To be fair, most of duel terminal cards tend to be "lore cards" rather than actual functional cards. Thus some cards can feel disjointed from their archetype or weird as a whole. For instance, field marshall was the ally of justice meant to capture the worms to learn their weakness. Hence the effect requirement (duel terminal's worms rely mostly on flip effects) and the draw 1 effect.

At the very least they should've combined both characteristics: not just the destruction of face-down monsters, but also the destruction of Light monsters. So, your opponent's running a Light-attribute deck or you're running DNA Surgery? Nice, now you can also get a draw off face-up monsters in any position! Your opponent has a face-down Light monster? Sweet, Pot of Greed! It would still be pretty bad, but at least its existence would have meaning.

@Jesse Quarnstrom But not as well. Yugi valued all his cards, but he still changed his deck regularly to favor bigger beaters. Yusei showed that he could use cards with low levels and stats and still win by using their effects skillfully. Also it's Yugi who had easy access to new cards, in contrast to Yusei who lives in a place where owning a deck is illegal so he literally had to make his deck from cards he found discarded by others.

Its because youtube values watch time, so the longer the video and the more engaged the viewer the more money you make. So some people think "Hey make this video longer by giving anecdotes about my life could engage people!" Which if your channel does stuff like vlogs that people are interested in then congrats! You made money. If you don't it just annoys people away from your videos, in fact hiru (which is this guys main channel hirumaredx) has said before that the way he makes vids (to the point and easily bingeable) actually makes less money for him than if he followed how other youtubers made vids. But he decided this is how he wants to do vids so that's what he does.

First, you need to negate something your opponent does while you have Genex Ally Reliever in your hand (in your turn ofc), special summon it, then have someway to discard genex controller to the graveyard while having Genex recycled on the field so it can copy the name of Genex Controller, then discard Genex Ally Chemistrer to change Genex Ally Reliever attribute to Earth, 1+5 = 6 congratulation you summoned Geo Genex. It's totally not worth it, very convoluted, and there's a lot other ways to make an impressive plays with Genex but going into Geo Genex is definitely not one of them but just saying it is possible.

Which also makes YGO the only card game where the simulating softwares are significantly harder than the actual game. (If anybody got confused, automated softwares like Ygopro, DuelingNexus, etc won't allow you to miss the timing which might sound like it makes the game easier to play. But it also makes people go crazy playing all sorts of insane FTK/OTK-negate-everything combos that you will rarely see in face to face duel since they're so tedious to perform in real life)

Logically any card that select a card to apply their effect to "target" because that is what " to target something" mean in the english language. "But it does not say target in the text" is the kind of thing said by "That Guy" in your D&D circle right before he is kicked from the party for being a pedantic asshole. YGO rules in general have many effects that require you to read the fine prints.

If you're aiming a rifle, you're pointing the barrel at something you want to hit. 'Aim' and 'Target' mean the exact same thing in this context and anyone who says otherwise is talking out their ass to gain an advantage. OP is exactly right, missed timing is a stupid rule which adds nothing to the game (no, it isn't for 'balancing' either, all it does is make effects that might have been useful end up crap instead), and only serves to confuse people in practice. I've been back in the game for a few months now and I STILL trip up over the stupid wording. It's pretty obvious that, originally, there was never MEANT to be any distinction between effects that say 'IF this thing happens' vs 'WHEN this thing happens', but somebody must have used rules lawyering at a tournament to argue that their opponent's effect shouldn't be able to trigger and got the decision upheld, at which point it became an official rule. And it's stupid.

The Ally of Justice Synchros on this list fall victim to a big issue that a lot of the early Duel Terminal Archetypes had, which was that they were specifically designed to hard-counter a specific Archetype, in the case of the Allies of Justice it was Worms (Which were all Light Attribute monsters who were heavily focused on Flip effects)

Light End Dragon is from Chazz's deck in the GX manga, where it and Dark End Dragon were never Normal Summoned, thus sort of justifying why they decided to make them Synchro monsters in the real life game. The thing is, Chazz had ways of special summoning them worked into his deck, such as the Light and Darkness Dragon support card Guidance of Light and Dark (a Quick-Play Spell where you banish Light and Darkness Dragon from your Graveyard to special summon a LIGHT or DARK Dragon-Type monster from your hand). Also, its effect is a general quick effect rather than being only at attack declaration, which would be more versatile if the real card had that.

A good chunk of the archetypes that were in LotW got good enough support to be decent or linear/boring (looking at you Nordics). But Ally of justice/Venom got nothing.

Another reason that Velphito is absolutely terrible is that it's effects are directly outclassed by Ultimate Conductor Tyranno, wich is much easier to bring out. All you need is summon two random dinosaurs (preferably Oviraptor to search it out) and use them as link or syncro material for any monster you want, and then banish them. You could even argue it gets outclassed by Black Tyranno, one of the 3 old Dinosaur boss monsters that were combined into Ultimate Conductor Tyranno. This card attack directly if the opponent only has defense position monsters on the field, wich much better than randomly destroying one that is specifically face down, you can easily get tribute fodder to normal summon him in Dinosaur decks, and cheating it into the field is just as easy, all you need is a destroyed Petiteranodon during enemy turns with the quick play effects of Quetacoatlus and Ultimate Conductor Tyranno (Big Evolution Pill is also a thing, but it's better used the aformentioned two monsters).

I know Naturia Leodrake is not a great synchro, and being at level 9 just a vanilla synchro at that. But I kind of found it funny when it was being used in a turbo duel in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds and Akiza asks smugly "What's that supposed to be, a dandelion?" 2 reasons why I found that interesting: 1. Dandylion (different monster) is a real monster card in the game that Jaden used a lot often later on in GX. 2. Akiza deals with plant based monsters in her deck, and even though Leodrake is labeled as a beast synchro, it's still like she was mocking the very archetype that she specializes in.

The actual problem with Light End Dragon and Dark End Dragon is that they were never intentionally created to be Synchro. In the GX Manga they are part of Manjoume (Chazz) deck and they actually are effect monsters. They were half parts of Light and Darkness Dragon which served as Manjoume Ace monster and his spirit companion. They only suck as Synchro because it is so much harder to bring them out than it would be if they were effect monsters as originally intended

About Goyo Guardian, he became irrelevant after the nerf only because much like Neo-Spacian Mole, his unban was long overdue. He'd have likely been irrelevant even without being nerfed. For Naturia Leodrake, EARTH monsters are pretty common so that's not much of a problem, especially since it's a beast naturia monster.

In defense of Vortex, it works pretty well in dragunity based deck, as it is the only level 5 synchro monster you can summon from the extra deck, and it is useful to summon Dragunity Senatus, which is the key monster that most of the times allows you to win the game

I feel like #4 would be sideable during Synchro era against exactly Lightsworn. It could beat over Judgment Dragon under conditions that'd allow Judgment Dragon to be summoned, and then gain 200 more attack upon succeeding. Several years ago I made some decent use out of Jurrac Velphito in my jurrac deck. Because I ran gilasaurus which helped with getting Titano or meteor out as well, often I could get a 2600 attack Velphito out first turn with Gilasaurus and Gallum (and sometimes higher attack if I had a solidarity in hand). It's certainly nothing that would hold up today and it certainly wasn't even a competitive deck back then, but jurracs were never top tier regardless.

I built a Jurrac deck in Duel Links and paired it with the "Dinosaur Kingdom" skill from either Rex Raptor or Tyranno Hassleberry, which allows you to start the duel with the Jurassic World field spell (+300 ATK & DEF for all Dino-types on the field)). Although not among the best decks in the game, I still have some fun with it. Side note: I LOVE the Jurracs card art and how colorful they are!

In addition to the whole “Duel Terminal monsters were more about lore than gameplay” thing, I get the sense that Fabled Leviathan was designed less as a Fabled Synchro and more as a Dark World Synchro. Dark World Synchro decks did exist at the time, and one of the cards that enabled them was Fabled Raven. You would only need to discard three cards to Raven in order to synch it with a Goldd or Sillva, and chances are you were discarding Dark Worlds and getting value out of them. Later on, you could easily make Leviathan with Grapha + an unused Raven or a Cerburrel. Now, you wouldn’t be running a critical mass of Fableds to get back with Leviathan, but you could still make a gigantic beatstick that gets buffed by Gates, potentially gets back a Raven to enable more shenanigans, and put Grapha back in the grave to summon again with any other Dark Worlds you have on the field. You also get options for Chaos Sorcerer and BLS if you opted to go the Chaos route.

I summoned Leodrake with that Tenyi trap card in the MD Synchro event, finally a niche for the guy. I didn't even know for sure if there was a non-effect Synchro monster, I had to look it up. I'm glad there's at least one, I think all summoning types should have at least one beautiful vanilla monster. Shame about the lack of flavor text though.

The entire list can be summed up as "outdated when printed". Seriously. I love the Jurrac archetype, but I only use Velphito casually in Duel Links. The only thing else to really say is that I expected a Genex synchro on this list. Most of them weren't good. At least the Junk archetype has substitutes for their synchron and the Yusei deck as a whole has ways to cheat out the Warrior synchro monsters. I remember a story that I wrote where the protagonist just crashed Stardust Warrior to get a direct attack with Road Warrior. It was a sequel to an older story where the protagonist used Road Warrior to beat the antagonist that time. It was a really cheesy anime bookending sort of duel, but the fact that it was even an option for a deck whose main drawback was supposed to be the fact specific tuners were required just shows how hit and miss the Genex are as a whole. The only ones to touch are Genex Undine for your water decks and even then I think that we have much better engine options.

@@agr0nianTV I meant that a Genex synchro on the list was an expected inclusion like mentioning blue when listing off the colors of a rainbow. I barely see Birdman used in actual Genes decks. The archetype relied so heavily on Controller and then with the Ally cards it placed greater emphasis on manipulating attributes which is just an additional hurdle for a good effect that a lot of other archetypes don't have to deal with. Duel Terminal archetypes tend to stink overall with only a handful of good members, especially the ones from the 5ds era.

Jaculuslan and Enterblathnir aren't protected by tokens either, but with jaculuslan it protects all other mecha phantom beasts, and can even tribute unneeded tokens to get rid of cards in your opponnent's hand. and since the best way to summon it is with O-Lion, then you get a token right back in that case.

In yugioh universe, both Light and Darkness by themselves are evil. There are things like Gentle Darkness and Light of Destruction. Darkness returns as an entity in s4 and tries to take every human into his world. Light of Destruction taks over Sartorius and tries to destroy earth. Yet it seems Jaden possesses the powers of Darkness, but he seems good, so guess nothing is black or white and possesing the powers of either doesnt necessarily makes you bad or not.

Not every media uses Kingdom Hearts logic that "light is always good, darkness bad". And the Duel Terminal archetypes have this theme to make some Light monsters be evil. I would say that the best tuner you can use to bring out Goyo Guardian is probably Psychic Wheeleder. It's definitely the best in Duel Links, and even going through a lot of cards to try for a Goyo deck in YGOPro, Wheeleder ended up the best...it special summons itself, and kills stuff when you use it to synchro. All in all, Wheeleder is just a really good tuner in general, but you're probably better off bringing it out with two other level 3s for Trish, then you get to stack Wheeleder on top of Trish's devastation.

I run a beast synchro deck with closed forest and I have one copy of Naturia Leodrake in there because it's the only level 9 beast synchro. It's not really for any purpose, it's just there because I flub the math up of level modulation effects consistently enough that I just need some level 9 synchro monster to throw my level 7 tuner and my level 2 non-tuner into. Even if it's bad, at least Uniflora can resummon it if I wanted to. I also play thunder unicorn but rarely do I ever actually activate it's effects, it's mostly just a stepping stone to get to higher level synchro beasts if I have more tuners than I have non-tuners. Also it's nice to have as something to resummon off of tricorn incase I can't get bicorn into the graveyard.

Decisive Armor was good for its time even if you couldn't use its effect it was still a 3300 atk beater or wall. It was also the only completely generic level 10 synchro till Leo, the Keeper of the Sacred Tree and Ascension Sky Dragon came out roughly 4 years later and it has more attack than those 2 (most of the time). Genex also has some decent synchros.

I think field marshall was built for a different age. If I recall, back when synchro monsters at least first came out. One way a lot of decks tried to slow down defeat from a bad spot was to just place face down defense position monsters, because it was still hard to load up the field and get multiple monsters out. So Field Marshall counter acted that by letting you just draw more cards if they tried to stall out this way. At least that's how it worked with me and my friends. Perhaps we all just sucked. Which is perfectly possible (I indeed did suck).

But yes, taking Fossil Tusker as example: An optional "when" effect (when x, you *can* y) needs to be activated in response to x as the last thing that happened. If you run over a Mystic Tomato (or the Vortex synchro, somehow) by battle with Fossil Tusker, its effect will activate first since it's mandatory (when x, y happens) and then the last thing that has happened is the burn damage, not the battle destruction. Therefore, Mystic Tomato (and Vortex) will miss their timing, as they can't respond to the burn damage anymore. That's why "if" effects are so much better than "when" effects.

I think you could potentially make use of Field Marshall by using Dragulas the Vampiric Dragon, as that card can flip cards face down, but you’d have to go out of your way to keep Dragulas alive and keep recharging its xyz materials.

17:05 - XX-Saber Gottoms was the first level 9 Synchro of choice (As long as you were using earth monsters). It only required 2 creatures to bring out (As long as 1 of them was earth), could use multiple tuners for it's synchro summon (Which was relevant), had an extremely high attack power (3100) and could be tributed for hand disruption. It also came out before Mist Wurm in the TCG.

Another thing about leodrake, xx-gottoms basically uses the same materials as leodrake, except... 1) gottoms has higher attack 2) you can use multiple tuner monsters for gottoms if you really wanted to (even using ALL tuner monsters) 3) you can actually use gottoms effect if you really wanted to
