No she's not Nigerian, neither should we prop her up as being one. Most of these people with Nigerian names whose successes we are eager to appropriate have not a single link to Nigeria more than their parents being from there. Most were not born in Nigeria, and even more importantly, were not trained by Nigeria. Before you think this is me casting aspersions on these amazing people who have found successes, may i say it's not. Rather, it's a sensitization for us to remain in the consciousness of the impediments that this country constantly shoves in our way. It's a call to realize that when the day comes when your dreams come true, you're a product of who and what made you, regardless of ancestry, regardless of attestation on paper. It's ironical that the Nigerian government is the first to jump on the successes of those "Nigerians" in diaspora while shamelessly disregarding that these same people would have been worse off had they remained in Nigeria, let down by their own government constantly beating down on creativity directly as exemplified in their headless war against social media and indirectly as typified by their systematic weaponization of poverty, illiteracy, social injustice and rudderless leadership. We cannot give them the satisfaction. Is it not a slap on our collective face as Nigerians when the government hastily invite global icons such as Anthony Joshua and Israel Adesanya, or even the more Nigerian Grammy-winning Burna Boy, to the den of sin that is the Aso Villa to claim ownership of the greatness they never helped create. In that moment, it does bother them that a few kilometers from their satanic safe space, a boy is hawking during school hours, another playing football on a makeshift pitch with no single grass in sight, yet another like - like I once had to do - is sitting on the window of what is supposed to be a classroom writing a final exam. Again, I dare say, we cannot let them. We cannot let them to display the lucky ones who got away as their shinning new object, an object they didn't assemble, and even more tragic, an object they object sought to destroy.
