me. I defend it because if I lived in the 50s I would probably do the same thing. ha.
@TheClosetHistorian
@TheClosetHistorian 6 жыл бұрын
Understandable! Its hard because once vintage belongs to a new owner, it should of course be fixed to suit them I suppose, but some things are irreversible and there is only so much vintage out there. But if you intend to keep things then of course they must fit you properly!

I have mixed feelings about modifying vintage? Like your example with the hemming a '50s dress WAY up also makes me cringe, but I also have basically 0 problems with otherwise tailoring the same dress? (IE adding bust or waist darts)

I suppose darts and some tailoring can be done in ways which are reversible later on, but when fabric is cut from the hem there is no going back from that!

Yes, my Saturday just got better! The black wicker bag is my fave. As for altering vintage, well...I'm for it, but that's because I'm not really a purist. These are usually unique items so it can hurt to see the irreparable 'damage'. But if the person will be happier with the piece and will hold on to it forever thanks to the alterations, then what's the harm? Nobody else can have it, anyway. That said, altering pieces that you know you're gonna get rid of seems wasteful and kinda 'unfair' to the next owner.
@TheClosetHistorian
@TheClosetHistorian 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Olga! I agree that if it's something you intend on keeping and enjoying for a long time it makes sense to customize an item to your needs! Or of course if something needs to be fixed or altered to make it wearable at all that makes sense too :)

Great haul!! I don't like skirts hemmed too short either, because it's so much prettier and authentic at the original length. But I definitely would convert clip on earrings if I could! No one's ever going to know they didn't come like that. It annoys me when people try to pass limp curling wand curls (like, not even curled under) off as vintage instead of doing a set. So I guess just when people think they look authentic to a specific time period when they clearly don't have any historical knowledge of that time. I do cheat on some things; I wear leggings in the winter and avoid nylons because they don't stay up well on me. I don't like holding my purse, so I clip on a matching nylon strap so I can wear it on my shoulder or crossbody. I'm lazy lol

Would I be done with the alteration of the clothes, it would be difficult to go "unalter" them, so I just sew new ones and leave the true vintage to people who don't have to maul the dresses. I am in favor of alterations so the things can be worn and adored again, but with the really old and special things I think it is wise to be careful with the alterations. All in all, for me the resulting look is the important part, not the kind of earring clasp :)

I prefer to sew reproductions for a similar reason, then I can choose the fit and details to suit instead of having to alter precious vintage items!

Besides plasticflex, what are other vintage brands I should look out for? I tried to Google it but that wasn't helpful. I did run into your blog tho!!

I don't know of any other particular brands really, I always just search for "plastic tile purse" and see what happens. I'll get even more vague and just search "plastic purse" or "plastic handbag" because some sellers don't really know what they have and then you get the real deals ;)

Also how do you organize all your accessories? By color or by item (ie. purses, necklaces, gloves...)?

It annoys me when people convert clip earrings because I dont have pierced ears! Lol! I refuse to pierce them after the horror stories of kids pulling on earlobes etc. I feel I should buy all the clip earrings when I see them. (But yeh, screw backs are the worst!)

Fair enough! There are luckily a gazillion clip on earrings still out there, it seems they were really a lot more popular than pierced earrings for a long long time. My solution to children pulling on anything is just to avoid children as best I can, but I understand this method does not work for everyone ;)

Could you please tell us what kind of glue you use to adhere the post backs on clip earrings? E6000?

I recently found your channel and subscribed. Binge watching your vids and have very much enjoyed all! Thank you! I do have to take exception with you altering clip or screw-back earrings! I purposely never pierced my ears and have been buying vintage for years. Do you know how hard it can be to find these? I cringed when you said you alter them!! I actually have to alter modern earrings to clip or screw-back. Aaaaccckkk!

Thank you Amy! I'm sure you are not alone in your ire, alas some people alter things to be clip ons, others alter them from clip ons, indeed we all have different ears. Funny you say you find them hard to find though, there are thousands of pairs of screw backs and clip ons available on Etsy for example. Do you not shop online?

@@TheClosetHistorian Yes, but not for jewelry. I want to inspect them at thrift or vintage local. I have been disappointed w Etsy or Ebay a few times. And these vintage ones are finite. Once gone, they are are gone.

Thank you! I wear a larger glove size myself so it may be worth searching out size 8 or 9 gloves as I do come across them sometimes online :)

I think it's ok to tailor a garment to fit your body better, but it my heat bleeds every time I see someone crop a true vintage pice really short or cut off the shoulder pad to make it more "modern".

Dear Mam These days there is so much news on Climate Change and the role of garment industry as a major greenhouse emission source. As you know a lot about fabrics , I would be highly obliged if next to each of these fabrics, you can just write if they are biodegradable and any other information on it being nature friendly fabric 1) Velvet 2).
