Emily Yates what does a parent do when a child is out of control like mine is. We feed her, cloth her, goes to a private school can go out and be with friends can have friends over. We don’t drink, we tell her everyday we love her, she’s in sports but she’s on social media hooking up with guys she doesn’t know. What do you do in this case?

I was 13 when I went to one of those "wilderness camps" I was in a group of 9-14 year olds at Trails Carolina. I experienced some shit there that haunts me to this day at 19 years old. I am currently a student at Baylor University and have succeeded in spite of my trauma. There are some thing s those wilderness camps dont want people to know as they would get shut down, like many already have. At Trails, I was strip searched at thirteen told nothing about what was happening to me, and slept in a trash bag under a tarp in the woods of the rocky mountains. We got a cup of beans a day, pooed and peed in one big hole, walked for miles up mountains a day with backpacks the same weight as the nine/ten year olds. One girl would pass out every day due to hyperventilation due to panic attacks, AND EXHAUSTION. My face was covered in sores and bug bites and the counselors would not send pic updates of me to my parents due to this. On my fifteenth birthday I spent there two girls ran off into the woods, we realized we all had pin worms due to improper sanitization and one girl tried to cut her wrists with rocks. THESE ARE little girls bounced from program to program because the get trauma after trauma and so they have behavioral issues naturally, and their parents have some money and dont want to deal with them. I have nightmares every other night even at 19 due to what I saw there at 14/15. If you are a parent FUCKING think before you do shit like that. Yes, I misbehaved and I snuck alchohol once when i was 15, but did any of us deserve what we saw there? no.

I got sent to a therapeutic boarding school in 2015. It was the worst experience of my life. I sometimes wake up in the middle tonight because I would have nightmares that I was sent back there or I was still there. It was such a painful and horrifying experience. They lie to parents and tell them we’re fine and make the place look fun. They told me to lie to people when asked where I was and the kept our phones in the office. We weren’t allowed to use computers and they only let us watch the same movies they already had. They wanted us cut off from the rest of the world. Please never send your kids to a therapeutic boarding school or a wilderness program. I genuinely hope that place gets shut down.

My friends is Jodi on this episode. She is a survivor along with so many that have been severely abused at these places. Thankfully we were able to see the signs after doing some online research after visiting the one that our oldest was admitted to about five years ago. We were able to get her out within 24 hours of being admitted. It wasn't easy though, getting the word out on these places is so important!

M Krauss wow i just responded to your comment above where you said your kid was at *a place* and after you dropped her off you did some internet research & had her out within 24 hours, which was difficult. Now it's your. "Friend" and you had another one of your kids committed to one of these torture camps 5yrs ago?? Friends can't go and get a minor released, so this was your second child you sent away for "behavior"? It seems to be your behavior that is the problem!!

You fucking moron how could you as a parent allow yourself to be deceived & manipulated into doing such a thing? YOU ARE THE ONE IN CHARGE OF YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY. I was taken to one of these places when I was 14 (im 39 now) I was there for almost 9 months. Everything they are saying about these place is 100% TRUTH. These places are a nightmare. To be honest, calling it a "nightmare" doesn't even do it justice. Words just can't adequately describe how horrible these places are. It blows my mind that these places are even still around. Its unbelievable that these places are allowed to exist as they are, with practically ZERO oversight to guarantee the humane treatment and care of the kids who are there. What happens in these places is TORTURE, in every sense of the word.

There''s a reason why that bottle was vinegar and not bleach. It's because it was not her time to die. I have a child who has given me a hard time for 7 years (now an adult). After exhausting every resource in my community to help him and the family through it all and nothing work I had thought about sending him to a job corp center. But, before I make any decisions I do my research. I read reviews by both past participants and staff and found that it would have been an absolute mistake. Another thing that kept me from sending him was remembering sitting across the table from him at a juvenile center and hearing him say he wished I would just give up on him. I told them that moment that I will NEVER give up on him. I haven't yet and I'm still not going to. The only difference between then and now is that he is an adult now so if he gets himself into trouble, he will not have me by his side because the court will no longer require at least one parent to be present. They would give him no choice but to work through it on his own and change his life, but he has to want to.

I'm surprised and saddened that the very FIRST offshoot of Synanon, called CEDU (Charles E. Dederich University) is not mentioned. Founded by Synanon alum Mel Wasserman, it is considered the template for the Therapeutic Boarding School industry, and used Synanon's cult doctrines as their philosophical base. Many of the practitioners of this "industry" today are former staff members of CEDU & it's sister program RMA (Rocky Mountain Academy). I am a survivor of CEDU/RMA, and most of these staff-members were untrained, unaccredited & unqualified drifters, marginal teachers &/or former students who (having drunk the cool-aid) were unable to function outside of this abusive and isolated environment. And to any/all commenters who spout off "well, if the kids weren't 'bad' to begin with, they wound't have deserved to be sent there"... I assure you, NO ONE "deserved" to be put into a cult like that. I needed a wake-up call, sure, but even a military academy (with possible hazing & bullying) would have been better than one of these "behavior modification programs". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CEDU

Our boot camp in Fairfield County Ohio got shut down for cruelty to children. Grown men beating up teens and breaking bones. One kid had a broken arm for 3 days before they finally took him to the hostpital. One kid broke half his teeth because they forced him to bite down on a rock as hard as he could. They didn't think he was biting hard enough so they helped him, breaking his teeth. I think those were the two straws that busted the entire thing wide open. They all went to prison for cruelty to children. 1990's

The legitimate programs that actually support teen recovery are less sensational, and get less press. These programs are not for casual drug use, or misbehaviors typical of teens. They are supportive of teens who are in danger of hurting themselves or others, and should be a last resort for families. The key is, how do you judge a program, how do you work with your teen and what do you judge as a successful outcome?

i went to wilderness and after an rtc. it wasn't as bad but it was still horrible. i was woken up i the middle of the night and taken out of my home by 2 hired men to take me away. and what made it worse was that my parents hired them. i was flown to utah where i got scanned people took blood, and other tests and they strip searched me. taking everything that i was waring, even my hair tie. i was sent out after a long drive to the middle of nowhere. i was then refused a phone call with my parents. i begged them to ask my parents to let me talk to them, and they wouldn't even tell them. my parents had signed me over to them as "guardians" i didnt get a phone call for 5 weeks we hiked a lot, did a lot of shit like that. tbh the shitty living conditions weren't the bad part. we didnt get any eating utensils so we would have to carve3 our own or eat with hands. you had to be within sight of a staff at all times, and you could never talk to any other kid without staff listening. if u were caught having a private conversation you could be punished from being kicked out of the group (forced to spend hours by yourself with a staff watching you at all times, you pace and scream and cry and its horrible) or have phone calls taken away. at one point i got food poisoning and i was vomiting and in terrible pain for 6-10 hours (we didnt have watches and they wouldn't tell us the time so idk how long for sure) when i got to the ER i was barely awake. i pretty much passed out and was given with an iv for the next few days. constantly going to the bathroom to vomit. 2 staff were with me in the hospital room with me at all times. i got so dehydrated from losing so much fluids that my kidneys started to shut down. after 1 day there could have been permanent damage and in 2-3 days more and i would have died, i have looked hard online for communities where i can talk to other people who have been through this but i can't find it so hopefully there will be some people here

Unfortunately, even some doctors who overlook a CBT program like this has historically demonstrated and have proven what they are capable of with unethical research such as the little Albert study, the monster study, the mk ultra study, and the Stanford prison study to only name a few which there is no Belmont Report set of ethical guidelines to develop nor implement into their standard of care. To hear the tactics used in such camps of behavior and thought reform are the identical tactics implemented towards victims in domestic abuse and the relationships including marriages which end up in early mortality. The similar tactics to simply "break" a person down then develop the new conditioned belief system and behavior is not justified. No abuses should ever be tolerated and unfortunately, what programs like these do is groom and normalize our future generation to seek out and subconsciously believe they deserve domestic violence including confusing that such abusive tactics is a form of love. Not a good example to teach the children.

Psychiatric hospitals are not worse than this. They have windows, they have visiting hours, they have beds, meals, and therapy. Unless you went to some sort of prison type mental hospital in a foreign country then you can shut the hell up about it being worse. Of course awful things happen in mental hospitals and we need better mental health programs and treatments but the people in this video went through actual torture. Every single day they went through physical abuse, starvation, rape, emotional abuse, neglect, etc. Mental hospitals in the 1800s were like this and it’s terrible to imagine, but modern day mental hospitals in first world countries can’t compare.

How about the abuse that these kids put parents through? When can we raise the white flag and yell out "I surrender please help"? Is this a program out there for parents who are at the brink of a mental breakdown from the abuse of their bratty children? Its more than just physical- the system we live in gives parents practically no ways to punish these bratty kids. The right approach is to give them therapy only then they laugh in our faces when we can't touch them. Sometimes I want child services to get involve and take my kids away. Maybe I am a bad parent because as hard as I try- I am never good enough. I can never do anything right. I just work to provide a roof over their heads, put food on the table, have medical insurance so I can take them to the dr if they are sick. Give them each a bed to sleep in- all I want from them is to go to school, do their daily chores, be respectful to others, do not lie and steal and cheat. The government's hands are tied with real abused and neglected children that they don't have room for my spoil brats... *sigh* true story... when my 13 year old daughter tried to commit suicide because I took her phone away after finding photos of her exposing herself... Yeah.... You tell me how to parent these kids cause I'm about to stroke out, dye, and leave them orphans.. Maybe I will just run away from home and fake my death so I wouldn't have to keep being their pitch of a mother. *true story* my 13 year old son was caught smoking not once, not twice, but many many times and still lied to his dad and I. He took beers from the fridge and claim to know nothing. I have this pressure spot on my back towards the left should blade- it is hurting right now and its hard for me to breathe. Seriously- I will probably die due to all this stress my kids are causing me. Stroke out and hopefully it will just take me. I don't want to be a vegetable.

there are different ways to help your children then sending them to these disgusting places- plus so many kids that go to these places didn't even do bad things, many of them just struggled with depression or something- there are SO MANY more solutions to helping your kids rather than putting them in this hell hole

As a survivor, I assure you while I was a bit of a loser, being subjected to 2+ years of torture is not anything I or any other of my fellow inmates deserved. Try a 24 hour brainwashing session or two, or maybe a month in isolation w/12 hours a day hauling rocks before snapping off such sad clichés.

Leah Acres: Are you fucking stupid? Kids are sent there and they go through extreme physical abuse, torture, rape, starvation, emotional abuse, neglect, and more. It drives those poor kids and teens to commit suicide. How is that discipline? That’s straight up abuse.
