Lyrics:
The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I bowed my head and I cried
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me to love another
You have shattered all of my dreams
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
Please don't take my sunshine away

Just brilliant. . The original song was done in major chords whereas the DS plays it in A minor. This is a Depression era song. It's also a Prison song about a guy in stir only having this memory of this woman to keep him going. He has nothing but this memory and a Dear John letter would leave him with nothing. The use of the Cello is brilliant in enveloping us with the feeling of terrible sadness and loneliness. Thanks guys. Stay safe

Only just seen this. I said goodbye to my four-legged best friend of 17 years two weeks after this video came out. When we first met I'd sing to her to calm her (and me!) down, and one of the few things I knew (and she liked) was 'You are my Sunshine'. I only knew the cutest verses from the Muppet Show. This version is raw, and full of grief and rage and sadness, and it absolutely rips into me. It would have been selfish as all hell to wait any longer, I always promised she'd not be in pain and I made damn sure I was there until the end. I'm hurting though. Goodnight Summer, it was a damn honour and I miss you like crazy.

In 1938, my grandfather proposed to his first wife by singing this song to her while she was out in a field in rural Arkansas picking peas. Upon hearing about this, all his friends laughed at him & asked him why he'd buy the cow when he could get the milk for free. He married her anyway. They moved to Los Angeles. Fast forward 5 years. When he returned home from fighting in WWII, she answered the door, 8 months pregnant & speechless (what could she say?) A man walked up behind her & asked, "Can I help you?" Without missing a beat, my grandfather said, "I'm her husband & I'm just here to pick up my things." The man opened the door for him, he went inside & gathered his belongings, & before he left he shook the man's hand & told him, "good luck." Then he walked away. True story. Her name was Ruthie.

I'm guessing he was away fighting for longer than 8 months? Wow. That REALLY sucks. Your grandfather handled it with grace, and she lost a good man. Still, one woman's unfaithfulness is no reason to swear off marriage, like your grandfather's friends seemed to think (telling him he's stupid to marry?). After all, plenty of husbands have been unfaithful, too. My granddaddy brought his mistress into my pregnant grandmother's home, "to help her cook for the fieldhands, since she's struggling with her pregnancy and three children ten and under." The mistress couldn't make a sandwich. But she WAS three months further along in HER pregnancy than my grandmother's pregnancy. Grandmother did all the cooking, while the mistress did all the childcare, because "Divorce is a sin." They split up later on, anyway, and people in the town blamed HER. Apparently, a good woman can CONTROL a bad man and keep him from going wild, and if he has a dozen kids running around town without his name, well, that's on HER for not being a good enough wife to satisfy him. UGH! This song, a tale of love and betrayal and obsession and jealousy and possessiveness, and NOBODY IS RIGHT, HERE, can go both ways. That's why it's so darn good. Everyone who's actually LIVED for 2 or 3 decades, can relate to it, in some way.

Original intension is hard to pin down. The earliest recording by the Pine Ridge boys in 1939 seems to me to be pretty standard tempo and feeling with the addition of yodeling at the beginning and end of the song. The next version also from 1939 by the Rice Brothers Gang is listed on the label as a Fox trot. It swings with "happy" embellishments. Since there is a good argument to be made for Paul Rice being the author of the song, the original intent is murky at best. It was clearly out in world at that point with very different versions.

Well most people are only really familiar with the refrain of it, which sounds pretty cheerful it you take it out of context. But if you actually pay attention to the lyrics it's a dark, sad, mournful song. It's about a person who is in pain. If I ever hear it sung cheerfully again it's going to sound really weird. The song has a lot of similarities to Hank Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," enough that you could almost accuse Davis of plagiarism of the Hank Williams hit. Only problem with that hypothesis is that Davis's song predates Williams's song by nine years. They are similarly mournful and describe a person suffering toxic loneliness. For people who don't know, the song was written and recorded by Hon. Jimmie Davis, Governor of Louisiana, my home. And if that doesn't tie the knot on Louisiana being the most musically inspired state in the Union, I don't know what does. You listen to blues? How about jazz? You're welcome.

@@patrickscalia5088 @Patrick Absolutely. I think most people are familiar with the re-written lyrics which were turned into a lullaby. What's interesting about the first few versions of the original song (and it's been covered by hundreds of singers) was that they made it sound so BOUNCY. The very first version has a kind of swing music/country music sound. Even Gene Autry's version is kind of cheerful. I don't know if Johnny Cash was the first singer to cover it with the melancholy air it deserves, but I like his version, too. If you look up the lyrics to all 6 stanzas, the last one basically runs, "If only you'll come back, I'll say everything was all my fault, just come back." The song is pretty desperate-sounding, with the singer kind of abasing themselves. What I love about this version is, by tweaking the notes a little bit, you go from desperate to "If you leave me for the other guy, I WILL STAB YOUR EYES OUT." It's very "stabby." That sure beats bouncy and upbeat every time.

Eh, country yes. Bluegrass, no. The song was written by the Hon. Jimmie Davis, governor of Louisiana. It's more of a country crossover hit that got a lot of airplay. I love bluegrass music but one thing Louisiana does not have is a bluegrass tradition in our music. Don't get me wrong, Louisiana is the absolute mother lode of music in this country but bluegrass is still a tradition that's not endemic. It was originally recorded and is usually sung in such an upbeat manner that if you don't pay attention you come away thinking it's a nice song about why a guy loves his girl so much. But any reading of the lyrics shows that it's actually the mournful lament of a very lonely man. Finally, someone has recorded the song in such a way that the rendition matches the writing. Brilliant. But nothing special for the Dead South. Everything they do is brilliant.

One of the things about this that always gets me is the masterful arrangement itself - the lead is making the most of a voice that tends to have a ragged edge on it, and the harmonies tear at that, putting a thread of obsessive, bleeding insanity under the lyrics. The banjo and the cello carry a rhythm that feels like it's dragging, just a little, like mud under what you think is the tempo.

I love how mothers sing this to their children yet it's a really dark and sad song if you go past the verse that everyone knows.

@@smb7647 the 26 verses that exist to this song are really really dark and depressing. Look up the history. It was written my a southern governor who lost his wife to another man. Verses of suicidal thoughts, threats of violence, and fill on begging for mercy. It's not the happy song the majority of the world holds it to.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a Lullaby that isnt morbidly depressing...considering so many lullabies were were sung as sort of "going away" songs during a period of time when you never knew if your loved ones might not awaken the following morning.

@@djmarklaw1234 Where can I find this?? I learned the chorus in what 1st grade 'musical class' in idk '93-94?? & they made it such a 'happy tune'... yet all the versions I've heard with actual verses are so dark and sad... this one absolutely nails it I think! -- Which got me looking, and I cannot find any history or even any actual 'original'... please post a link!

My mother used to sing this to me as a child, I learned it on the guitar when I could first play... Now nearly 22 y/o I can truly say this is brilliant and she agrees greatly

Holy Fuck this was an absolutely brilliant rendition! The entirety of the music blends so well and must've taken one hell of a lot of work to make sound that tight and melodic. I just can't say enough nice things about how well this song was arranged!
