Your comment made me wonder if there's a high percentage of introverts in the sport. School and most workplaces are structured in favor of extroverts but in racing it's the driver, the car and the road. You don't have to talk to people all that much except when you're not on the track doing your real job. When engine, tires, suspension etc are uppermost in your mind, someone sticking a mic in your face asking questions must look like an invader from another planet.

But in f1 or any motor sport the "couches" are actually called race engineers, who give the driver information and orders that may be "let your team mate pass" "slow down to save your tyres" or tell them to change the tyres, and then there is the team strategist which tell the race engineer when to change the tyres.
