Yo Johnny, just wanted to say thanks for sharing all the stories and transitioning into a full time podcast. I know allot of what you cover is human pain and suffering but I gotta say I really enjoy the work you're doing. I spent my youth (teens and 20's) doing criminal shit so I can relate to most of this stuff and I feel lucky/ blessed I was able to get out of that lifestyle (your content is a reminder that I made the right choice and the struggle of being law abiding was and is worth it, considering the alternative) Thanks bro. Cheers.

Keep the honesty coming bro. Someone has to have the balls to do it. We need people to understand that the criminal justice system of America is just that, damn criminal. And the only people who believe otherwise are those who benefit from it or who have never ever been involved with it. Much respect for what you are doing. Never doubt that no matter the subject, truth is God's Own Business and work.

1:01:25 how do you or others like yourself reconcile being part of such a corrupt system, a system that causes so much net+ pain and suffering to a large percentage of humans? In this clip you say "it was my job, i was just getting paid", is that all you need to justify being a part of such a corrupt system? Do you ever feel bad about it, has your family ever questioned your morality for it? I'm not trolling, I'm genuinely curious since you do seem like a good person, and I very much respect veterans. Although, personally, I could never be a part of something like that and still consider myself... morally sound.

I did 30 years a C/O in california, thank god i got out clean and did not get caught up in stupidity. I saw a lot of violence and was able to get a lot of insight into inner workings that many officers do not get. I started in 1988. One of the real reason there is so many issues is because people who have no clue are making policy, politicians making changes which are dangerous to inmates and staff.

Dude there are so many stabbing and killings and beatings in California prisons- if they arrested everyone who did something there’d be no one left on the yard. Not to mention the more you crack down on the inmates doing what they need to do in order to maintain discipline and order amongst their ranks, you’re gonna set off a riot and the whole yard is gonna turn on you.

Thank you. You explained California very accurately. Those outside of the state don’t get it. think if you traveled on the east coast from Virginia to Florida, you would experience so many cultural differences. California spans that same distance but on the west coast. To think that it’s one culturally homogeneous state is naive. From San Diego to Redding may as well be two different worlds.

Ret. Worked at San Quentin. Explaining how his dad was identified up in town. His dad got 'a pass''. First time happened to me, was pretty intense. Respect, earning their respect, treating them like human beings, because they are... Can be the difference whether you're allowed to go home after your shift, and I attribute the respect I gave day and day out, regardless of how I felt, stay consistent. Because I was that way, is why I was allowed to go home after every shift and ultimately, the fellas allowed me to retire. When they see you out in town, and you get that pass, it's a sign that you're acting the right way.

He talks about his father being trusted to work in AdSeg. At San Quentin, that place was called The Adjustment Center. When I first started at SQ, we could go anywhere, except the AC. Right as you walked in through the count gate, the AC was to your left. So you always walk by it on your way to wherever you're going to work. It was mysterious. One day I got called into The Substation to be instructed to report to the AC. Just when I got rid of my stomach nerves from working there, just when I got comfortable, my nerves came right back because finally, I was going to go into the AC. It took me about a year and a half before I was chosen to work in there. Like Vegas, what happens in the AC, stays in the AC. Like this gentleman's father spoke of working an AdSeg, depending on that lock up, is a tight crew.

Gotta love hectors candor. Know he from the other end of the map but he comes off just like the laid back, small town cali folk from up north. Mad easy going. Like to think Johnny was able to appreciate the rare kinda of solid soul he was lucky enough to interview. Hectors patience and chill demeanor REALLY helps all of Johnnys’ forward, obnoxious, inappropriate style of questioning flow into a very in depth, informative series of exchanges, which then soon transitions into this emboldened super quality dialogue making for an overall solid in interview John was lucky to score. You’d think there was some good chemistry there at first, until hectors subtleties begin to start looking like flat out frustration at times. Coulda swore he gives Johnny a look in the immediate few seconds following 1:11:00 where he just wishes he could slap him just one time real quick, while also realizing this dude just can’t help it. Johnny should really work on establishing some better parameters for himself and his approach to these more highly sensitive potentially more volatile interviews. I mean dam… the degree at which he made himself look so naive and ignorant for such an extended period of time began to just baffle me. Like get a clue bro, learn how to get a better feel for who your interviewing and learn a more sensible approach for people who may have more trauma and/or baggage.

You must have been watching the wrong interview because dude was just asking questions. Hector's demeanor is nowhere near how you described.

All these interviews would be so much better if he'd stop interrupting. Let them finish then ask questions
