When I first saw the album cover I immediately thought of Chronic wasting disease because of the skeleton deer, how the prions are transmitted as animals move around, how they're dying inside. I especially like the line "Like spare coins, poised on the tip of my tongue" as 1. the prions can be transmitted through saliva and salt licks, 2. because ancient greeks used to put coins under the tongues of the dead, and 3. banger of a line I love it so much

I know it’s possible that the band will never see this but this band has truly saved my life. I discovered them in June 2023, during the hardest part of my life. And ever since their songs are so soothing that I play them anytime I’m upset or just need something to get me through the day. I admittedly have the weirdest character correlation to this song in my head, but it's burrowed into my brain and I may never be able to undo it. I have a thematic reason that works with it, though. Fair warning, I'm just going to get this premise out of my head, since hyperfixation mode has been only **intensifying** for me, nowadays. Apologies for how long this comment may get... 💀 My maladaptive daydreaming attached this song to a messed up ship, involving an OC and The Quarry's Travis Hackett. (Yes, Ted Raimi's creepy cop character...but please bear with me...) Said OC is a college dropout that's gone through their own shitty experiences, and their estranged father was the journalist that the Hackett family killed, prior to the dropout taking up a counselor job at Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp. Made things more awkward for the sheriff (Travis) and another OC (which was a character one roomie and I made together), since the journalist's only kid had temporarily been roommates with the other two characters before the camp's season began-and the struggling dropout had not been particularly subtle enough about their infatuation with the sheriff. They may be in their early to mid 20s, but the age difference still leaves a stigma that is called out a great deal in the story. As I said, it becomes a messed up ship, even though Travis tries his best before shit hits the fan to keep his distance. Between trying to keep his younger roommate at arm's length (after finally realizing that they were pining for him), plus the tragedy of his family having to cover up the murder of said roommie's father? Top that whole mess off with the general werewolf threat in The Quarry, and Travis starts reaching his wit's end. A canonical line the sheriff says in the game, when he finally tries to explain the werewolf problem? He brings up the metaphor of his family being "at the bottom of the well," and how he's at the top of the "rope," struggling to save them all. Thematically, this song feels fitting for that fucked up dynamic-of Travis worrying he'll become the "well" that will be the younger person's ruin-especially when playing off of that metaphor involving his cursed family.

This song has occupied my every thought since it came out and I love overthinking everything, so here’s my analysis. (It’s a little long, bear with me). I initially thought this song was about a friend or loved one they could no longer talk to because of distance or death (“All the words I couldn’t say to you”). However, given all of the Crane Wives songs about abusive relationships, I figured this song was also deeper than it seems. I realized that “All the words I couldn't say to you” could also mean fear. In unhealthy relationships, one person is usually forced to step on eggshells to avoid upsetting or angering the other. Maybe the speaker couldn’t say anything because their words would have angered someone else. If that’s the case, then “All the words I couldn't say to you \ Fill up the spaces in my chest \ Like spare coins, poised on the tip of my tongue \ I make a wish and hold my breath” makes quite a bit of sense. There’s a lot they want to say, but the speaker chooses to hold their breath because they’re scared of the reaction. This also explains the line “Oh, the damage I'd have wrought”, as any phrase can send an abuser into a fit of rage. I believe that this relationship was in the past. For one, “the words I *couldn’t* say” is in the past tense. Second, the speaker describes this relationship as being in their “memories.” “That old house, those rotting memories / Burned easier than I'd have thought” implies that the speaker has mostly forgotten their abuser, to their surprise. They expected to miss them, but they don’t. The speaker then describes their words as “A ready army in [their] throat”, again implying that their words carried power and couldn’t be said. I read “I taste blood, I'm sick of swallowing stones” as the speaker being tired of swallowing their words. It is at this point that the speaker decides not to put up with their abuser anymore. “So I'll wave the flag, tell the boys to go home” is the speaker deciding to retreat (not fight back, simply get out). As for the chorus, I believe it to take place either during the relationship or as a guilty conscience long after. “Send me anywhere, take me out” reads to me as the speaker blaming themself, feeling as though they need to get out of their abuser’s way so as not to bother them. “I'm the well they're gonna drag you down” also feels like a guilt-ridden line to me. This also explains the visuals of the song: a deer trying to hold on long after it has died. By the end of the song, it finally decides to let go and rest. In summary, I believe the song is about an abused person after they were separated from their abuser. They reminisce about the many things they had to hide and struggle to shake off the feeling that they were at fault. However, they eventually decide that they’re tired of fighting a losing battle and leave the memories to the ashes.
