What a fascinating interview and even more relevant in light of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Extraordinary talent, charisma, charm, and stage presence. Such a loss for the world of opera, lovers of classical music, his colleagues, and his family and friends. He’s certainly the best baritone I’ve heard in my 61 years on earth. He’s an unparalleled performer whose brilliance and beautiful spirit we’ve missed so much since his death. Thanks for posting this interview. And his English was impressive.

'In order to sing, you have to fly' -- I knew as a very young child I could and wanted to sing, but I was both shy and my mother, who was mentally ill, said it was forbidden for me to sing. It was only in my 30s that I dared break free in that way, take some lessons just to free the tight constriction of fear, and only a few times did it work. But without proper training I was not as good as I could have been. The few times I did 'fly' [and it was like flying, it was such freedom and such joy when it was free -- you know when it's good, and just those few times it was good because I got out of my own way, away from the fear. And the audience was with me then, it was a joining together, and with no fear, but such joy. I am sad I never was allowed the training that might have led to being a singer when I was young. And could only overcome the fear occasionally later. Still, it is the most wonderful thing. Dmitri is easily the best singer I have ever heard because what he can do, his gift, is like no other.

I liked the interview, but what a bit disappointed he was not asked anything about his connection with Finnish singers, especially Karita Mattila. Did the interviewer know that he and Karita had both been winners in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition. In 1983, Mattila won the first Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Dimitri Hvorostovsky won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 1989 . There is a cute video of them singing together in Cardiff in 1989. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYa7maKmadxngsk

I like when he said "I workout, especially I'm a singer" I feel every body has to "workout and move" stay fit etc. Dmitri proved it, but towards the end, getting that brain tumor? I wonder aloud? Was any autopsy done to really find out? Was their some medication 💊 that started his 2 yr long brain cancer? Same thing happened to Muhammad Ali. A thyroid medication that weakened Ali before his fight with Larry Holmes? Just sayin' ?
