I’d also like to add that we want health brought back into this. We began research in drowning, which includes (by definition) “inhalation of water”. I refuse to let KZbin’s poor content AI take this from us. This was never a “hold breath” contest, but a drowning one. Even if the changed titles try to gaslight us. Using the median potential health of a character (as with Ocarina of time Link) is the true, pure, and bureaucratic way. We witnessed a child lie about their age to enter the drowning contest. We have come too far to go back now.

I like this. I'm OK with the health meter being part of the competition. If I had one criticism for Wind Waker, it'd be Link's swimming stamina. A kid raised on an island would be a better swimmer.

Actually in morrowind argonians dont breath underwater naturally, they just start with a spell of water breathing which is an illegal performance enhancing effect

Games where you can't go under water should have a separate metric in which measure time spent before drowning from beginning to swim to death. But keep it all in one giant spread sheet, one huge table with a little foot note. And also two smaller tables for each category.

I think it's fine to count swimmers, it's more realistic to be swimming on the top and drown from stamina loss than to be swimming inert underwater, hold ones breath for an insane amount of time despite pressure, and eventually succumb to the elements without ever breaking the surface again.

I remember when I just made Sonic chill out at the bottom of pool in Sonic Adventure DX for almost a minute and got startled by that intense drowning music suddenly start playing loudly. The other Sonic games had more clearer clues that you could drown underwater so I though that feature got scrapped in that game. I was also paranoid to touch anything at the hub since I kept randomly falling through the floor and die, especially when talking to NPCs which I thought was a feature to punish me for doing something I didn't understand since I couldn't read English back then.

It's always fun to see you find workarounds! Edit: if you're still looking for more guys to drown: fallout, the sims, ark survival evolved(may be cheating as you can upgrade your oxygen in that one), the witcher. Also in rdr2, I'm pretty sure john and arthur have different drowning times!

I'd like to nominate the main character from Subnautica. There are different numbers depending on if you are using an air tank, an upgraded air tank, and/or a rebreather, as the rebreather extends time at high depths. Since upgrades are usually not allowed, I'd go with the just out of the life pod time

I think Edward Kenway from AC: Black Flag should be in the next competition. While most AC characters can dive but automatically resurface, black flag has the bell diving minigame and I'm pretty sure Edward drowns from that. Also I think you forgot to mark down V from cyberpunk who had a breath bar but still lost health.

Note how Wind Waker Link doesn't actually die, exactly. He just voids out, which admittedly happens in situations where a real-life person would have died, but it only loses you half a heart instead of game over'ing you.

In barotrauma, a game about being underwater, you can go without air for 25 seconds before falling unconscious, and then after about 45 more seconds you die. Which is pitiful.

I'm pretty sure if you manage to get yourself wedged under something so Link can't surface in Wind Waker (like the boat after diving in from a height), he still uses the same breath meter for that fully submerged period anyway. That's just the humble expert opinion of this particular peanut but it seems fair for most breath-holding comparisons.

Oh hell no bro, Sonic Adventure is god tier. You seem like the EXACT person to love what it offers too. That surreal, odd and inexplicable feeling so many of the levels, music and skybox give you. I recently lodged TOTK Link under a piece of wood while he was swimming and I can confidently say, that boi doesn't need to breath! He only "drowns", if he has no Stamina left and that seems to be just him sinking to the bottom and having to climb out, considering he doesn't die just loses some health and starts back from where he entered the water initially. Would be interested how you would qualify that. Infinte breath holding?
