The movements are more jazzy now. The 90's appeared as if they danced from the hips and waists up, more upper body then lower body movements. Movements today are deeper with the jazz plie squats. They basically used their entire bodies, and that makes the movements bigger, deeper, stronger, and better.

For Black people who don’t know SWAC dance differentials. “Jsette” is the adverb and “Dancing Dolls” is the adjective that is most commonly use when describing Black majorettes.

Looking at the old school videos the Jsettes and Dolls used to dance pretty similar in the stands back in the day. Dr. Afrachanna (J-Sette) and Traci Prince (Doll) were really the trailblazers for separating their styles to what they are today.

The J-Setting style was primarily created by Shirley Middleton, a woman who was a former majorette with Jackson State University’s marching band. In 1971, she led the formation of the Prancing Jaycettes (now known as the Prancing J-Settes) after meeting with the university president to request that they be allowed to transition from traditional majorette routines to more contemporary dance styles. Middleton established technical performance standards and choreographed routines that incorporated high-energy movements and signature steps, which became foundational to J-Setting. @@terrancethornton8539

@@terrancethornton8539While Hollis Pippins, an openly gay male former JSU student, also played a significant role in developing choreography and creative direction for the danceline prior to 1975, it was Middleton’s vision and leadership that laid the groundwork for what would become known as J-Setting.

Afrachanna’s era cleaned up and modernized a lot of those old school counts for that time during 1998-2000. I also notice that her reign brought in a lot of slow/mid tempo counts to the book. The J-Settes didn’t really throw counts to slow songs during early-mid 90’s. Of course we all know she is the mother of C bucking. That’s what the Settes are mostly known for in the stands.
