Our attack lacks dynamism due to Kane dropping deep and Saka and Foden constantly wanting it to feet. I've been scratching my over squad selections and tactics since Euro 92 (Keith Curle anyone?), so in that regard, nothing ever changes. But I have never known someone so devoid in passing the eye test. No recognised left back, no defensive midfield playmaker, no Anothy Gordon (our only wide left attacker), not recognising Foden is a no. 10 and perhaps he could try either or when picking Bellingham or Foden, giving next to no minutes to palmer and not developing an alternative to when Kane is injured or having an off day (he is human and we are all fallible). If you had Wharton screening the back four, you'd see more line breaking, short passes, this also frees up Rice and Foden to alternate their runs and press together. Add the defensive capabilities and athleticism of Gomez, doubling up with the rapid and confident Gordon, we'd see a better balanced England. How in hell can you be in any doubts as to your formation, playing style and role, when you've had eight years to get it right?

In the past England played the way they do now. Rigid, cautious, slow build. Here’s the thing, in the past they wanted to be front foot whereas it’s Southgate’s policy to be slow, cautious, risk averse etc. now by doing that it’s meant England generally top the group and get an easier draw in the knockouts. Whereas before, because being cautious wasn’t by design they lost silly goals and would finish second or not qualify from the group. So in that sense, Southgate is doing well. He basically guarantees latter stage knock out every time. But, England will never win a tournament playing that way, nor is it enjoyable for the fans. Let’s just stick to having a right good go and then losing to a dodgy ref or on pens, it’s much more satisfying that way.
