My all time favorite cube is the tengyun v1. When I open a cube and see colored nuts and slots for fancy adjustment tools, it really brings me down. It’s easy enough to learn how to adjust one cube, but I’d need a phd to keep up with all the cubes I have now. The V1 was built great, and was the most dead simple thing to adjust. It might not make sense to someone with a different set of preferences, but cubes with complex tensioning systems have a particular feel, your hands can feel the clicks propagating through the super-light mechanism. The V1 wasn’t just ‘soft’, it also has no extra ‘resonance’ to it, if you will. The V2 feels like a crunchy, heavy Gan. You can’t just make a cube better by adding features, I see nothing here that made the V1 great to those who actually liked it for what it was. To break it down, the V1 cost about $25 when I got it around early 2021 and had: Plain screw tensioning system Non adjustable medium strength magnets One color interior - since the pieces don’t have to clamshell apart to be multicolored, the construction is more homogenous inside with well-secured tiles. It also doesn’t feel as hollow as something like the RS3M, or any cube where the cubies have to split longways for the colors. I’ve had several cubes break in ways the tengyun V1 simply cannot. The posts can’t pull out of the corners, the magnets can’t break loose inside And the #1 biggest thing: THE TENGYUN V1 NEEDED NO SPECIAL TOOLS! Seriously, who decided we want a special doohickey with every cube nowadays? The tengyun V1 is still the only cube I know of that is traditionally simple whilst being built just as good as the best modern cubes. It was never viable for top competition, but that’s a silly point anyway. If your average solve is over 20 seconds, then you would be very stupid to get the theoretical optimal cube when you’re 1/3 the speed of people actually at the limit. Get a cube that actually feels good and maybe you’ll be inclined to play with it enough to get better. THAT is why the Tengyun was a great cube. Sorry for the paragraph, hope I made a point or something

I want to add that in my attempt to keep the tools handy, I ended up with most of the tools mixed up and a collection of boxes bigger than my cube collection. Seriously, why do cubes need proprietary tools? Instead of making us go to college before using your key to atlantis, why don’t you just embed a threaded sleeve in the core so the plastic can’t strip, and use a plain screw? And perhaps spend that extra 2 cents per cube for screws that won’t strip the top out? That solves every problem with screw cores aside from simple aesthetics.

your perspective of a cube feeling good when youre not world-class is on paper a very fair one, and i fully agree however it kinda contradicts your idea of no adjustment tools. if you want a cube that feels best for you, you want it to be just as you like it in terms of tightness, speed and magnets. and thats where the adjustment systems come in handy: you can adjust all these things to change them for your liking, and i believe that its the best way to change these things cause magnets are harder to get (also you wouldnt be able to make them weaker), and frankly no one wants to swap springs just to test if you like them on your cube
