I agree! The ´69 and ´71 Ed Sullivan Show was great, the sound engineers on those two shows deserve an Oscar if you ask me. Chatting a little about the Brothers, in contrary to you I´m particularly drawn towards Phil, everyon has his prefernces ;) He fits me better voice and hair wise... Gotta confess, I wear my hair like he did since 2017... a little childish, but I´m not that old yet ;) Unfortunately it´s very hard to find a good, stable lead voice where you can add some harmony in his style. Most people can´t hold their notes as soon as there is a second guy who sings something different. And most people my age have no clue who the Everly Brothers are, quite diasppointing actually.

@@v-g-z3689 You’re absolutely right - no reason why you shouldn’t prefer Phil, whilst I prefer Don. And you make a great point, that the sublime Everly sound needs BOTH voices - Don’s fabulous, sexy, baritone lead that provides a stable melody line for Phil’s gorgeous, soaring tenor harmony. I love it that you wear your hair like Phil’s! Didn’t they both have the most wonderful hair!

@@judeward5341 My words! It´s the combination of both voices that make it the sound great, and they chose their roles wisely, Phil wouldn´t work as lead voice that well, nor would I. Oh yes they did! But it`s quite hard to find a hairdresser who is capable of doing such a style... nowerdays there aren't many men anymore who use a hairdryer, brush and hairspray in the morning, although it was common til the 1980´s. By the way, I always thought that no one on earth had the exact same hairstyle as Phil did... until i recently found a german Colgate toothpaste commercial from the 1980s where the guy in it wears his hair IDENTICAL to Phil. That was quite a surprise!

The Everly’s are the only “original” generation of Rock that I was ever fortunate to see live. I got into early Rock, not Disco in 1978, by seeing “American Graffiti”, “American Hot Wax”, and “the Buddy Holly Story” with my Parents - and “yelllow submarine” and “Easy Rider”. 🎸😎 In 2003, when Simon & Garfunkel had their first reunion tour, in years, they had the Everly Brothers along, to do a set, and sing with.

about a year or two after this performance Warren Zevon would become their keyboardist and band leader, bringing in Waddy Wachtel on electric guitar

This was recorded in '69. Warren came on board shortly before the breakup in '73, and Waddy was with the band prior to that. I had been in and out of their band three times since '64, had re-joined them, and was onstage when they broke up. The other musicians here are Terry Slater on bass and Jack Sargent on drums.

What I find interesting about these old videos of live performances is that the singers never had to literally eat the microphone and still (as in the case of these two) sound loads better than just about anyone nowadays.

Timeless! I can imagine this performance turning different generations tuning in that night. The kids think it's corny, but if they have an ear for music they hear the end of Walk This Way and say, "wow". Then there's the kids' mom and dad, reminiscing about their young and dating days in the 50s during Wake Up and Bye Bye, smiling at the memories. And then there's grandma and grandpa, connecting with the contemporary-sounding Bowling Green with that now sound!

From everything I have read on the Everlys at this point in 1969, Don was BEGGING Phil to do something progressive and not stay rigidly in the past. This is the reason Don was making mildly snarky comments leading into "Wake Up Little Susie" and "Bye Bye Love." Phil refused to update the Everly sound or at least TRY something NEW occasionally. Finally, Don couldn't stand being an "Oldies" act, so he would eventually pull the plug in the middle of a set. The brothers wouldn't reunite professionally until the 80s.

@@Playbyplaymedia Yes he did. As one example, his very first solo album, Brother Jukebox was released to critical acclaim - it’s very different from the usual Everly Brothers sound. But before that, he also managed to persuade Phil eventually to release some new material. The Roots album was driven by Don and is hailed as a masterpiece. Don was also acknowledged - by musicians like Waddy Wachtel (lead guitarist with Stevie Nicks on her solo tours) and Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards - to be the “best lead singer in rock and roll” and “one of the best rhythm guitarists ever”. Don was hugely innovative, creating guitar licks and riffs, and ways of tuning a guitar with a’Dropped G’, that are copied today…he won a massive ‘Best Guitar Riff’ award for his intro to ‘Bye Bye Love’. Phil had a lovely tenor harmony voice, but Don’s gorgeous deep baritone lead was brilliant, and of the two, Don was the most creative by far.

Interesting to read! I always thought that Don´s sarcastic comments he regularly made in the late 60´s/early 70´s, like the one before Wake up little Susie, was aimed at the people who considered the Everly Brothers an oldies act just because they were "from the 50´s". Although I personally find it quite obvoius that Phil is the stable part of the Everly Brothers, the traditional, classical one and Don the opposite, I didn´t know it was that plain and Don had to persuade Phil to mondernize their sound. I knew they had their differences that often took the shape of war, but I never thought that innovation and a more modern sound was a thing within that.

@@v-g-z3689 Was Phil the more stable? I’m not sure if that’s the best way to describe their relationship. Phil was always described as more outgoing. He was certainly the more conservative and traditional, whereas Don was quieter, more reflective… creative, innovative and the more skilled guitarist. Don was for sure acknowledged by everyone, including Phil, as their musical leader - Phil has said he relied on Don as his elder brother to make decisions, and to forge the way ahead. Although Phil certainly had his say in arguments and debates. It’s interesting that this leadership quality in Don showed elsewhere…. when they joined the Marine Reserves, Phil said Don was made Platoon Leader, whereas he Phil just did grunt work! When they were kids, it was almost inevitable that Don, being the elder, was seen as more of a rebel, whilst Phil says he watched Don’s confrontations with their parents and was “the more sly”, to avoid trouble! They both had multiple marriages, and in the 1970s and ‘80s, Phil became a total family man, whereas after his 2nd marriage failed in 1970/71, Don adopted more of what he describes as ‘a rock n roll lifestyle’ until he eventually met his wife Adela. In that respect, it’s probably fair to say Phil was the more stable at that time.

And yes, I didn´t mean "stable" in the context of their relationship, much more looking at the lifestyle, way of behaving and "position within oneself in life" if that is even a thing. Reading what you wrote above confirms the picture I already had of Don and Phil pretty accurately. Thinking about the original comment above now, I find it even more surprising that Don had to beg Phil to modernize their sound in the late 60´s because he was the obvoius leader of the Brothers and why that - although Phil had his say in arguments - didn´t happen automatically.

Don and Phil sporting better Beatle haircuts than The Beatles themselves! Superb duo. Too bad the 60s turned out to be a frustrating decade for the boys. It got off to a perfect start with Cathys Clown topping the charts in 1960 and although they had a couple of hits after that, it took until 1967 until they got back into the Top 40 with the marvellous Bowling Green, a song that turned out to be their last big hit. Albums such as Two Yanks In England and Roots are masterpieces. Even their 1967 Popsike album Sing is rather good.

They had a terrible contract that they could not get out of. It destroyed their carreer and probably hurt their relationship with each other. Sad, I wonder what wonderful hit songs we lost from this.
