The Crowley Crew love your content. Learned a lot about my m50 for my own content. I prefer to use gray (neutral) for proper WB. May be a good idea to share that white cards are good in a pinch but you can’t be certain on the whites of the card. Having something like this amzn.to/2JH3XIA would be cheap and better to have so you could use the neutral gray to WB. That’s my amazon affiliate link but you could change it to yours and I’m sure people would buy it from this video. Anyway keep your great content rolling. Thanks for all you do!

1. Set your camera to “manual mode”. 2. Place your white/grey balance card approximately where your photo subject will be. 3. Zoom in to allow the card to be in the center or fill the frame and have the camera focus on the card. 4. Take a photo of your white/grey balance card ( _Note: generally, use the white side for white balance while the grey side is used for setting “exposure”. If using the white side for white balance, generally make sure the card is in the center of your frame. If checking exposure with the grey side, have the grey side fill the entire frame of your camera. In a pinch if you don’t have a white/grey card, use 3 to 4 ply’s of white typing/copy paper for white balance_ ). 5. Then select “menu” on your M50 camera. Scroll to the camera icon (red color band, a.k.a. “Shoot”) select option 3 “Custom White Balance”. 6. It will then allow you to choose a photo to serve as your white balance reference. Chose the photo you took of your white balance card and hit the “set” button and then the “ok” button. 7. Now you need to set your camera up to use the custom white balance settings you just programed. 8. Go back to the menu. Scroll to the camera icon (red color band, a.k.a. “Shoot”), now select option 4 “White Balance”, hit the set button (or tap on the screen the words “White Balance”). 9. While there, change “auto white balance” (AWB) to “custom”, hit the “set” button. (Note: _You can also switch to the custom white balance option while in shooting mode by pressing the “Q” button and using the touch screen_ ). 10. Now you can shoot using the custom white balance set by your white/grey card photo. 11. It is said it is better to set the white balance before shooting rather than trying to correct the balance in post-production. 12. Custom white balance is said to be “better” than using auto white balance. 13. If your lighting changes, you will need to set the custom white balance again to correspond to the new lighting conditions.

Great video. Another option to set white balance for the scene is to download a mobile app. Android has one called Color Temp Meter. Place your white card/piece of paper in the light landing on your subject and point your phone at that. The app will tell you both the colour temperature in degrees K and the name of a preset W/B such as shade, cloudy, etc. You can then set a Kelvin value or a standard preset if your camera doesn't have an actual colour temperature setting. This only works in natural or continuous lighting. It can't measure flash/strobe temperatures.
@TheCrowleyCrew5 жыл бұрын
Nice!! I will look into that. Is there a version for iOS?
@cooloox5 жыл бұрын
@@TheCrowleyCrew I don't have an iPhone anymore, but I think there may be more colour temperature apps for iOS than Android. I think I first heard about these apps for iOS and then checked if Android had one. I forgot to mention that I've actually tested it's accuracy using different globes which had specified colour temperatures and it's surprisingly accurate (on my Galaxy S8+).

I always only use Kelvin temperature to measure my white balance. If some light are greenish or magenta. I love it. You cannot have a whote piece of paper in any kind of light situation. It also deoends what you are shooting for and what purpose it serves the story. I always nail my white balance with kelvin and if i move around and light are shifting... I kinda embrace it. Mostly. Not all the time though. I am going to check this mode and asset you explained. It sounds cool.

You don’t think auto white balance is ok for consistent studio lighting? Would you consider the m50 the budget version of what Peter McKinnon uses? I’m looking to upgrade my camera from the SL2, I was thinking of getting the 5D Mark 2 but your shots with this little camera are pretty impressive. Appreciate your feedback.
@TheCrowleyCrew5 жыл бұрын
I find auto is inconsistent even in unchanging lighting. Say you block some of your key and it registers the room closer to your background light (in my case blue), it may change. As for the M50 Vs the SL2, they’re very similar cameras and you can get footage as good as mine with the SL2. The SL2 vs the 5D MKII, the footage from the SL2 will be sharper and you cannot get the 1080p slow motion (either 60p or 120p) with the 5D MKII. The 5D Mkii also doesn’t have video auto focus, a flip screen or as good of audio preamps.

@mobilechaosyt5 жыл бұрын
The card is a great idea for setting white balance. However the problem I have is color shifting during recording due to level of brightness differences in the set and the camera autocorrections. I video different angles in the set with two moving children moving around, so many times in post I'm doing multiple color and brightess corrections. I think going full manual might be the best way to deal with that, but it becomes limiting especially when a kid runs out of the studio and I'm chasing. What do you think is the best way to deal with sifting brightness?? Thanks
@TheCrowleyCrew5 жыл бұрын
That isn’t something that I have a lot of experience with. Maybe just leave ISO on auto, and the rest manual. And as for white balance if you are going from warm to cool lighting auto might be the only way to go.
@mobilechaosyt5 жыл бұрын
I think the color shift could be coming from the iso. The studio has 3 of the same lights however reflected color could definitely cause issues. I will just have to fool around with it until I get better at making more stable color with the shots.
@RexxReviews5 жыл бұрын
As always great information. I just got a new grey card because I noticed that my M50 is far more picky with white balance than previous cameras of mine.
