@@lizmuschinski976True, he was also an alcoholic for most of his life, just like his father, and grew up in an emotionally troubling environment. Joanne also knew him better than anybody else, knew about his affair (probably had her own along the way), they both fought a lot, but also fought hard to overcome all of the issues coming their way, and their admiration and love for each other was still very much visible when both were in their 70's and 80's. They made it, and imo, it's even more admirable considering all of the hardships they had to go through. I mean, people act like there can only be this one perfect great love and happy marriage, in which both partners are happy all the time, and perfect. Going through up and downs, and still making it out in the end, that's what counts. Paul and Joanne were soulmates for sure.

Two personal stories about Newman: 1.) My mom met him back in 65' on a movie set. She had my sister with her, who was only months old. My mom is 5'9" and she said he was identical to her height. He patted my sister on the head and said, "what a cute baby!" My mom told him she really enjoys his work (Newman hated people gushing over him) and was calm. He thanked her and went on his own way. 2.) Had a friend who does lawns and he said one of them was Newman's. One day, while landscaping he met Newman, who took him to his "man cave." He was "one of the guys" and hand a beer with him. My friend said he was the coolest star he ever met.

@@robinholbrook6576 Hilarious and great line ! Also "Cool Hand Luke" was a great movie ! I still binge watch it. Besides a great performance by Newman and his great looks, Luke stood for me as a great symbol of rebellion against harsh, abusive authority and the struggle to be who you are, rather than follow the crowd or be silenced by oppression.

He's really quite an amazing fellow. And there's something about Cavett's interview style that gets down a layer deeper than Carson ever did. Not that Carson was trying to go there--the master knew his audience--but the Tonight Show always stayed on the surface whereas there's something edgy and existential about the exchanges on dc. It makes them eminently watchable decades later.

He had the non-profit started from his salad dressing. Proceeds went to charity. Everything in their product line was and still is top quality. Was it always in his heart to give and God blessed him w/ such good looks and talent in advance, or did he create the charity because he was blessed with such good looks and talent? Either way, he was a great talent and role model who therefore did a great service.
