I love how people hate on things they don't understand. Instead of asking how much a system like this cost, ask this guy how much time and labor he spent designing, coding, and installing the different components of this system; making everything communicate properly. Also, since he build this from the ground up, he knows exactly how it's supposed to work so when issues arise it is very easy to troubleshoot. This guy does not call "tech support" when some component fails--he point to point troubleshoots and does the repairs himself. That's the difference between this guy and "some rich guy showing off his cool house computer". This stuff is interesting, I'm curious how much of a demand for these systems is out there for residential homeowners.
@matthewfieldhouse101

Obviously cost is going to be the first question because if someone can't even afford to build something like this then they wouldn't want to take the time to understand how to build it.

This is one of the greatest home automation systems I have ever seen. And I see you really know what you're doing here. I guess you are the one who thought of all the timer scenarios and stuff. Your home automation system covers everything (light, HVAC, audio, video, and macro buttons). This is just a great system and it gave me lots of great ideas. Thanks for sharing man. If I'm going to make my own automation system, I have a few ideas of my own, but I'm pretty sure I will keep this video for some great ideas.

I like how he shuts out the preconcieved ideas about automation systems. People are wanting a whole voice controlled system to go "Lights On/Off," yet a truly automated system lets you have full control over every parameter of the system. It would be pretty awesome to create a home server with your own "AI system" that is voice controlled and interactive with which you can also have the same amount of control, but the amount of time and programming involved would be rediculous for a single person. Manual control through an ipad is more then suffice in my opinion. That said, this system alone is so tedious and I am sure he has had his fair share of issues that he has encountered while instaling this; I respect that.

PS it's called technology people. It's not rich people showing off, It's people being interested in the evolution of technology that makes this video great. You have a car, you have a cell phone, you have a computer. Well at one time that was considered rich people showing off. I have an irrigation system that "runs on a timer" OOOH I'm rich and I am showing off. So I should have a spray bottle like these boneheads because I don't want to show off. Oh, I also have a avatar, I;m a rich guy showing off. Your telling me that it's not the most amazing thing to walk in a room and have the room set itself for you. Of course it is. A car starter is amazing. Do you have one? Your lazy if you do because you should go outside in the freezing cold to start it yourself. Why do people need to knock down the work of others. Insecurity is the root of all evil. You have to prove your better. You have to make sure everyone knows you know more. You have to make even more people hate you. If you spend time knocking this person, I guarantee you do it to everyone and I can only imagine you are not a liked person. Of course you will disagree because you are not aware of the people that don't like you because you only care about yourself. If you cared about others, you wouldn't try to hurt them. Oh one last question, how many hits did your last post get? NOTHING! Great Job Jersagfast. Keep them coming. I wanna show off a little more.

As an electrician. I see this type of High Tech electrical work done in houses sometimes. It's awesome for about 5-10 years, until someone comes out with a new technology that makes all this work look like a giant waste of time. In a couple years you might be able to install a small device at your electrical panel, and control everything from your smartphone. If you enjoy the engineering process of creating your own systems then go for it, otherwise save your money and wait for a company to do this research and development for you

I am amazed at the quality and workmanship of this system. The wiring is complicated, but the interface is simple. I do think that the HAI touch screen is outdated. I like the Control4 and Crestron Touchscreens a lot more, although they are most likely more expensive. For that matter, the iPad is fine with me, like wall mounting it or recessing it into the wall.

Genius I wish he would do an entire series from the ground up, of how to do this. I do not mean just graze over it I mean into the nitty gritty I wish to make a house like this hell 1/10th of this would be fine. I would however be an old man by the time I finish, wonder what his background is, I suspect EE, but maybe not. I do wish to know the cost but right now I just am awed that he along did this.

Man I just did most of this in my house for a whole lot less money and hassel. A Zwave controller, some zwave thermostats, light switches an alarm module and your in business. Added a couple IP cameras. I changed my garage light switch to an ocupancy sensor for 25 bucks. It turns on an off when i walk in and out and works great.

The main advantage for this system over for example SmartThings is that you are not relying on servers: No one is monitoring you without you knowing. So for privacy: Big plus. The setup/ wiring of this: NIGHTMARE. Bruce: If you wire correctly (and implement correct breakers) this is the way to go over Echo/ Smarthubs or whatever system there is, heavily depending on servers

Just because I works does not mean that it's a good job. @ 2:47 "Power is always messy. Especially when you're . . . me" It doesn't have to be messy and it shouldn't be. Quality workmanship/wiring is a requirement of reliability and serviceability. However, you have a lot going on here and I would love to be this knowledgeable about automation.

There are nice people and idiots. I love how these people post negative things about this guy. Just for fun, I wanted to see what you negative people put up on how you would do it and it was exactly what I thought. NOTHING. At least the guy gave me something to think about. What have you done. NOTHING. You spend time knocking this guy on how bad his wires are and bla bla bla but yet you don't have anything up to show me how NEAT your instillation is or how great your system is. Anyway Jersafast, I think its insane that you did this. I was thinking how the hell you got all this equipment. Can you put up a document on google+ and share it so we can see where you get all this equipment and how you wired it all. Your great. Thanks for the help.

pretty sick, if you hooked up some of the functions to a raspberry pi you could run a web server on the raspberry pi and port-forward it. Then you could view the cameras and such from your phone or something. wouldn't be dangerous either, you could probably set up some kind of recognition system. Either looking at the MAC or IP of your phone.

Any way you can do a video on how these products are installed? I'd love to learn more about the way they are wired and the amount of time and labor involved in this project. It looks like a great system, and I'm sure you've done most or all of it yourself. Very good video so far, I just don't know enough about the "behind the scenes" of home automation to fully grasp it. What outdoor sensors (occupancy and/or motion) did you use for detecting people outside? And what wiring is required (e.g. CAT5e okay)? I have 2 locations I would like to add movement detection. These lead to my backyard. I'd like to know if/when motion is sensed and turn the lights on/up (between dusk/dawn). So a few things: 1) Motion/occupancy sensor that works outside? 2) Best place for mounting (center of walkway (180-degree detection?) or on one end pointing the other way? 3) What wiring is required (e.g. CAT5e, etc.)?

As much as I appreciate all of the hard work you've put into this. There are far more easier (for the inclined) and cheaper solutions. Additionally, custom software would provide far more flexibility. Another thing I'd definitely get rid of is all of the "techie" terms for being wife/family approved. Most products (home automation in general) feels "out of reach" to the general consumer because it isn't newbie friendly yet and there's honestly no reason not to be. "Config"?? Configuration? Sure.. Why not call it Settings with a little bit smaller of a font? Basically a more friendly software UI in general. THAT's what sells a consumer. (Industrial design background; Can't help it) Instead of running the trunk of cables, I'd probably do a dedicated ethernet switch and use PoE (power over ethernet) + DPLC (digital power line communication) embedded devices with custom firmware MCUs. Each PCB would have to be custom created for a specific use case but that's the whole point in home automation. Basically, I don't like the idea of a "central" point of failure. Each device should act as a separately running device while still being networked into some sort of communication layer between other devices. Think of your light switch acting as it's own secured server, communicating through a variety of secure protocols. (Just in case your network gets hacked or someone does manage to break into the house and get access to your equipment and lines) On a positive note: Thank you for breaking the pre-conceived notion of "home automation voice control". Home automation should be just that. AUTOMATING your home to fire and forget things. For example, have your coffee ready to go for you in the morning. Or to feed your dog from a dispenser every day at a certain time. Walk into a room and the lights come on automatically. Turn off the television after a certain time limit when the room is unoccupied. The list goes on.

First of all, that'd be called a "black hat" hacker, not a red hat hacker. Red Hat is a Linux distro (Fedora is based off Red Hat Linux as far as I know). Second of all, a DDoS attack requires multiple computers. You can trigger it from one computer, but you need to have a zombie net basically (bunch of peoples computers which got infected with a virus you distribute). As well, a DDoS attack is not a type of hack, all you're doing is sending so much data the computer hangs or crashes.

Great video! I your automation scheme. You mentioned that you can control macros within macros. This really impressed me, but I was wondering if you have any fail-safes in place. The system seems like it can do unlimited tasks, could this cause any negative effects? Like, if you were able to program a motor to run continuously... it could potentially burn out or start a fire.

Is it me, or is this just a little bit dated? - My house we all have macs, or iphones. everything is on wifi. If I need to contact someone, I don't use an intercom, I phone them, or facetime them. we have a backup server, and everyone's stuff is backed up. All our heating is individually room controlled, which turns on /off at set times in the day.... there are no wires there are no panels, etc. We don't watch TV in general, but there is iplayer, and netflix which always available anywhere, and easy enough to plug a computer into the TV using HDMI.

That's the beauty of customization. Whoever lives in that home, should have it setup exactly as they like it, and not how some "Home Automation Companies" decides it should be. If you work in HA, you should know the term "The system works for you, and not the other way around" I would have done certain different as well, but it's his house, and that's how he wants it. Besides, it takes some nerves coming on here, and saying it's a perfect example of how not to do it. That was a BS statement.
