It's a combination of the insanely high expectations of PIxar fans, and how the first acts of this movie are just generic university movie tropes. It subverts these tropes at the end, and has a really great message and final act. It's overall a good movie, but it's just not that constant concentrated creativity and excitement all the way through, the type of movie pixar became famous for.

@@NovusIgnisno I think it was the whole trope of college stuff. I’m sure older critics were not into it because they have seen those tropes and stories dozens of times. Including underdog stories and school stories. When this came out I was about to hit collage and I was never into older collage movies but this I got really into. And yes I love the ending. It flips the script for “chase your dreams and they will come true”

For those of us with disabilities, this movie was a refreshing breath of hopefulness. Usually movies go feel-good for abled people and show someone miraculously overcoming their obstacles. This movie shows something more practical, where you live with your obstacles and find a way to live as close as possible to your dream.

exactly, like someone whos totally confined to a wheel chair is never gonna be able to be a world class hurdles racer but there's still soooo many wheelchair accessable sports that mean you can still play and be a part of a team and they could still go to the paralympics and kick ass

Dean Hardscrabble's admonition that a roar would make a child afraid of snakes cry instead of scream is a clever little reference to Boo from the original film. She was afraid of snakes - that's why Randall was the monster assigned to scare her. And when she saw Sulley roar in the simulator, she didn't scream. She cried. Also, in case it wasn't obvious, Johnny Worthington is the guy who twisted Randall around and made him a glory-obsessed jerk. This is actually expanded on in more depth in Monsters at Work.

It's also cool to note that the original movie ends with the company switching from harvesting screams to harvesting laughs, meaning Mike ends up being the new "scarer" (or "comedian," I guess) that goes into children's bedrooms. The times/culture changed, allowing Mike's unique talents to be appreciated.

I mean, Mike was talented. He was an awesome coach and was knowledgeable. He simply was chasing the wrong dream. To me, the message of this movie is more about: 1. Finding what you're really good at and working with your strengths, and 2. Persevering even when nobody else believes in you. And 3, I guess: there are other paths to reach your goal if you're humble and determined enough.

SAME. I love this premise. Achieving your dreams just isn't always realistic - but you'll find a way to feel fulfilled anyways. I'm tired of movies where the main character gets what they want at the end even when it's unbelievable and unrealistic. Sometimes I have no idea how the main character won. If the movie ended when Mike's team won the game, I wouldn't have liked this movie as much as I do. This movie made things so interesting.

Here’s a needless fun fact. I went and counted all the scream canisters that were in the room during the final adult scare. Mike and Sully not only made enough scream to power the door from the other side to the point it exploded, they filled 118 canisters and overpowered the lights on the floor until they popped. And there was STILL excess scream that they couldn’t contain. That’s ALOT of scream these two college freshmen kids made.

It makes sense. As a child, it's easy to be afraid of the dark and the monster under the bed. But you take a group of adults, people who put that fear behind them, convinced themselves that it was silly. Then you prove to them that all those fears are real and right in front of you. Nothing is more terrified than an adult whose nightmares just came true.

As the previous comment said, my understanding is that it's human emotion period which they use to power things, but some of the strongest emotions are fear and laughter. After all, fear taps into the primal instincts of a human and activates that fright/flight response. And laughter is capable of overpowering fear, so it makes sense for it to be stronger, they just never discovered laughter. Anyway, I figured they were able to generate so much power because it's easier to make a child scared than it is to make an adult scared, and not just adults but police. They have literal weapons in their hands, training to defend themselves, and presumably training in not letting their emotions run amok. So they're basically ripe for the picking when it comes to juicing them for their fear, it's just hard to break through the shell to get to the juice inside.

For Randall, I think this film shows more of a step for what would become his rivalry with Sulley, more than the start of his rivalry with Sulley. Randall is established in this movie as someone who really cares about what other people think of him. After Sulley leading to him embarrassing himself, I imagine he would have been even more motivated to prove himself and would have worked especially hard to get his scaring degree. I believe his hatred for Sulley and Mike came once he gets to Monsters Inc. Could you imagine working your tail off to get a degree and getting a job at your dream company, only to find the two people who embarrassed you in college (and were expelled before they ever got a degree) at the top of the employee ladder already, without a degree or all that extra schoolwork? I wouldn’t blame him for hating them either.

Oh for sure it’s makes sense and is super fleshed out. My point is that this whole history and “step” in having a more personal hatred for Sully works just as well as a more traditional motivation like in the original film. Both work extremely well, I just don’t think Randall’s past in MU really improves or detracts from the original character. I always like to see a bit more of a character regardless of whether it isn’t executed the best way, but I could easily understand why some other people would see Randall’s back story and not feel like it was justified enough compared to the more simple motivation he had in the original.

In the first task of the Scare Games, on the team that gets disqualified is George Sanderson. He is the monster that gets 23-19d in Monsters Inc. So he gets DQd for using a “childtouch prohibit gel” and then later gets into trouble again for child toys touching him. Nice touch

Dean Hardscrabble was honestly quite an amazing character. She was stern, strict, and steadfast, but not prideful or snobby. She was an interesting authority figure.

This movie gave a whole new layer to the "What about everything we ever worked for? Does that matter?" fight that they have in the Himalayas, looking how long and how hard they must have worked to get from the bottom to the top, how deeply personal for both of them was trying to get that record. Also I love that you mentioned in your Monsters Inc review about how even with his ego Mike is alright with Sully taking most of the spotlight, because that's basically his arc in this movie.

This movie is SOOO underrated out of Pixar’s catalog. I know a lot of people found the college themes not fun, but I did! And the message of the film is SOOO good. That sometimes you can chase after a dream and never be able to fulfill it due to being born different, but that it is okay. And the character origins of all main characters is so good. Mike being a dreamer, sullen being a cocky jock, Randal being a nerd haha. I also love how they make scaring like a science. It’s so interesting! I love this movie and people really don’t give it enough credit.

Fun Fact - In the official dubs of Pixar movies, Pixar's animators often alter textures or the entire models, so that in different countries there could be readable text in a different language. Randal's cupcakes were very tricky to translate, since there was only seven letters available, four of which needed to make out a word for a gag later on... So to fix this issue, internationally the letters on the cupcakes were retextured to be smiley faces instead

Yess. This was always my favourite movie to watch on planes and in those versions it had the smileys on the cupcakes, but when I watched it anywhere else it was the letters and I always wondered why that was. Plus the scene where Mike flexes his exam results to the Roars, in the smiley cupcake version it shows a smiley face on his exam instead of an A+, and Sullie gets a frownie face lol

A detail that I think makes the Randle vs Mike & Sully feud even more deep is that I am sure after the scare games when he Randle lost, his resentment towards the two started but, the thing that I think just added fuel to the fire was that he finished University and get a job at Monsters Incorporated, only to already see Mike & Sully already on the scare floor. He would be so confused on how the two monsters that were kicked out of Uni, got on the scare floor before him

This movie has so many incredible points, it doesn't sugar coat things and have messages like "If you try hard enough you can do anything" which is not to say that you shouldn't try as if Mike didn't try he wouldn't have been Sully's partner at Monsters Inc, but that not everyone is meant to do some things regardless of how badly you want it. I also like the fact that they went to college in hopes of getting a job at a place, just for the college/university to just be a time and money suck that was irrelevant as they got their dream job anyways lol.

I recently heard the script for what was originally supposed to be the sequel to the first film but they inevitably decided to do a prequel instead and I'm glad they did, it turned out great! I love that we got this backstory for Mike and Sulley. The original sequel would've been nice but I definitely think they made the right decision to change it

i LOVED your appreciation of this movie. A lot of people didnt know how to appreciate it in my social circle and i was so dissappointed cuz it was a great movie and deserved better recognition. As someone whos the BIGGEST fan of Monsters Inc, I can tell you I loved the prequel. It's just that people wanted to watch a lie and see Mike being scary, when that's not possible. Randal graduated from the top university for scaring, was a part of the scaring program, joined the scariest fraternity... and yet Sully and Mike got into the same company and even bested him. So I don't think his arc was not significant. I think it shows that it doesn't matter what school you graduated or how high your grades were, it's all about opportunity and hard work. You can start from the bottom, but you can reach the top like anyone else who had ladders

People are kinda misunderstanding what I said. It’s not that it’s not significant, in fact it’s really in depth and adds a lot to his character. What I said is that this version of Randall doesn’t necessarily enhance the original story. It changes a lot of things and makes it fresh, but the simplicity of the original motivation is just as effective. They’re just two different approaches.

What I absolutely loved about this movie is the fact that it shows a protagonist failing to achieve what they always dreamed of, and who instead shifts his priorities and finds peace with the fact that he couldn't do what he wanted. As a result, his dream changes, but he finds joy in that!

This is my second biggest comfort movie after Big Hero 6. It hits so close to home and the messages behind it are so important, especially for young adults going through university. It's also just so much fun and so sweet and so funny. This movie holds such a special place for me. I just love it. I really like the moral of this story, it was mature, a bit harsh but also truthful. That you can't actually become anything in the world; some things are just not meant for you. But there's always something you *can* excel at, and we all have talents of different kinds. And while I can't really relate to Mike's situation in school fully (I was more like the ROAR kids back then) I really respect his can-do attitude, even though back then for someone like him I would've, admittedly made fun of it. I think I am also one of the few who liked Dean Hardscrabble. She was tough, stern and elitist but only to promote excellence in a field which demands it, for the survival of their world. She did prove by the end to not have a stone heart. Side note: I just noticed this on this reaction: Randall has a poster in his dorm with Mike, "winds of change", this is what he tells Mike in the first movie when he claims he's about to beat Sully's record: "shh shh shh did you hear that? It's the winds of change!"

I like that it’s a little harsh, and if I’m correct, this movie was not just meant to be for kids but also the audience that watched monsters inc as children when it first came out so they’d be adults by now, so the message is meant to give hope and direction to young adults who have experiences like Mike.

I saw this movie so many times in the theaters! I even saved every single movie ticket. I think that's saying something about how much I love this movie. That part where Mike and Sulley scare those adults, I swear it always felt like the entire building was shaking. It might just as well have been my imagination, but that feeling combined with Sulley jumping down and roaring was incredible! I guess it really made a lasting impression because it's something I still think about. I'm SO happy you also love and appreciate this movie just as much as I do. This is the perfect prequel. And Mike and Sulley really are just a perfect team.

It's so great to see you appreciate this movie as much as I do! I don't know why it was considered a let-down when it was released, I think people were expecting it to be a sequel instead. Personally, I think it works as a perfect prequel, and it enhances the experience when you go to rewatch Monsters Inc. afterwards! It gives a message you don't see a lot in movies. You should watch (not necesserily react to) Monsters at Work,which tells what happens between Waternoose's arrest and the final scene when Sulley and Mike managed to use laughs instead of screams. Aside from following on how they run the company on a new energy program, it also follows the newly gratiuated Tylor Tuskmon, who attempts to just from becoming a Scarer to being a Jokster while he works at MIFT (Monsters, Inc. Fixing Team, basically the repairing team of the company). The start of the first episode will have a reference to (and be set in) Monsters University with an apperance of Progessor Knight. There'll also be an episode of how The Abomible Snowman comes back to the human world and we see the REAL reason for his banisment unlike how it's implied at the end of this movie.

I remember being skeptical when they announced this movie because the first one is just such a classic. very similar to when they announced finding dory. (you should watch finding nemo and finding dory btw) BUT this movie blew me away! i remember saying it may even be better than the first!!

The majority of this movie is pretty decent, good fun, but kinda typical what youd expect from this story. The last act though completely turns it into a marvel. To take your standard inspirational story where he was told no his whole life, but then worked hard enough that eventually... and then still have it go wrong for him, its such an important lesson handled in a such a good and still uplifting way in a supposedly kids movie. Yes there are some things you just wont be able to achieve, but there are still plenty of places and ways you can apply yourself and your dreams in meaningful ways even if its not your first option. Overlooked peak imo

Size shouldn't matter and shouldn't judge based on looks. Like sully definitely doesn't look scary until he does his thing. Honestly small ones usually tend to be scarier. Mike wisowski is smart and can be athletic like what he did to catch the mascot animal 10:08 , and you can learn to scare a lot of things you got to learn it can't just do it with everything

It’s balance. The movie is trying to tell the audience that looks 100% matter when scaring, that’s why Mike fails in the end, but technique and utilising what you have also 100% matters. One doesn’t work without the other, Mike and Sully represent both of those aspects, without each other they’d both fail. But looks 100% matter, it’s just that it doesn’t do all the work.
