Lucky you. That must have been one heck of an experience. Back in the mid-70s my mum had an album of the Dubliners performing live and used to play it. You could sense how well-lubricated everyone was. The first song on it was Black Velvet Band, and it also had Seven Drunken Nights on it among many others!

RIP both Ronnie Drew (1934-2008) and Shane MacGowan (1957-2023). Two wonderful vocalists of two great folk Irish bands who will be remembered forever. This performance just sees the Dubliners and Pogues enjoy a good laugh on stage with a modern Irish jig still played every 17th March today.

I keep revisiting this because I just love this performance, there are so many details I like. The fact that one of the lead singers is smoking and drinking at the start of the song, that one dude in the white sweater jamming out in the back, the guy with the piercings going crazy on the flute. No choreography whatsoever, everyone just doing their own thing, it's great.

It brings a tear to my eye, a tune that Donny Rovers play before every match. I hope this version will be played at the next home game, A sad loss.

Back when I was leaving Dublin! The Pogues were just starting. I saw them once but I tended to be more of a Planxty, Chieftains kind of girl, but I came to appreciate them as time passed by. Rest in Peace, Shane’s. Ireland will long miss you.
