The fact that neither of you noticed that Krillin has no nose until it was specifically said to your face really just goes to show how well Krillin is drawn from a design standpoint. Everything about his design meshes so well together, you don't even notice that he's missing the nose until it's stated outright. Although even then, considering the overall atmosphere of the original Dragon Ball, that bit during the tournament was probably meant as more of a passing visual gag, than something to be taken very seriously.

One thing people miss when bringing up Krillin’s mistake: he didn’t know Cell was gonna get a power up from absorbing 18, Cell’s transformations being linked to the androids was revealed after Piccolo and 17 fought, and at no point did anyone who knew have the chance to tell Krillin about it. All he knew is that 18 and 16 weren’t interested in wanton murder and destruction (except Goku in the Abridged series) and actively against Cell; from his point of view, crushing the remote would spare the gal he loves, earn their trust, and get two new powerful allies against Cell.

In Krillin's defense, at the moment he crushed the remote, both Vegeta and Trunks were clearly outclassing semi-perfect Cell so much, there should never have been any chance for Cell to win, so there really wouldn't have been any need to blow up 18, had Vegeta not gone on his insane egotrip. Can you really blame him for not seeing it coming that not only would Vegeta allow Cell to do as he pleases, but actively fight his own son to let it happen?

As weird as it is, the first DBZ media I ever watched fully, like full episodes in a row, was a VHS with the episodes of Perfect Cell vs Vegeta and Trunks. I knew of DBZ beforehand and caught a few things through cultural osmosis (I remember seeing a massive Broly figure before I saw anything from Z) but those were my first episodes in full. So I never really had anxiety with Cell, and now any time I see the transformation to perfection, I just get hyped. Because my boy is coming, and we're gonna be getting to some grade A shit back to back to back.

He might not have been confident he could destroy her swiftly enough for Cell to not then swoop in while she was vulnerable from the attempt. If he blasted her and it didn't destroy her, she'd be even more of a sitting duck, so he decided it best that she flee while he holds Cell off. Problem was that she stopped to retrieve 16 instead of running away like he wanted.

Basically this whole saga happened because Toriyama and his editor kept not being satisfied with the villains The big bads for this saga were originally supposed to be Android 19 and 20 aka Dr Gero and the fat white robot. They didn't feel like they were menacing enough so they then added Androids 16, 17, and 18. But then they didn't feel like enough of a threat so Toriyama introduced Cell. But the first design, the first form you both see in the series, looked to ugly so Toriyama introduced a transformation to what you all saw as the second form. They once again weren't satisfied so they introduced Perfect Cell and were finally satisfied that they had introduced a menacing but well designed villain
