Michael Tomasello talks about “instrumental oughts” in his books about the evolution of morality. In this case, if a tribe, or community or nation (or even our species ) agrees on certain goals, then we can build “oughts” based on those shared goals. That seems to align with what you’re both talking about in this discussion.

I agree with Dr. Hopster. After all, if moral objectivity should be understood in terms of “mind-independence,” what tool could humans possibly use to access moral objectivity, when the only tool we have access to for such a thing is our minds?
