I use plastigauge and bore micrometers to blueprint my engines. After a few ive found plastigauge to be off by a few ten thousands of an inch. On my modular ford stuff , i shoot for 1 tho and 5 to 8 tenths for bearing clearances. Plastigauge is awesome and very , very close to real numbers. If youre just rounding it off to the thousands , then its perfectly acceptable and works just fine. If my crush lines are slightly larger then 2 thou then i know im between 1 and 2 thousands of an inch. Then checking it with my micrometers confirms that. Its honestly awesome stuff !

Great video.. keep trying to work up the courage to rebuild my 289 myself.. crate engines are so affordable now it’s tempting, but there’s just something about running an engine you built yourself. Hope it all works out!

My main girdle came with main studs and two nuts per stud. instructions said to install the studs, the main cap, and nuts, then torque down the nuts. After that was done there were more nuts to hold down the windage tray and main studs. You really should be using main studs if you plan on spinning it that high. Torquing bolts down on top of the girdle and windage tray isn't a good idea. They could easily loosen up and cause a disastrous failure.

Hey Craig. I hate nose hairs as well. Just buy a really good set of revlon tweezers. Then 2-3 times a week pluck em out! Also remember, a motor that is to tight , is way more likely to blow up than one that is to loose..

You went a little nuts with the plastigage, you only need a little bit right in the middle of the surface to get your measurement. Seems like a bigger variance between your oil clearances than I would be comfortable with but the measurements may not be super accurate. Glad your buddy was there to catch that main cap, as somebody who's also almost dropped engine parts I felt your pain. I'm sure this thing will be a ripper when you get it running but maybe take another peak at those clearances, be a shame to see all that work go to waste.

What octane fuel are you going to run? Im looking forward on doing a 460 build, but im not really sure what compression ratio to aim for. In my country you can get 95 and 98 on most gas stations and even 100+ on some.
@Enigma-Sapiens
@Enigma-Sapiens 2 жыл бұрын
With aluminum heads, you can run 12.5:1 compression with that kind of octane. Maybe consider adding a meth injection kit too, it'll help keep it from detonating in case of some bad gas, and let it live longer.

He very well may be... but I don't know that one way or the other. What I do know and what Craig freely admits is that he has hammered pretty hard on his truck so we shouldn't be surprised that the 302 that still resides under the hood developed a serious issue. Still runs... but obviously shouldn't until repairs are made. My point? The 302 under the hood wasn't up to what Craig was putting it through... but not because he built it. It probably would have developed a problem no matter who built it if using the same parts under the same conditions at the same experience level. What's the bottom line here? It doesn't matter what engine or vehicle it is that you're using because if it isn't up to what you demand of it then you're going to have failure. As for your perception of him needing to leave it to the pros while practicing on parts yard engines, well, that's your opinion but is something to consider. I doubt he has any formal training so that's the biggest issue for him when it shouldn't be an issue at all. You either know what you're doing or you don't. But while that's basically true, it is his time, energy and money he's using up. He lives or dies by his own decisions just like everyone else. If he chooses to learn a few things the hard (and probably expensive!) way then that's all on him. Peace & good vibes! - Max Giganteum
