I’m currently trying to figure out what camera to purchase between Nikon and Canon. I have no skin in the game at this point. One thing I’ve noticed is there are a lot of biased reviews. Canon people are inevitably going to knock Nikon but I’ve noticed the Nikon people aren’t nearly as snarky towards canon. Just an interesting observation that I’ve made over the last week of trying to decide what to get.

No one pays me anything for my reviews. I own and use it all and I way prefer Canon because of how it handles and how great my images look. Nikon images look as good, but I find the inferior ergonomics make it more difficult to get those results. Have a look at www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm for details. Of course we all have different hot buttons as to what’s important to us. I prefer nikon and canon image quality equally and prefer Canon s ergonomics. OM system has even better ergonomics but inferior image. Sony has awful ergonomics and inferior image (mostly I base these on cooor rendition and we all have different taste. I rate Fuji the bottom for worlds worst ergonomics and dull, boring low saturation image quality. Thanks!

Ken has done some amazing work over many years helping people like me get into the hobby with some degree of confidence. For a hobbyist, photography is very expensive and we want to be sure we are getting our money’s worth and future proofing ourselves/ investing in the right system etc. Ken has an opinion and the subjective comments (Japan vs Thailand)are for us to evaluate and perhaps discount; but it does make for more interesting reading/ viewing. For a one-many band who was years ahead of the pack, it’s been a great journey. If I am looking for reviews on gear stuff, I come here. If I need tips on composition or seeing the light etc, I subscribe to Scott Kelly’s master class with greats like Jay Maisel etc. The issue with following photographers on system reviews is that they stick with 1 system for decades because they have invested heavily in it and have developed lot of muscle memory. Or they get sponsored by a particular company (?). I also like DP Review. Finally, I would rather just go out and shoot.

Ken, no camera can know what face you want focus on. That's a stupid thing to expect. No. Your canon R6 doesn't know. It's always based on an algorithm. In this case, Nikons focus on the closest object. For Canon, it's any face that stands out. Like it will focus on a person who's standing when the rest are sitting. But even that's luck for most of the times. The rest of the greatness of canon is your FAITH.
@KenRockwellTV4 жыл бұрын
It’s not that Canon is superior; it’s that Nikon is inferior to everything else. My iPhone and other Nikons all figure out that the biggest, closest face is the one on which to focus-which is correct. MynZ7 even firmware 3 often focused \ \ rear faces wrong. Thanks!

Ken, totally ignoring the video features of this camera and speaking on about how great Canon is may be a disservice. I do event photography and video. The overheating issues that both the Canon R5 and R6 suffer from are real concerns. Say I am doing a celebration of life service outside here in the Midwest, it is 90 degrees in the shade and much warmer in the sun. Could I trust the Canon’s not to overheat? I would consider going Canon particularly (the R5) if I could depend on it. Most event photographers like myself have become hybrid shooters by necessity. Mixing stills with video clip grabs. Could you throw some light on the Canon HQ video mode and All-I and IPB compression. The Nikon internal video looks pretty good straight out of camera. Yeah I know it is 8 bit... Most of what I shoot is less than 20 minutes but there are longer events. I can work around the 29:59 video clip limits but what if the camera is dead due to overheating for the next hour? So what video modes give equivalent video on the Canon. This is a serious question? Currently I shoot stills with a Nikon D750 and video with a Sony RX 100 MK VII. I have never had the Sony shutdown but I do enable the high heat setting. You might be able to preserve more detail in high ISO by shooting in RAW and manually editing the noise. Nikon JPEG handling can be heavy handed. Topaz DeNoise AI is a powerful tool. I do understand your use of JPEG’s. Sometimes after a shoot there is no time to edit and meet a deadline.

I really enjoyed it as, like your articles, you are black and white on your reviews thus not leaving me unsure about you felt about the various features of the camera. What i loved even more, is that I keep on thinking to upgrade my camera for the video features.... as currently on family holidays I have equipment for my iPhone (e.g. gimble) for videos and equipment for my camera (d750). However, your fallout to use iPhone for video, it reminds me how I am actually really happy with the video... and i have already spent considerable money for accessories to improve my iPhone videos. The dilemma then becomes, do I stick with d750, do i take advantage of people selling their d850 and buy one second hand, or do i stop chasing older models and jump to the d780. On this topic I am stuck...but also not in a rush as the d750 is still doing great.

Last year I dropped the d750 (no damage) on the top of Cradle Mountain in South Africa because I was constantly switching iphone/video and Nikon/photos. During the back and forth between devices, the camera slipped out of my hands the only time in that trip that I did not have the strap around my neck; murphy's law. There was firmware that fixed AF in the original Z6, making it as good as Sony a7 III. In camera charging could one day fry your camera. Every Nikon will be made in Thailand, but great cameras like the D850 and D500 have always been made in Thailand. The Z6 AF works great now too. Just get the most st recent firmware. The Z5, for some reason, works the best of the three. But what’s up with the 4.5 FPS in continues shooting? 🤔 However, the Z50 remains the winner here. Correct. Nikon's first full-frame mirrorless cameras had mounts with 24mm diameter throats. There were the 1940s rangefinder cameras www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/rangefinder/index.htm . IN this case, Nikon is using larger mounts to give themself leeway and options in the future, and as a marketing hook for a FUD campaign today www.kenrockwell.com/business/fud.htm Thanks!
@sarfaraz.hosseini4 жыл бұрын
@@ytr8989 The wider throat allows for greater flexibility in lens designs and IBIS implementation, but lenses will also be bigger, heavier, and susceptible to vignetting. We also shouldn't discount the shorter flange distance, which offers significant IQ improvements. So while Sony had a narrow lens mount, their far shorter flange distance enabled spectacular lens designs and IQ that Canon and Nikon DLSRs can never match. All lenses are expensive, fewer people take photos with ICL cameras.

(First was typed for the ZFc review) I first found out about Ken Rockwell from my dad, because around 2017 I was allowed to use his Nikon D80, then I haven't been following about cameras in a while, until recently I got an award from my college, cause otherwise I wouldn't be able to buy a camera (well I could've saved up for it, but it'd take literal years, cause other more important stuff). Read some lens reviews of some very early Fuji lenses and his reviews are so witty it was fun to read. I think I'm more of an utilitarian person, but for some reason I gravitate to the Fuji, but specifically the Fuji XT line (for the dials... I think, and the colors are neat, but I can't compare either directly), another buut is I went and looked to the old Fuji cameras, up to their DSLRs using the Nikon F mount, honestly feeling some doubts. One other but, is from a functionality standpoint the XT3 right now is in a very bang for the buck position for a hybrid mirrorless, and maybe because the ZFc isn't as featured as what I want from the XT3, also I plan to get the XT3 with a Zeiss touit 32mm f1.8. The battery isn't a problem since from a price to capacity point, it's basically the same. Now, I did mention my dad had a Nikon D80, he has a few Nikon F(x) lens, I waas hoping they'd make a FTZ adapter that could use the screwdriven lenses, so at this point I'd just rather save up for a used FX DSLR if I want to do that. (Also the Z lens selection feels meh right now) So, in the end I convinced myself to still get the XT3, since I wanted one anyway, it's small, and why not, it is risky, but I won't know till I try. (I tried handling XT5, XH2, XS20, Z6III, ZF, ZFc at a camera store. the Z cameras felt massive except ZfC ofc, the Z6 was very nice handling (yes it's the Z6iii but it should be close enough). The Fuji cameras were okay in handling, I still want the XT 3 since it's a good hybrid camera at a cheap used price, and in the future I might not buy a new XT camera cause the XT5 has become a very photo-centric, and a high MP APS-C, cumbersome camera.) I rambled for too long

For photographers who do not necessarily need to use video, a DSLR is a nicer camera to use, rather than a mirrorless. A few years ago I switched totally to Fujifilm and bought a whole string of their mirrorless cameras. But more recently had a hankering for the extra responsiveness of a DSLR. So I looked at a D500 again. But soon found Nikon have kept the price artificially high, making it unviable. Which has sent all the potential Nikon customers over to have a look at the Pentax K3 III, which is now a better camera. It's unlikely I shall go back to a mirrorless again. For photography I prefer using a DSLR. Maybe Fujifilm might see which way the wind is blowing and produce a DSLR? We live in hope.

You already have one of the best 35mm cameras ever made. Why would you want to change? Can’t you take good photos with it? Will you be able to take better photos with a mirrorless? It seems you’re being drawn into the marketeers’ web to part with your hard-earned!

@@KenRockwellTV Thanks. I'd been told the AIs would work on the 750 and 850, and oddly the 750 prices haven't dropped. Yes, I'm crazy for resolution, so I thought I'd try to ease the budget up in case the higher res and ZxII features proved irrestible. I have Kodachromes that look good six feet....and when scanned snd digitized at 24 vs 45 MP, the 45MP scans win. So...I know pixels aren't everything, but I'ven what can mean.

i wanted to like the z6/7 but I just can't. Too many annoyances. I moved to Lumix S1H and S1R and am glad I did. The S1H is hands down the best mirrorrless camera on the market for photo and video combined. Not even the Canon R5 comes close.

Nope. Get the Z50. I use the SB400 flash www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/sb400.htm

The R5 makes you reach all the way across the camera with your other hand to turn on and off the camera. The R6 Canon goes way cheap and removes the top LCD which would drive me nuts. One reason I ditched Canon years ago.

We’re all different. I never turn my Canon EOS R5 or Canon EOS R6 off unless I put them in a bag and I prefer the mode dial on the Canon EOS R6. Thanks!

It's stupid to tell the quality of a product based on where it's manufactured/assembled. To use your own words: You are far better off looking at the images made by a camera or lens and not wasting time looking where the "made in" sticker says.
@KenRockwellTV2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Quality is much broader than just looking at the products: where it’s made affects the people and communities that build the products. as well as the legitimate or illegitimate governments governing or dictating over each nation. Thanks!

I like your review, its great as always, but some of your complains are just picky. Play and Delete on left side is an issue...? come on now...

For those of us who shoot all day, every single day, this matters. Little things become big pains when you have to deal with them all day long. For the few of us for which this goes way beyond being a hobby where we only spend an hour or two every week behind a camera, for me it’s like 10 hours every day so it matters. Thanks for asking!

For Price which is major fact to choose Camera Nikon is much cheaper than Canon in mirrorless, you get IBIS, 2 card slots good autofocus in R6 in canon and that costs couple of more $$$ than Nikon Z6 ii and gets overheat on Top, yeah it may be better in autofocus but for wildlife Dslrs still have an edge so Nikon again D500 or D850 wins. Canon RP or R got 1 card slot and no IBIS so no reason to buy them. Thanks Canon Fanboy.
