I knew 3 people that had crossfires, none of them ran well, but they are good looking cars!
@johnosborn25555 ай бұрын
When you say that "none of them ran well", are you saying that they did not run smoothly, were troublesome to maintain, or just slow? They were used by GM, European and Japanese auto makers in one form or another for many years. Of any form of fuel injection ever installed on an American car, the TBI was easily the most reliable.

Great fix Ben! I remember replacing many different model GM in tank pumps way back when everyone changed over to fuel injection. Same pump. lol. I remember my old co-worker saying. "I don't like this fancy idea of running an electric motor in 20 gallons of gasoline"! What if the motor heats up? Or a wire gets loose"? lol. I miss those days. But i sure don't miss those early Ford ( I think) "variable venturi" carburetors !! Or the early Chrysler "Lean burn" system. Wheeew! don't light a match!

Back when the Crossfire first came out it quickly earned the reputation for "can't fire" with all the problems the first attempt by GM for electronic fuel injection. The second attempt with Tuned Port Injection ( 1985 ) was much better and more reliable.

Great video! Appreciate the info. I'm curious why you went straight to testing/pulling the fuel pump before testing the other simpler things that could have gone bad like the Fuel Pump fuse, Fuel Pump relay or ECM. Also, would checking for faults via the ODB1 module throw a code that would tell us what went wrong (bad relay, bad ECM or bad fuel pump)?

My gas tank must be shifted up as well because my 82 Collector sending unit sits exactly the same. (Side note) That rubber vapor line on the left side of the sending unit had a split and was the reason I wasn't passing California Emissions testing. There are actually 2 rubber hoses on the left and it was the further most one. The hardest to reach one of course.

Hi Ben, I’ve got the same problem with mine & went through the process to check power. I noticed when you used the light on the car you connected the centre pin to earth but that’s the fuel sender wire? Red on car connects to purple on sender plug & purple goes to sender. When you powered the pump on the bench it looked like you used the outer pins? Just using zoom & a keen eye as mine is only getting power to the fuel sender not the pump

I am confused about your testing procedure. Looks like you had the fuel pump disconnected from the harness when you rigged up the test light to the wiring harness coming from the car. You turned the key on, the test light came on, but when you cranked the engine, the test light went out... Seems like the test light should come on for just a few seconds when you turn the key on to prime up the system, but it should stay on when cranking... I got lousy eyes so probably just didn't see the light correctly. Edumacate me Ben!
@TheCorvetteBen Жыл бұрын
Test light didn’t go out, it was just very dim. Hard to see on camera but you could see it in real life. The battery was also really low due to the owner cranking it over and over.

@johnosborn25555 ай бұрын
You say that it will be a fuse, relay, or the pump, but not the inline fuel filter?? Always change the filter before changing the pump. There is nothing wrong with TBI systems, millions of GM vehicles were equipped with them. Regarding the 1982 Corvette, most complain because it is rather slow, but what do expect from 9:1 compression, a taxi-cab cam and a 2.87 rear axle ratio? Everything in 1982 was slow.

@@TheCorvetteBen Very true Ben. Love the videos and hope you keep doing them. Just pointing out that lots of things come from overseas, some good...and some bad. The common (and over used) blanketed statement of "it from China, so it's junk" is not accurate. What makes things junk are companies that don't have any quality control in place. Although AC Delco has recently gone overseas, for the obvious reason of increasing the wealth of Owner's/CEO's, I believe they have incorporated good quality control... but time will tell. Take care and keep up the awesome vids!
