Except for sailing in my youth on the lakes of Mass and NH I don’t know much about boat construction but I do build cars and consider myself very mechanically inclined and I am very impressed not only with 6our work the 5he very design of this craft I hope to see the completed project some day in the not too distant future. To my eye I prefer the aesthetic of the deadlights parallel to the sheerline vs the waterline. I think you made the right call! It looks great and look forward to seeing how you finish up the project. Keep up the good work!

Parallel with the shear looks better to me, at least from outside. The deadlights further aft will be naturally lower following the shear and easier to see out of. Maybe less important up forward.

Parallel to the waterline, as the boat is already far from original so I think the period of the original build is already vastly compromised. Just my thoughts. Oh BTW why ask for feedback when the decision is made and work is complete.

Kevlar was first added to Fiber Glass boat to make them litter with that material which is lighter and stronger many layers of Fiber Glass mat, roven woven when used to build boats. The use of bullet resist vests came after years it use back in the 1970s for boat building to decrease the weight

I think the deadlights have absolutely transformed the looks of the boat. From the outside they’ve taken ten years off her age and from the inside they’ve lightened the whole feel of it aesthetically. Less cave, more open plan if you get my meaning? All in all an excellent design decision, I like it a lot. Not that my opinion should matter really, she’s your toy and you should do whatever is going to make your souls happy! Lovely job, Cheers, R.😎👍🍻 PS, Kevlar is an Aramid fibre, good for strength, absence of brittleness and excellent for impact and abrasion resistance. One note, it can be a bit prone to wicking water on exposed material and it REALLY doesn’t appreciate extended exposure to UV, nor does that foam so it’s worth at least bunging a run of painters tape over the cut edges until you frame it in.

5 minutes in, I was begging for Parallel to the Waterline. By the end, I was convinced you made the right decision. More modern boats seem to place the lights lower down the hull. With yours near the top (your boat is not relatively tall) it looks much better from the outside with them parallel to the shear. And clearly, the inspector approves ;)

I think that what it looks like from the outside is more important even though the owner will see more of the inside than the outside. I don't think there is any problem with being reminded one is in a boat and not a condo ;) The "newer" boats look wrong, matching the sheer is just, "right" (or correct). Matching the waterline looks wrong.
