Absolutely. I always find the nose of a NEIPA lets down the palate. With all of the late addition whirlpool hops you get tons of aroma but when I go to drink them the flavors feel muted.

It's great to see the West Coast IPA get a revival in the last year alongside lagers. Just two years ago you were seeing West Coast brewers slapping 'hazy' on their beers just so they will sell. That era feels like it's coming to an end. And it feels like West Coast is becoming a much more distinct beer in contrast to NEIPA.

I'm going to guess the reason for the confusion was the when someone says they want to make a westy or a west coast, the default there is IPA. As far as I know, a west coast pale ale isn't really a thing, it's just a pale ale. Like Sierra Nevada Pale isn't a westy, it's just a pale. But the example the brewer brought up, Pliny the Elder, that's a quintessential double IPA, but I guess you could call that a west coast double IPA. To me, someone who lived in California for 18 years where the style was basically created, a westy is a 6%-7% ABV malt forward IPA using mostly traditional American C hops. However, I definitely like the addition of Simcoe and Amarillo for a modern west coast IPA.
