It happened outside his bedroom on the landing. He would have been dead if he'd been lying in bed, he wouldn't have been able to fight. The papers did say that one wound punctured his lung, but a lot of the others were just as horrific. The man was slashing him everywhere. George's wife hit him again and again on the head with this brass lamp, but he just wouldn't stop. There was blood everywhere." Charlie Watts, The Rolling Stones

All talk shows do pre-interviews, most of the time. They basically outline what the topics are going to be, and rehearse it. Obviously, sometimes they’ll get inspired during the interview and get off topic and improvise. But talk shows today have very limited time, they’re seeking to entertain people, and a conversation like this one wouldn’t sell. Today’s public is too accustomed to gullible and shallow conversations to enjoy a talk show like this one.

1:53 - 2:10 George Harrison's summary of his conversation with Lennon ("hi,hello"-"hi") is brilliant. The only problem I have with George is the fact that while he condemned 'materialism', he was, in reality, very 'materialistic'. He owned a number of mansions and vacation homes in different countries, had a fleet of cars, also a number of race cars and travelled the world like a wandering prince. Lennon was the same. He claimed he was a 'working class hero' which he certainly wasn't. He no sooner moved into the Dakota when he spent millions buying out the next unit, knocking down a few walls and doubling the size of his own apartment. He pledged the profit from several of his albums to various causes and charities but never followed through. At least McCartney and Ringo were never hypocritical about their vast wealth. They enjoyed it, spent it and never tried posing as 'common people' although you could say that Ringo was 'common' but he couldn't help that. He was just being himself.

There's different sides to everyone. I read the book Patty Boyd wrote, "Wonderful Tonight " she discusses the affairs George had especially with Maureen Starr, Ringo's first wife. This ended their marriage. She, famously went on to marry Eric Clapton. He also had multiple affairs and drank/used drugs. She pretty much married the same person twice.
@mawel19555 жыл бұрын
@@CR-qp3dc I'm not sure but there may be a reason for George's affair with Maureen. At that time Ringo was drinking heavily and being physically abusive to her, beating her up several times. While that was happening, George began to suspect Patty was in love with Eric Clapton and may have had an affair with him. Never mind that George had already had numerous affairs himself but what was alright for him was not alright for his wife. I think both George and Maureen turned to each other for solace and it quickly became physical.

In the wake of the glorious Beatles: Get Back on Disney+, I certainly see why George wanted to leave. You often heard that he was stifled by the great Lennon/McCartney, but to hear him basically say he has so much material that he just HAS to release it, was impactful. Cool thing about The Beatles is that they left at the PERFECT time, right at the end of 1969---truly children of the 60's. Their popularity didn't wane, they didn't release any lackluster struggle albums, (lol, some of them kept that for their solo careers); The Beatles' Discography is impeccable! Like true performers, The Beatles left us WANTING MORE!

The part that really sticks out to me after watching it is in the studio when Paul says something like " Why are you using that guitar? Isn't the Rickenbacker much better?" and George was just like "I like this one." Like he had to explain himself, or as if it wasn't good enough for Paul......
@Glitch4Twitch3 жыл бұрын
@@danielcarter3928 Yea I feel you. George seemed to have a bit of a snide/surly way of responding to Paul, but again I really understand why. 1. Throughout the MAJORITY of the doc, Paul and John are talking to each other....George tries to get a word in, they kind of acknowledge him, then go back to their convo. 2. Rememba that scene where George tried to play "I, Me, Mine" for John? And john sarcastically said, "You know we're a Rock 'n Roll group?" I mean really? That's coming from the guy who was hellbent on making REVOLUTION 9! Yea, John was being a little jokey, but I feel the tone was genuine and typifies how he (and Paul) just big "brothered" George, and sent him off to play. John even remarked in a way like "Run off now" or something like that. This doc really helped me see what life must've been like for George. George was simultaneously a successful and struggling artist---wrap your head around that one! lol

@@danielcarter3928 Actually, Paul was asked why he wasn't using his Rickenbacker bass, and he said it was heavier than the Hofner. That being said, watching Get Back, one can see that Paul was the reason the band split up. George, at one point, is saying he wants to take time off to record his songs, he's ignored. Paul just kept pushing. Look at their post-Beatles careers, John had George and Ringo play for him sometimes, George had John and Ringo play sometimes, Ringo had John and George play for him occasionally. Paul had to start Wings. None of the ex Beatles ever played with Paul again until the Anthology sessions. McCartney is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, nevertheless, he was pushy. In the Get Back Disney+ show, Paul at one point says "You have to achieve something everyday." John says (paraphrasing him), "Paul, that's pretty hard to do."

What are you talking about? First of all, George has been on a lot of "greatest guitarists" lists over the years. He's not often in the top ten, but he is nevertheless a staple of those lists. Second, he did NOT make up most of the riffs. Paul and John did that; that's why they are the credited songwriters for most of the Beatles catalog. George's main role was to play the (usually) preconceived lead-guitar part and come up with solos. An exception to this would be something like "Hey Jude," where the song was written on piano and driven by that instrument. Yes, George came up with a guitar part for it, but it's a supplementary element within the song. He was in the band because he was a great technician; George butted heads with Paul and John more frequently in the band's later years because he wanted to contribute more than two songs to each album. John and Paul simply weren't having it because, as much as they loved George (and Ringo), that band was always intended to primarily be a vehicle for their songwriting.
@MotorHolmes3 жыл бұрын
@@WaitingtoHit Some inaccurate assumptions on the writing process. Check out the “Get Back” documentary for a feel of how the writing process worked. "No, the group had problems long before Yoko came along." Not many people wanted to believe that. They felt someone other than the four of them had to be of blame. I suppose if you want to blame anything, it was the death of Brian Epstein. He held them together despite their personalities conflicting. Then, they took a 3 month hiatus after 4 years of touring. Then, they came back for another 3 years before permanently breaking up in 1970.

Brian Epstein's death wasn't directly responsible for the break-up, only indirectly from the financial problems that arose following his death that seeped into the group's dynamic for the first time. Brian wasn't exactly the best manager to begin with. Because of his inexperience, he recklessly established specific companies to handle aspects of their career such as The Beatles Ltd, Harrisongs Ltd, Northern Songs Ltd, Subafilms Ltd, Seltaeb Ltd, etc. He decided against consolidation in meetings with EMI throughout January 1967 while negotiating a new recording deal and instead focused on tightening his grip on the 25% guaranteed to NEMS, his management company. The inefficient financial web that Epstein left in his wake (shareholders notwithstanding) would take decades of headaches and unpleasant business meetings to sort through. Of course, not all of this is his fault, as most of the damage could have been ameliorated had The Beatles not created Apple.

@@toxicturtle9077 True. They needed a proper manager who would put their foot down when the cracks started. They disagreed on many things which is why in the end George Martin refused to produce them anymore. It was a power struggle between Paul and John especially Paul pushing them his way. George just did what he was told and Ringo showed up until he didn't and they begged him to come back. They couldn't even agree on who would manage their finances. Klein was a massive mistake but the alternative was Paul's father in law and the other 3 weren't giving more power to Paul. Their squabbles were mainly financial. They were clueless how to do that or manage themselves. Even in a later interview, George Martin said that they needed a boss and direction. He references Magical Mystery Tour, where they planned nothing in advance and didn't even know to book rooms in hotels for themselves and their vast entourage. It was a mess. The hotel had not even been booked. They thought they could just get rooms on arrival. Then ofcourse the press got hold of it and were being a nuisance. So when George M quit them, Phil Spector was pulled in to produce Let It Be. Even Paul whinged about Spectors overproduction of some songs. Alas all good things end badly. But we can thank their breakup for the magnificent album that George made. They all persued their own ways and were famous and successful in their own right. They certainly changed my life and their place in history and their significance shall never be matched or repeated. Beatles forever. ✌❤

@@rosaworksrosaworks9410 Sorry that is a very naive statement especially in hindsight. George does not even agree with you there. Neither does Paul in many interviews. Ringo did his own thing and was always close to John after the Beatles. George lived with John and Yoko during the Imagine album recordings. Stop spreading idle gossipy stories perpetrated by the media. She was the media scapegoat. Truth is harder to believe that they simply went in different directions. Had the money problems pulling them apart not been an issue, they would have remained close.

noone may know for sure but paul & ringo but whenever we see the way yoko moves into the scenes for example one being when john does a song with chuck berry & yoko is included! yoko seems to over empathize her singing in attempt to mock the whole thing & its obvious it annoys CB!! using that situation as an example for how yoko may have been for the rest of johns professional life i can see how she could of been a huge variable, at least , in the beatles breaking up! watch the video im refering to & see for yourself!

The first and only time I lost bladder control laughing was whilst watching the stoning scene in 'The Life of Brian". A movie that George nearly bankrupted himself financing because no Hollywood studio would. That was George. A bloke who just wanted to help his friends in any way he could no matter the risk. When Patti left him for one of his best friends and a press guy asked him how it made him feel he was actually positive and said was glad she was with someone who he liked. He seemed almost to have figured out how to work through anger and bitterness quickly and move on to the next life experience with no regrets, a wry grin on his face and an open mind. Ahead of his time till the end. I find it hard to watch the Ringo interview where he visited George on his deathbed in Switzerland but could not stay long as he had to catch a flight to Boston as his daughter was having a major operation and George said " Want me to come with you" despite him being confined to bed 😢. A full life lived
