When you possess Dixit with several card decks expansions, getting Stella which will also benefit from all those expansions is a great sales pitch.

you should definitely make a video about games with abstract cards and beautiful designs like dixit, ensemble, one key etc. I would like to learn more about that kind of games where its all about the cards design :)

Played Dixit a few times and I kinda liked it, so if this one here feels a little better then I guess I'll get it someday. Love games with abstract illustrations such as this one, or even Mysterium. And we even have another game here called Nouvelles contrées (New lands) which is a game involving books and illustrated bookmarks to play with. Such great picks.

Yeah, that's it. That's the reference and the metaphor.

Hi! Amazing review as always! My go to review guys! ❤ I had one question I was hoping you or someone in the comments could answer for me, could you play regular Dixit with the Stella game? In essence, is Stella potentially a 2-in-1, meaning that I could choose to play Stella or regular Dixit with the components provided? Thank you in advance! 😊

That's a great question! The answer is "almost." Dixit has cards, a game board, rabbit player meeples and 6 tokes per player. The board and the rabbits are not necessary,, as they are just meant to keep score, but the 1-6 tokens are. They are how you vote and a pretty essential part of Dixit because without them, to make players "lock in" their votes. Straight out of the box, Stella does not have any of those things I mentioned, BUT you can keep track of everyone's score on a piece of paper to replace the rabbits and the game board, and maybe make cutout 1-6 tokens per player and then it's 100% playable Dixit! So technically the answer should be no, but with a little bit of effort it quickly becomes yes!

I’m getting this for a new set of Dixit cards and the board, which I plan to use for a custom version of the original.

This game reminds me of another game called Twins (or Pluckin' Pairs), where you're matching pictures instead of picture and word. Scratches the same itch and scores similarly.

0:50 "Stella" is latin for "Star"

Zee's comment near the end about how the original Dixit has the challenge of "threading the needle", which can frustrate some players does happen ... and when it does, it can make Dixit a hit or miss experience. With Stella Dixit, you have an easier time predicting the experience. But, it also is not as intense as the original game. So there's that. I like both games.

About Dixit scoring. There was an old 80's-90's Finnish gameshow called Kymppitonni (just means 10 000, don't know why), where there are nine guests and one of them tries to get others to guess something... With Dixit scoring, so the fewer right, the better, but if no one or all guess it's a big penalty. The thing is, I've always thought that the show must have been the Finnish version of Hollywood Squares, which has the same kind of 9x9 wall of guests setup, but APPARENTLY, according to Wikipedia, that's some kind of tic-tac-toe game, and now I don't know where the Kymppitonni rules come from.

Klaus Teuber's 'Barbarossa' (SdJ 1988) is the oldest board game I can think of that had the match-some-but-not-all scoring that Dixit and Stella use.

Everything has a universe now because it's easier to market a sequel/spin-off than a wholly original idea.

This seems to be unnecessarily complicated for a game which is essentially match a word to a picture and a party game apparently

I LOVE Zee's game explanations, and reviews, but even he couldnt save this one. I dont get Stella.....its boredom in a box. I almost fell asleep while he was laying the game out....hehe.

Non of the people I played with found Stella boring. I think you should give it a try.

Agreed, this looks like an unnecessarily complicated version of Scattergories with pictures. I'll stick with Dixit and Detective Club.
