I remember when I was a kid once when Madden had to do Play by Play for 2-3 downs while Pat S. was having a coughing fit. Too bad that broadcast has never surfaced. If it happened today it would’ve been on the Internet in a heartbeat.

What Mr. Michaels pointed out, near the end of the interview, regarding Mr. Madden's knowledge and intelligence, and there being no concern about inadvertently taking him into a topic for which he would be out of his depth, is very well said. There are only so many people that are that skilled at what they do, such that you can trust their ability (spontaneously) with total confidence, whether in sports, music, or you name it. Inspiring...

if you ever get the chance, i HIGHLY recommend you listen to ESPN 30 for 30 Podcast edition's episode on John Madden and how the Madden video game series came to be even if you're not a gamer that's not a problem. the episode is really more about John Madden and why he was the PERFECT person for that game. the dude was insanely knowledgeable and blunt about football. i don't want to spoil too much but there's a section where he flat out tells the producer, "if this game is not going to be as close to real football as possible, i'm not putting my name on it." it was that attention to detail that made that game worth millions

Madden was really great, but Madden and Michaels were great together as well.

They weren't very good together. It was really awkward for the first several years, and then they finally loosened up a bit........but John Madden and Pat Summerall were legendary, and Al, Frank and Dan were the Best team, when they were together.............Madden & Summerall Sundays, and then Al, Frank and Dan on Monday Night Football, babyyyyyyyyyyy

i didn't mind Madden and Michaels. i thought they worked really well over time but yeah i agree, the peak was Summerall and Madden. Dick Enberg over at NBC is often overlooked as a great football commentator and he was one of the best too back in the day

Loved John Madden.

Fans never would have known the sound a football makes when hitting a goal post nor would anyone had ever enjoyed a Turduckin without John Madden. Anyone who doesn't believe me deserves a real slobberknocker. Just sayin'😎👍

Favorite JM take is as he recounts, as a youth, eating (sharing) "bights" with his friend sharing an ice-cream cone. Competitive personified.

Compare that w/ his current cohost today, Kirk Herbstreit, and you see the difference in commentating. Kirk is a great football analyst but a poor conversationalist compared to John Madden.

It's more that they're two generations apart and don't know each other.
