How does Enchanting work in Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition? Not much is given to use so I created a Homebrew System for Enchanting in D&D 5e. You can Enchant Weapons, Armor, and create ANY kind of Magic Item you want!

The only problem with this system is that high level Wizards, Sorcerers, Druids, Bards, and Clerics are much better at making magic items than artificers. Maybe artificers have their own special table for using spell slots to make magic items?
@TheDungeonCoach

As with all homebrews the existence of a class should not restrict a GAME WIDE SYSTEM :) If there isnt an artificer, then this isnt even a problem. BUT if there is, then yes, you would have to double or TRIPPLE what they can do for these things, for sure :)

Also if there is no artificer at your table, not using this system means that nobody can have their fun enchanting just because if there was an artificer, they would be annoyed. Even though there is no artificer xD The whole point of homebrew is to edit the game for the specific characters that the specific people at your table are playing and for the specific situations that occurred, not to improve the game for every character at every level.

@@b0xf0x13 I agree with you, the best game design accounts for any composition, and improves the experience regardless of composition. Additionally, part of the mystique of a class, and looking forward to playing them, is not having them means you lack their advantage. As an example, finding spell scrolls without a Wizard makes you go “Dang, if only I was a Wizard.” And make the appeal of one day playing as or with a Wizard greater. If the rules of the game change to give you what you are missing, it robs the class fantasy of its meaning. If you run a system that makes Artificers worse crafters than casters, but then just remove that system if and when someone plays an Artificer, it doesn’t feel like the artificer is bringing a new tool kit with them. It feels like you lose a system to earn back the class fantasy’s protected role. It’s why the Mystic class UAs were such a mess, they seriously messed with the class fantasy of skill monkeys and other casters all while having more options than a warlock. I think a robust rules system has to include how it interacts with the class whose fantasy it borrows from. In this case, the patch of triple the value of spells cast by an Artificer probably works. But glossing over it in the video certainly doesn’t.

Great work coach! Thanks for the inspiration! Here are some ideas that popped into my head while watching for anyone that wants to use the: - An item can only hold one enchantment if enchanted through calligraphy after its creation.(or X enchantments and DM decides what X is) - An item however that is enchanted at the time of its creation can hold more, or perhaps that the only way to create more powerful items. This way Calligraphy - means you can enchant any item, BUT specific technicians can do a better job on specific items. Want heavy armor? Smiths tools. Want leather armor? Leather workers tools. Magic pendant? Jeweler's. Cobbler's for shoes etc. This allows generic wizards with calligraphy to enchant almost anything with something but Artificers maintain the edge of magic item creation. Especially if we buff their spell level to gold cost to rival that of full casters.

I did also make my own rules for enchanting items that has some of the same base functions as you talk about in this video, except I used runes that had to be carved using a runic magical circle. Such circles are a chapter unto them selves as they have many many uses once you tie them into the magic of runes and a value system so that the bigger you go or more complex you go, the harder it will be and the more expensive it will become. Most such ritual to enchant something permanent also takes a hell of a lot of power, more than most can handle in one go, so the enchanter will use proper materials, diamonds work, and pour their magic into these stone each day until they have gathered enough power. Sadly this causes the diamonds to shatter into diamond dust , with a minor value if used to in a ritual again. This makes it so that the characters has to both know how to make the proper circle, they need to know the right runes and how they apply, but that's not always straight forward as you might think, as such items used can have a history that will affect the ritual by anything with a strong impact in that history. A smart mage blankets each item, but that's both hard to do and takes up time, so most chance it. Then they need to created the right enchantment and that takes skill. All such skill calls can be tested against to see how well they did. it makes magic a living part of the world. even if it's a low magic setting. Then runic circles become even more important and may be the only way too cast any magic beyond a simple light spell. I've felt that D&D is too restrictive during play since I began a few years before 2nd ed came out, That helped a bit, but the fact that your class locks you to skills is just too daft. If you as a Bard want to learn how to cook, that should be possible at a growing scale, but D&D don't work like that, but it could. It was easy to tweak openD20 do make this work, but I settle on a blend of Runequest and a few other system that had good ideas. The idea is that you can learn anything, but certain choices might bar you from learning somethings too and some information is only found by first finding the right teacher, or maybe there is just a rumor...

One thing I really like about this system is that Artificers would be so good at it, which makes a bunch of sense flavor wise. For the marking the scroll check, they can make a set of calligraphers tools with their “the right tool for the job” feature, then double their proficiency with those tools with “tool expertise”. They are also a caster with spell slots, so they can charge up the scroll with magic, and if you want to rule that their “magic item adept” feature applies to enchanting, then you could just say that their spell slots are worth twice as much gold in spell slots, making them just as useful as a full caster. Finally, they also have the ability to craft the item being enchanted in the first place using smiths tools, tinkerers tools, or one of their other sets. Introducing this system at your table would let your artificer player feel like a true magical craft master, without gating off the system from other players.

Thanks Coach for sharing your concept, it is greatly appreciated. I have a few players that wanted to build magic items. I had been running it in a much more complex manner. 1. Schematic on how to build a magic item or you can spend time researching it in your downtime and experimenting. 2. A specific soul to power the magic item, if not single use item (as all magic consumes mana and without a soul to draw in ambient mana, it doesn’t recharge and therefore single use item only, runes that don’t move are connected directly to the weave and therefore don’t need souls) The stronger the item the more powerful soul required.. I.e. you want a flame tongue you need a creature with innate fire magic or many lesser souls that can use fire magic - I.e. efreeti fits that bill. Gem stones are required to do this, this can be voluntary I.e. Angel for a holy avenger, or it can be by force, forcefully capture the soul after killing a creature through the use of home brew spells. 3. Specific materials that will hold and utilise the magic effectively. More powerful the item the more specific the requirements. 4. When you have all the materials you have to make multiple crafting and arcana checks, a failure does not destroy all your work but it does cost you to rectify, depending how much you fail. 5. You have a nice magic item as a result. For cool magic items take multiple adventures to craft and lots of effort. I think I’ll use your system for more simpler magic items, its quick and easy and I can tie the use of your own soul to power simple items through attunement. Usually I had home brewed for my world that attunement is about resonating with the captured souls.

I'm just over 5 minutes into this, and what I keep going back to is D&D 3E and 3.5E. The issue I had in those editions is that it should not cost EXP to make something. If anything, the more you make things, the more your EXP should go up, since EXP in D&D is a measurement of "time spent." The difference between adventuring and enchanting is that you gain way less EXP than you would, for example, if you went on a 3-session, 12-hour game-time dungeon crawl. The point of this post is that 3E Oriental Adventures had basically characteristics for weapons and armor, and actual Item Creation Feats. In my current update of Oriental Adventures, I've been stumped how to include enchanting things, because it was a big component of Oriental Adventures, since Jade, as a material, was commonly used in the Shadowlands of Rokugan to resist and fight the Shadowlands Taint. Talismans, for example, were a big item creation class, similar to this video's "Wondrous Item" classification. Given this, I'm going to spitball and think about how the Item Creation Feats in Oriental Adventures could be updated to actually be useful, and how they can be balanced with the magic classes and other magic-related concepts and ideas that I'm working on. While the Artificer class is a good thing, not all campaigns will include an Artificer, given that enchantments can be put on anything. This is why an Artificer should be limited to metal and metallic alloys (such as adamantine and mithryl), while Enchanters are more generalized in what they can enchant, with what materials. In a difference of skill and ability, an Enchanter will never be as good as an Artificer is with metal. However, the Enchanter will always be better than the Artificer is with non-metallic materials, such as cloth or wood. This where the Enchanter can be as powerful as an Artificer, as they are more versatile -- but at the same time, an Artificer would be more in demand, since in game terms, an adventuring party always wants better weapons and armor. Enchantments for items include such enchants as: _Honor:_ Deal Xd6 Radiant damage to a creature that has a non-lawful, non-Good alignment. _Flaming:_ Deal Xd6 Fire damage. _Keen:_ Enchanted weapon gains X in Critical Threat Range. For example, a +1 _keen longsword_ deals critical damage on an attack roll of 19 or 20, instead of just 20. Note: In all instances of X, it depends on what the magical bonus of the weapon is, such as +1 or +5. Ergo, you could have a +5 Legendary _flaming sword_ deal +5d6 Fire damage on a successful hit. The question does also come down to this, as well: Who would be better at enchanting crystals and jewels? And I think, neither, since a crystal is not a generic material, nor is it metal. However, it is also a pure material, for the most part, which makes it harder for both the Artificer and the Enchanter to work with. One term I have thought about is the term, "Crystal Singer," from a sci-fi book that uses the term to describe crystal miners. However, in this context, Crystal Singers could be how a Bard could enchant things, since a crystal being enchanted would need to have it's crystalline frequency aligned with the energy signature of the spell or effect being imbued into it. Only then could a crystal "hold" that effect or spell for multiple uses. Plus, it gives the Bard the same level of versatility as an Artificer or Enchanter. And depending on what an adventuring party needs, will depend upon how common or in-demand such skills could be taught, and how those skills would be propagated in the world. In this way, a DM could keep things balanced. But these are just my thoughts.

I have a system where characters can break down (destroy) a magic item to reverse engineer it and get a blue print. They can then use that to create another item. Each blue print created this way will have at least 1 ingredient that will require a quest. The difficulty and number of the quest(s) will depend on the power of the enchantment. This is my way of stopping players from spamming magic items. It also means I don't have to figure out gold values and allows non-casters to create items, too. When using this system, the party starts with a blue print for Potions of Healing (the 2d4+2 version). For basic things like +1/2/3 or flaming, they can instead choose to destroy the item to reconstitute the gem that was used to make that item which can then be infused into another weapon/armor. (This lets them take that bonus and apply it to their favorite weapon and/or upgrade their favorite weapon.)

Glad that you tied this to a long rest. A caster can hammer out 10 cantrips/minute, with each 1 action cantrip taking about 6 seconds for a round and 10 rounds in a minute. Personally, I recreated a Permanency spell that always requires 365 castings of the intended replicated spell at the intended level (once a day for a year), but using multiple spell slots are allowed and upcasting expedites the process as two castings. Comes with some rules about material component cost for the Permanency spell itself (4k diamonds and gold dust * target spell level) that can go up or down depending on spell duration, concentration requirement, or ritual tag. It also requires attunement if you are applying the spell (say Longstrider) on a person, the spell can be "suppressed" until a short/long rest if it requires concentration and the target fails the CON save, and each extra permanent spell doubles the material component cost. Similar with items, 3 enchants max, stuffing more in there makes it more expensive.

I have two problems with this 1. which was mentioned by Hawk Eyes Blue, this makes wizards, sorcerers, druids, bards, and clerics better magic item builders than artificer, which if you dont have artificer in your game then easy over look if you do then they are getting hard cucked. 2. this locks out 4 out of the 12 (13 with art) classes from being able to make magic items, and cucks 3 other classes so in the end you have basically 7 classes out of 12 just hard shut down for making magical items. so if you have a team that plays as those 4-7 classes its going to feel a little kicking a downed man. The recommendation that I give is allow certain creatures to drop magic cores when being looted this can be from small to large and this can be used in place for spell slots. this allows for non magic classes to still make magical weapons.

Spell slots are limited, cantrips are infinite. Cantrips take 1 action = 3 secs. It would likely be better to use 12.5 mins of cantrips for the 250g cost than using a spell slot; it will save your spell slots for surprise DM ambushes at the end of the day no matter where you are lol Oh nvm, you limited it to 2 per day -_-

Alright, Permanent Teleportation Circle. That’s been a problem for some if not most PCs. Using this system I may have found a way that you don’t have to spend an entire year in one area making one. I calculated the amount of gold needed for the material component(50gp chalk) and our version of a year (365 days) which can change depending on the calendar system of the campaign. Getting 18,250 gp for the 25% component cost and 72,000 gp for full price of the enchantment scroll. Calculated the days it would take if the lone caster used two 5th level slots a day, and got 182.5 days. Still better than spending a whole year in an area less than a days travel of the circle if you ask me. I’m now imagining a wizard having to buy a full crate of magic chalk. I guess that’s actually more common than one would think. By the way, during said long rest imbuing magic into the scroll. I’m guessing you don’t get the benefits of the long rest or don’t get the spell slot you used for the imbuing ritual?

I like the feel of making a spell or enchanted scroll by scribing a sort of binding spell or containment spell on the parchment. Then casting the spell onto the paper. Something I would do would for the weak Artificer issue is to have Artificers be able to combine two spell slots for the magical labor cost. Let's compare a 6th level Wizard to a 6th level Artificer. At 6th level, a Wizard will only be able to pump in a 3rd level spell slot to imbue on a long rest. An Artificer on the other hand can combine two 2nd level spell slots to create a 4th level spell slot. That's a whole extra two levels at 6th level if the Artificer can combine at max two spell slots. When an Artificer gets to 17th level, they can combine a 4th and 5th level spell slot to make a 9th level spell slot. At this point they're on equal footing with a 17th level wizard. Something that may also be done is to prevent the spell slot used in imbuing a scroll from come back on that long rest for any class, except for an Artificer. I can see a high level Artificer pumping in combined 4th and 5th level spell slots daily while a Wizard will need to regain their 9th level spell slot on the next long rest.

I used a very similar enchanting system for 3.5E. However, to craft a fireball scroll required enchanting it with a fireball spell. Otherwise, wizards could use fireball spell slots to create a scroll of haste, and then copy haste into their spell book from the scroll, effectively gaining access to all spells without having to adventure or even barter. Also the GP value that I assigned spell slots was based on the price guide for spell casting services from the old 3.5 DMG. I.e. 50GP raw materials + 50GP crafting labour = Masterwork item 100GP masterwork item + 100GP enchanting labour = Magic Item creation cost 200GP magic item creation cost + 200GP merchant profit = 400GP market price of magic item

The magician's hat is an awesome idea. I think it would be really cool if this could be expanded with more abilities / magic items to be something like a modern day magician. Maybe they could have another spell or ability that could pull someone out of a container. Maybe that would be able to teleport someone to them or in reverse hide them from danger or teleport them away. That could maybe even create a servant like the unseen servant in from the hat but they would be visible and be able to do more actions. There could even be juggling balls that could turn into fire bolts. My favorite scene from the Belgariad (I think it was from the sequel series) was when the party was in trouble, someone walked in disguised as a jester, juggling some balls and distracting the enemies. After walking into the room and distracting the enemies, he turned the balls into fireballs and started throwing them at the enemies, defeating them all.

Ok, so I love math and I love good homebrew, so I actively analyze other people's rulesets (I write my own systems as well 😀), and I have to say this system is an actual stroke of genius. It not only gives the players the ability to actually enchant anything they want, and provides an answer for the questions I ALWAYS run into when running games: "How do I enchant this sword?" and "How long does it take to enchant...?" This provides a solid way to enchant any item, even giving the player the ability to burn slots to do it themselves. However, it's still a system backed by solid, simple math. Frankly, this homebrew adds content for players, provides extra utility to spell slots and spellcaster NPCs, and gives the DM a solid system that can be used by any NPC as well. This is next level.

I'm not so sure about it being a scroll being the item that is generated from the material cost, mechanically what is generated as prepared material to pour the magic into doesn't really matter but from a narrative/story side of things I think I'd go for some sort of catalyst/reagent a gemstone that needs to be engraved under certain conditions or plant/animal materials that need to be gathered, something that warrants a small side adventure to get or maybe you just end up gaining through happenstance along the way to something else and someone in the party can make a check that gives them the hint that this thing can be used in an enchanting process if you go and find the right blueprint from the next town etc.

I think artificial should be treated more like Forge from X-Men evolution they don't know how it works but just know what it does and what's materials are required to make it the artificer usually have an idea of device they want to make they don't know the materials they need to make it only sense and feel the materials nearby that are right for their creation hence why you always find a artificial taking apart their own creation to figure out how it works the more complex creation more likely it will break down hence the artificial always repairing their creations and a backup system to kick in when that does happen but anyways thank you dungeon coach for the system for enchanting you created

Well I hope that there is a part in there were the artificer can make anything on the infusions list with advantage to roll and a lot less gold and in general they spend half as much for the spell they cast doubling the GP value. A regular Wizard is casting a spells twice as effective but if the artificer casting a second level spell has the effect twice that of a 4th level spell for the Wizard it could work.

I know this is a slightly older video, But I was wondering if you thought about updating this for Rune Knights. Giants have their own abilities to make magical items with runes, but the rune knight can't too anything to enchant an item. Could just to a minor adjustment to allow the rune knight's runes to enchant a scroll.

I like this, assume you can only imbue magic into this scroll once a day or it will disintegrate, that means one cantrip a day. A merchant would pay his employee 1 gold a day to imbue one cantrip worth of magic a day which would be all an average person could do maybe. Then he'd at least double the cost of it and have limited supply because he only has so many employees and family members expending that magic or their life force. Second to that it takes 48 hours minimum to recover th use of the cantrip/spell slot gm discretion
@mcfluffier
@mcfluffier 3 жыл бұрын
It would be a interesting twist IMO that based the enchant you would have to roll multiple DC10 or greater. And based on the failures the DM could add in quirks or shortcomings. Like you want to make a +3 Sword ? You need to roll 6 DC 10 and let’s say you fail 4 of them. Then the +3 swords quirk could be something like if you kill a creature with this sword it actually comes back to life at half health.
@makuron5743
@makuron5743 Жыл бұрын
If you think about it, one hour of cantrips would reduce the cost by 600 since a cantrip can take at most 6 seconds to cast. That's just creative thinking tho but basically, even tho it'd probably tire the caster out by casting so many cantrips non stop it's still cheaper to just cast 600 cantrips in like 3 hours while traveling you can just do it no probs. So a 1 slot a day thing, use the caster's scores or something(Like constitution) to limit the uses per day even tho it'd be too obvious it's just made for balance, a exhaustion points to repeated use like that, adding the need of an enchanting station, concentration etc. So yeah, if your player thinks about it for even a second the entire thing falls over unless you decide to limit them and making it be 2 times per long rest arbitrarily just doesn't feel more than a balance limit.

I'd definitely let Artificers and Wizards get some bonus for this. Like they can craft items or scrolls a little bit cheaper. Maybe proficiency bonus × 10, that would be the "discount" they get off the magic that has to be poored into it. I think Artificers definitely need that since making magic items is their thing
@vn0688

I took the monster hunter approach with my campaign before I saw this... I'd say wizards would have the bonuses apply to the calligraphy portion of the process (being accustomed to spell book inscriptions and whatnot) while artificers would get the bonuses to the imbuing portion of the process (being more hands on with their magical tinkering) I imagine it being like building a car... An engineer is going to be more trained with the physics and math, but a technician is going to have more hands on experience with the various parts during assembly or repair.
@vn0688
@vn0688 3 жыл бұрын
Building on this, Id apply these bonuses either with advantage, or if there's overlap/multiclassing issues that could pop up, give the relevant characters a flat bonus based on their levels in wizard/artificer that applies to the relevant portions of the process.

@elmsigreen 3 жыл бұрын
@@vn0688 Also Wizards will get more and higher level spell slots than Artificers so giving Artificers some discount off of the imbuing process seems really smart and fair. I really want to try this with potions. I love giving my players homebrewed potions because even if they are OP it's ok because it's most likely only going to effect one session or just one combat. Usually just making it hilarious.

Then, you expend mana and expensive inks, in the enchanting process. ... Finally, you claim your now enchanted item, to do whatever with.

So, how I did it was before you could even think of enchanting you needed arcana proficiency, and the spell casting feature meaning martials like fighters and barbarians cannot create magic items. Additionally, you needed a significant amount of time and money to create the magic item along with the item itself. Lastly, you need a diagram kind of like an arcane recipe for the enchantment which can be bought from merchants, taken from existing magic items, or created yourself at the cost of more time and money. Additionally, you may want to have your players go searching for specific magical materials such as the tongue of an adult red dragon for a flame tongue sword you may also require them to find multiple magical materials to be used in their creation. Artificers can also spend half the money or half the time when creating magic items, and artificers never require a diagram giving them additional utility.
@YourBoyNobody530
@YourBoyNobody530 2 жыл бұрын
For example if you wanted to create a +1 long sword first you'd need a long sword your willing to not use for a while then you'd need a diagram. The diagram might cost 200 gold if bought in a store, and about a week of time plus 100 gold to make it yourself. Then you'd need lets say since its an uncommon tier magic item it'll take you about two weeks of time, and 1000 gold to create.

I think this system has good ideas but as is it seems a really rigid as it has a very particular flavour. I think a druid making a magic item should feel way different from a wizard or artificer making one. So I am not a fan of the scroll thing if it is mandatory. The mechanics of cost and so on seem really well worked out though. I'd suggest keeping these mechanics but opening it up flavour-wise! Perhaps it does not have to be a scroll but can be a gem or any other item appropriate to the style of magic. So a dwarven cleric might work on a gem, a druid can cultivate a magic plant etc with the same mechanics as the Wizard does this with Scrolls.

I'm a bit late to the party, but one question. I really love the way of dividing item value into 3 parts, it's easy, intuitive, and makes sense. BUT, I'm assuming with enchanting we're taking into account the final value of the item here, for example a 4000gp magical sword. Where would the mundane sword value go? Would it be tied to ingredients of the whole item? Or is this system covering just the value of the enchantment itself, so the 4000gp would be tha value of the enchantment scroll, and you need a sword on top of that? Asking because I feel like making it a requirement for more powerful enchantments to have a more valuable core item. So that characters can't just make a Rusty Axe of Mass Disintegration, as the item would be to fragile to hold an enchantment of such magnitude.

LOVE this question, I shoudl have addressed it in the video Lets say the TOTAL cost is 800g 25% = ingridients so thats 200g So I would pay someone 50% of THAT to do the calligraphy check if they dont do it themselves You could even rule THAT is the reason that you loose 50% of the cost for ingridients, because 100g = ingridients and 100g = the calligraphy check

@MrTogNeve
@MrTogNeve Жыл бұрын
So I like the direction...but not the steps. What I don't like is that you start off with the cost and then break it down from there....when you get to the 25% that is the magic going into the scroll, what magic is going into it? Am I casting the same spell over and over and over again to "charge" it up? Typical process would be to cast the spells that are the part of the affect of the magic item....wand of fireballs has fireball cast upon it. ETC. Also the 25% of the magic going into scroll...does that account for the material components of the spells that you have to cast? Things like the identify spell require a 100GP Pearl...that could add up. 1) Get a pattern or create a pattern - Any spell caster can think of the ideas "magic missile plus fireball equal big magic missile" But it takes a roll to see if the caster puts together a working schematic. This could be the special skill of the Artificer or Artificer Initiate feat in that they get a bonus to that schematic check. 2) Imbue the scroll - skip that calligraphy bit as a separate portion, make the spell caster(s) be the one to write the spell on the scroll. This is where the magic gets imparted upon the scroll itself. This part is the calligraphy and the spell casting. You could create checks for different aspects such as charges, merging effects, and pretty much anything that may not have a direct spell linked to it. Every spell to be cast as a ritual so it takes time. Every spell must be written, so your calligraphy check. This could also be a differentiator on the Artificer, they do not need the scroll, they can work directly with the item. 3) Transfer the scroll to the item. Another ritual for non-artificers. And an arcana check...failed arcana is a failed cast and the item is rendered magically inert and must be replaced. A critical failure and the scroll is also consumed. A success is just what you want. A critical success and some rogue sentience is also brought into the item...thus making an artifact level item. You then base your costs off of the work that goes into the item, not figuring the cost out first and going backwards, that is not how widgets are made...you have figure your costs before you can figure what you are going to charge.

This is an overly complicated system to a simple process of putting a enchantment on an item. Step one you either know a spell (effect/s) to place into an item or a scroll or hire a PC/NPC who does. Two, either build or get a non mundane item , a "Master Work" or greater than standard quality item. Get any (if any) material component (I still don't get to concept of magic needing physical stuff to make it work. If you need components specially material ones it's alchemy at best not magic. Visual [hand waving] Somatic [magi words or incantations said] make sense as it tech draws energies from you the caster or an unnatural source to make the effect/s come to happen. Monk's Ki is very good version of this. Clerics get it from their faith, Rangers/Druids get from nature, Bards from their music/artistic talents). Step three, take the time to place spell (effect/s) to said item. "Back in my day" just put an spell(effect) on an item and cast Permanency on it to make the spell(effect) never ware off. Xanathar's Guide has a the basics for this, though what really should have been done is update the magic item creation rules from Pathfinder. I was really looking forward to seeing this to.
