Blood definitely makes family, but not always. Tom’s character reminds me of the five good emperor’s of Rome. They were considered among the best leaders in Rome’s history and they shared the common background of being the adopted son of the previous emperor. Rome reached its zenith under them. The glory days ended when Marcus Aurelius’ biological son, Commodus, took the throne. I guess there’s just something about someone taking you in and truly raising you as their own that makes the bond of loyalty that much stronger. And when responsibility falls to them they truly feel duty bound to do their best.

I always felt that Tom Hagen was sorely underrated as a character. He was an integral part of the Corleone family, a very intelligent and cunning individual who was just as ruthless as some of the tougher guys we see throughout the series. I would go so far as to say that his only true weakness was that because he was adopted, he yearned for his family's acceptance. This was something that Michael was easily able to exploit, as we get the sense that he didn't really even trust Tom despite what he says to him in Part II. He says himself, "I always wanted to be thought of as a brother by you Mikey, a real brother." In short, Tom was easily one of the smartest and most capable among them but had something of an inferiority complex that the others would use against him when necessary. I never felt like he got the respect he deserved

This isn't exactly related to the video but, considering the trilogy as a whole, the story of the Corleone's is about strategy over strength. They had been almost entirely wiped at one point, to being one of the wealthiest and most respected families in the country that were "almost" 100% legitimate. Of course, with no other options Vincent Mancini took over as don. I wish they would make a 4th film while Andy Garcia is alive so we could see what state the Corleone family would be in almost 40 years later.

Michael had been to war and had real strategic training as an officer in the Pacific theatre. He shows this in how he takes out ALL of his enemies in one move at the end of the first movie, something none of the other Don's would have ever considered or been able to devise and control. Tom weighed every word, gesture, look and thought things through twice before opening his mouth to speak. Sonny could come up with things on the fly but not like Michael would or with the depth of understanding of the long term repercussions that Tom would see. There are some targets you walk away from because while it looks like it would be a good win right now, the knock on effects would kill you later.
@paulnice196810 ай бұрын
Remember, Tom was also still under pressure from the Turk to “make the deal with Sonny” so I’m pretty sure that any talk that conflicted with that wasn’t well received. That’s part of the beauty of this film. Duval’s performance in this scene is so incredibly nuanced. Knowing what we know and also knowing what Tom is probably thinking as a result. I’ve watched that scene over 100 times and will always spot something new. This is always considered to be Michael’s big scene - where he finally starts to come out of his innocent college boy persona and morph into a real gangster. All in one scene. Meanwhile, keep your eyes on Tom. Notice HIS transformation too. By the end of that scene, he goes from hiding his reservations about going after the Turk from the rest of the family to ultimately coming around at the end. Confident that little Mikey might be right after all. Michael: “We have newspaper men on the payroll, right Tom? They might like a story like that.” Tom: “They might. They just might.” Brilliant.

The genius of Hagen was that he stood just outside the family, was more of a dispassionate observer than a hot blooded member. He was also a chameleon and could survive and fit in with different worlds. He was the one sent to deal with studio heads, Denators and other gangsters. Extremely valuable, the family should have taken his advice and gone in with Salozzo, made a ton of money and avoided bloodshed. He had it right.

I think your take was wrong. The reason Michael pushed out Tom was because it was possible that Tom would be the one to betray Michael. He was keeping Clamenza, Tessio and Tom all at arms length while he built a secret regime. To Tom’s credit, he was able to see through Michael’s plans just like the Don knew he would. There was also a secondary reason. Michael wanted to transition the family into legitimate businesses, and needed a lawyers not Consigliere.

this is really peak YT content. Thank you for posting. It is a bit nutty, but totally original and engrossing.

Tom's father was killed on Vito's orders. Sonny knew that. That's why he brought Tom home.

Great video. My biggest disappointment was hearing he had a mistress when Michael confronted Tom about the job offer. So, for as much self control as he had, he really didn’t have self-control.

Incredible insight!! Yeah that meeting with Moe Greene was amazing. The way Tom and Michael handled themselves.

One thing the movie doesn’t mention but the book does. The 5 families were extremely offended by Tom’s appointment to consigliere

Thank you, Tom Hagen was a great asset for the Family.

A true legend in his own right, he was as loyal as any man could be even if he was never a blood son of the Corleones

Tom’s biggest strength was that, unlike the other mobsters, he didn’t take anything personally, because he knew he was nobody without them. That allowed him to get the upper hand against mobsters so fully immersed in their own power that they couldn’t see the man lurking in the shadows the whole time.

Didn't know he had a sister. What happened to her once the Corleones took Tom in?

Last heard she was in a foster home.

Narrative at ~3:50 states, "Excluding Michael, he would go much further in his formal education, than any of the Corleone children." Tom went to Law School, while Michael dropped out of Dartmouth to enlist following Pearl Harbor.

Tom Hagen proved he deserved to be in the Inner Circle. 👍🏼 I wonder if Duvall looks back and regrets now not participating in TGF PIII. 🤔 Thanks for the vid❣️
