We ate this often in the days before we owned a fridge and my Mother would put almost anything that needed eating before it became uneatable, so bacon, sausage , liver kidney, plus the sliced pots and onions corned beef, we would eat it with a flat cake or a stotty.

I can't abide poncy recipes with poncy ingredients. Celeb chefs always on about "the best local ingredients.' Since I was a bairn 65 years ago, our dad's used to swap 'the best local ingredients ' from their gardens and chicken coups each weekend at their local pubs. Plus pretty flowers too. The chefs think it's something they've made trendy. How wrong!

That reminds me a lot of Stovies we make in Scotland, pretty much the same ingredients but cooked slightly differently - on the hob rather than in the oven, but likely equally as delicious! As an aside, I can't believe how quickly your channel is growing, it just goes to show how much of an appettite (no pun intended) there is for no frills home cooked food these days.

Lovely video. In the Yorkshire mining village where I was brought up we had food influences from all over the UK, brought in by mining families coming to work in the mine. As I remember it Pan Heggarty was a vegetarian dish of sliced potatoes, onions and cheese, sometimes cabbage. Your Pan Heckalty is more akin to the hot pot type dishes around Lancs, although usually made with lamb. My Dad's family originally from London area did something similar with potatoes, onions, sausages and peas, sometimes topped with cheese. It's remarkable how these recipes spread, using similar ingredients and good hearty filling meals. Thanks for the memories.😋

Hi, just made this, it gives an insane smell off as it cooks, really hearty and tasty my husband ate 2 bowls, I made it with a smoked gammon from Aldi and I just thought you should mention that gammons need soaking to remove salt, I can really appreciate how tasty this would be if it hadn't been so salty, unfortunately I couldn't source any bacon pieces in my area. I'm gonna try the egg and bacon pie next but think I'll wait until I find the bacon pieces. Thank you for this recipe ❤

My Mum used to make this and I've followed on for many years. If we had/have roast beef leftovers and it's not warm enough weather for thinly sliced beef and salad for example - this was and still is always the Winter Warmer. All ingredients and assembly the same - cold sliced roast beef if available - otherwise it's delicious with corned beef. I so get what you said about the smell when getting in from school Mandy. Wow! I’ve always called this corned dog hot pot, which I love. My panackalty consists of, sliced potatoes, onions and cheese with seasoning, no liquid, just grease the dish with beef dripping. I know that everyone has their own recipe of course, but I’m from Newcastle too. They are both equally delicious and the cheese one goes very crisp on top and bottom, and is a nice meat free option. I have continued the tradition of cooking like my mam did. Our Panakilty was with corned beef and sometimes the addition of bacon. My 'Southern ' family love my ' North East' baking/cooking. Sunderland used sausages. I watched your bacon and egg pie, too, which i also bake. I like to visit Bolams in Sedgefield when im home to buy Peach Melbas. Plus, i buy kidneys there as they're often not available here. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
