The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

.Saw her in concert on her final tour in Chicago. It was in the Auditorium Theatre and she filled that huge space with her voice. In the director's box were three other singers: Birgit Nilsson, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Dietrich Fischer Dieskau. They were all in Chicago for performances of their own but took the time to hear Farrell. Only a truly great singer could achieve that type of respect from her colleagues.

A magnificent voice yet also tender and expressive when it needed to be. Eileen Farrell was the definitive soprano dramatica.

Nobody can touch Eileen in "Un Bel Di". Not only is it sung beautifully, but every word is sung appropriate to the lyric.

Does it get any better? Wow, many thanks for this upload. I wish more singers would listen to this lady sing. Something to be learned from doing so. Something great.

She is a rarity. No "head voice" as such. She sings the super high notes from her chest. Few, if any, can do so.

All the while, she was a New York housewife and mother, married to an NY cop, living in a regular house, doing her own shopping and errands. The total non-diva, but with talent oozing out of her.

The backyard of her home on Staten Island was side by side with my grammar school's playground. She kept a low profile, but after about 5 years I finally spotted her out there doing her garden. Lucky me! lol

How did the Sullivan find a way to pay for all these orchestra players for posting this for free after all these years. What a great show that we dont dare repeat for fear of monetary failure...pretty sad!
